Jocelyn Powell Professor Cay Strickland ENG 252-W01 09 December 2017 Photojournalism & The Rising of America While researching sources pertaining to photojournalism, I came across many authors who published literary works regarding photojournalism; particularly novels, scholarly journals, newspapers, and articles. These authors often concluded that photojournalism changed how many Americans viewed society. Photojournalism originated during 1853 when a photojournalist by the name of Carol Szathmari documented the Crimean War. Photojournalism pushed for social change by showing problems associated within the society. Many people attitude regarding society began to change through the widespread broadcast of journalism. Photojournalism influenced all aspects of society such as art, music, science, and politics. It created a new way for people to communicate during the Civil War. When Jacob Riis documented the slums of New York he showed exactly how important increasing populations in America were. He showed every aspect of the living conditions of these people. Photojournalism is very distinct and unique. It has continued to serve as a huge impact in American society. Photography and photojournalism may sound alike but they are not the same thing.
