Inspiring Career of Petroleum Engineering
HISTORY
Petroleum engineering is one of the most important leading careers of society. This is a field of engineering which relates to parts of chemistry, hydrocarbons that can be crude/oil of natural gas. Petroleum engineering has many difficult stages. As you read more many other facts on why petroleum engineering is important will be stated.
Petroleum engineering is the development and exploitation of crude/oil and natural gas. The foundation was established during the 1890s in California. This career was developed to correlate oil- producing zones and water zones from well to prevent large amounts of water from entering oil- produced zones.
The word relies on oil and gas for energy. Gas and oil have to be located and extracted. Petroleum engineering makes it possible; they are responsible for getting oil and gas fields running. They have a promising future as long as gas and oil are main resources for energy needs.
Petroleum engineers work with other scientists, geologist, chemists and other engineers, to determine how to have oil and gas fields run smooth and safely as possible. They also design equipment used for drilling operations. Their main goal is to establish a system that would produce more oil and gas out of deposits.
Requirements
A petroleum engineer must obtain a bachelor’s degree in engineering. Some engineering programs offer field work while in school to get the student equated with the type of work in the petroleum engineering field. They are required to license to work in the public with others are under another petroleum engineer. Licensing requires an individual to have a degree from an ABET- accredited progr...

...ions. Oil and gas extraction is the largest industry so that makes it easier to for a petroleum engineer to find employment. Oil and gas companies will begin to drill in deeper water and in less open places due to high prices. This while result in more engineers to work on each drilling site at a time. Many petroleum engineers will be needed to meet regulations for drilling in deep water. Petroleum engineering is one of the highest paying occupations in the economy. Experienced petroleum engineers also may start their own companies and provide services to larger oil and gas companies (‘Petroleum Engineers: Occupational Outlook Handbook: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.”U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. N.P., n.d. Web Retrieved on 22 May 2014).
Petroleum engineering is a very challenging field to work in. it would all pay off in the end. The pay is very excellent
While studying the industry as well as the Chevron Corporation, I have been able to found a gap between consumption and production capacity which is expected to widen more from now with the demand side for energy exceeding the supply side of them same. Reserves has started to yield lesser outputs, as per the statistics of HIS energy, which claim such case to be applicable nearly 90% of all known energy reserves. In addition to that, the discoveries of new oil fields have slowed down, and studies have revealed that a new groundbreaking discovery of any oil reserve is yet to be made since 2002. These studies can easily provides enough evidence to conclude that the production patterns will only continue to diminish in futures, if dependency is on the existing ones, unless some new discoveries are made, many of the related projects being still in the pipeline, with no reliable or expected date of production start. This usually restricts companies in such industries to organically grow, leaving them with the only financial growth option to merge, horizontally or vertically, with another in the same or related industry.
Almost every single nation in our world today, the United States included, is extremely reliant on oil and how much of it we can obtain. Wars have started between countries vying for control of this valuable natural resource. The United States as a whole has been trying to reduce its reliance on foreign oil and has had some success, especially with the discovery of the Bakken formation and projects like the Keystone Pipeline. Projects like the Keystone Pipeline are important as they will allow us to transport more oil than we would be able to in train cars, and grant larger access to oil reserves in the United States and Canada. The Keystone Pipeline itself is an oil pipeline which runs from the western Canadian sedimentary basin in Alberta, Canada to refineries in the United States.
Oil provided new fuel for transportation and manufacturing, even railroads were able to convert to oil. Oil helped manufacturing plants and farms move to a cheaper source of energy. Another significant factor of oil is that it helped encourage automobile production as well as roads. The production of the Interstate highway led to the movement of people and goods (Champagne, Harpham 13). Rapid industrialization of the Gulf Coast region sparked. By 1929 in Harris County, 27 percent of all manufacturing employees worked in refineries. By 1940 the capacity of the refineries had increased fourfold. The oil and gas industries carried a boom-and-bust mentality (Oliena 1). The economy flourish at times and failed other times, because the prices would rise and fall. When new oil was discovered in a particular place it brought about more people, overcrowding the schools and new housing. Yet a couple years later the town could experience a bust creating poverty and making the town a ghost town. The oil and gas industry transformed the government and its role with the economy. The Texas Railroad Commission was extended to regulate energy and to promote well-spacing rules. Higher education benefitted through the oil and gas industry ( Munch, Francis, and Rundell 604). In 1923 oil was discovered in the West Texas Permian Basin on university land. The Permanent University Fund was split up between the
Two properties are required for fluid movement of Reservoir rocks and Source rocks: permeability and porosity. It consist voids or pores, ability to contain fluid (known as porosity) and the pores are interconnected (permeability) in order to allow flow to occur. Hydrocarbons can be termed as reservoir fluid. The volume of hydrocarbons stored in a reservoir depends upon the porosity of the reservoir rock. The rate and volume at which hydrocarbons are withdrawn depends upon the permeability of the reservoir rock. Almost complete pore space of the superior several kilometres of earth’s crust contains water. Therefore in this water environment hydrocarbons exist with amalgamation of oil, gas and water occurring in different proportions.
Drilling for oil has many benefits, but it can also cause many problems. There is no clear answer to the question on offshore drilling, because both sides have strong arguments. Because we are so dependent on oil, we need to get it from somewhere, and economically speaking, offshore drilling makes more sense. However, we also need to take the environment into consideration. This is why I strongly believe should utilize the precautionary principle and analyze the possible consequences on the environment before starting any new drilling sites. What also needs to happen is for people to become less dependent on oil, by developing alternative fuel sources and using more sustainable transportation methods.
