But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and, hopefully, we shall overcome” - Rosa Parks In the story, To Kill a Mockingbird, racism was presented when Tom Robinson was found guilty of raping Mayella Ewell, also when Calpernia was known as the black maid of The Finch’s. Harper Lee, shows that racism was a problem back then, and racism still exists in our world today.
Racism was shown throughout the book through the Tom Robinson trial. He was conviced of raping a white girl on a train when he really didn’t. Her father had told her to tell the jury that she was raped a black guy because her father was really the one abusing her and he needed a cover up. The other people in the town just thought of her as anoother negro. So she took the Finch kids to church to show them what it was like to go to an all black church. Some of the black people were nice to them so that showed them that all black people aren’t as bad as people make them sound or seem.
In chapter 11, Jem and Scout walk past Mrs.Dubose’s when she starts saying racist comments about Atticus. Mrs Dubose telling Jem, “Your father is not better than the niggers and trash he works for!” This shows that the people in town didn’t approve of Atticus taking Tom Robinson’s case. They also didn’t agree with him being okay with black people and him not being the racist. Mr. Dolphas Raymond marrying a black woman. He told Jem and Dill that he carried around a paper bag with coca-cola in it to make people believe that he was a drunk. It was illegal to carry around alcohol with out a paper bag around it. If they thought that he was a drunk then he would have an excuse to why he married a black woman. This shows that the white people were ashamed of the black