What is Hydraulic Fracturing or as some refer to as Fracking? Hydraulic Fracturing or Fracking is a method of mining. The process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at high pressure in order to crack shale rocks and release trapped natural gas from the ground. Fracking was first used in 1947, at the Hugoton field in southwestern Kansas. Stanolind Oil (AMOCO) was the company that conducted the experimental fracking method. Floyd Farris, who works for AMOCO, is the person who preformed studies of the pressure of injecting water and certain chemicals into oil and gas wells; the process of fracking was introduced. Fracking can produce a lot of energy, but it also has the potential to harm the environment. One question that is asked is “Will Fracking affect our water that we drink and change our lifestyle?” America could become independent on energy if there is more fracking. Independence on gas and oil would help all of our country.
Throughout the past three decades, energy has been a perennial issue in United States politics, economics, and media. The main concern surrounding this topic is the idea of energy independence and how the United States should proceed into the future. Energy independence relates to the goal of reducing United States dependence on importing foreign oil and other foreign energy sources. This desire aims to maintain energy dependence domestically so the United States can avoid reliance on any unstable countries and be detached from global energy supply distribution. It is currently being speculated that the United States might not be too far off from this goal. America’s dependence on foreign oil has gone down every single year since 2007. In 2010, the U.S. imported less than 50 percent of the oil the country consumed -- the first time that’s happened in 13 years -- and the trend continued in 2011 (Zhang.) Experts credit new technology as the reason the United States is within several years of again becoming the biggest oil producer in the world, and perhaps two decades away from full energy independence. Hydraulic fracturing, fracking, is the “lead” technology in this technological revolution. Fracking is an economically more feasible way of drilling for oil or gas in harder to reach geological formation. Within the past decade or so, combining hydraulic fracturing with horizontal drilling has opened up shale deposits across the country. It has brought large-scale natural gas drilling to new regions that may not have had accessible deposits in the past. These areas have greatly benefited from the addition of this industry to their local economies. Certain are...
First up, of course, has to be the big one. Out of 254 counties in the state, 232 produce some quantity of oil. How did the petroleum industry get started in Texas? People actually knew about petroleum deposits in Texas long before they could figure out a good use for the stuff. Indians knew of seeps in the ground where petroleum oozed up long before Europeans found their way to the Americas. Those Europeans didn't know what to do with it either at first. Hernando de Soto's crew used the stuff to caulk their boats to make them watertight. The first Texas oil well was drilled in Nacogdoches County in 1866, and other small wells followed. The first major oil well in Texas was drilled in Corsicana in 1894, and the BIG one, Spindletop, blew out in grand style on January 10, 1901. But the demand for the oil took a while to catch up to production. After Spindletop, the country started seriously moving towards a petroleum-based economy.
Petroleum seepages, in some form or another have been around since ancient times for boat caulking, road mending, and as medicine, however, the modern petroleum industry was truly born with the first drilled oil well in August 1859 by Edwin L. Drake at Titusville, PA. (Laudon, 347) At first, in the United States, oil production was controlled by small operators but by the late 1870's John D. Rockfeller had purchased most of the nation's refineries-controlling the United States industry. The Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1911 split Rockfeller's Standard Oil Trust into three smaller companies; today they are known as Mobil, Chevron, and Exxon. (Lynch, 214) Since that time, oil has become a major part of everyone's way of life. Oil is used to provide fuel for automobiles, tractors, trucks, aircraft and ships. Petroleum products are the basic materials used for the manufacture of synthetic fibers for clothing and in plastics, paints, fertilizers, insecticides, soaps, and synthetic rubber etc... (Lynch, 207) Due to this demand, companies are constantly searching for more oil deposits.

Furthermore met more than 60% of worldwide vitality request by the oil and gas industry. Advancement undertakings and foundation as far and wide as possible, depend on the business. The oil and gas industry is a basic industry globally. The business might be isolated into five parts:
There are eleven basic types of engineering each with their own subcategories that the careers specialize in. The one that interests me the most, mechanical engineering, utilizes multiple categories of engineering but mostly focuses on moving parts. Because mechanical engineering uses more concepts of the other sub-categories of engineering than any other, it is a very flexible career that no employers can go without (Constant). This article is all about engineering and gives a decent overview of most of its branches and fundamentals.
The oil & gas industry is among the largest industries in the world. The sector generates large revenues and employs a large number of people in order to meet the worldwide demand for energy.
Engineers are valuable assets to any company because they think analytically. Engineers may advance to become technical specialists or to supervise a staff or team of engineers and technicians. Some eventually become engineering managers or enter other managerial or sales jobs.
Engineering is a very important occupation in our society. Many things (phones, computers, buildings, desks, chairs, toys etc.) that we have today had to be designed and innovated, and that's what engineers do, design and innovate. Electrical Engineers design electronic equipment, devices, or objects, like; “computers, robots, cell phones, cards, radars, navigation systems, wiring and lighting in buildings, and much, much more! They do many different things and design a lot of things. Some other (more specific) things they do include, “circuits such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, transistors and diodes,micro-fabrication of tiny electronic circuit components, signals, such as analog or digital signals, electricity
