Essay On Overclocking

958 Words2 Pages

Summary
The reason enthusiasts overclock their hardware is to increase the performance of their computers. The trade-offs when overclocking are an increase in power consumption and fan noise because of the increased voltage which leads to hotter operating temperatures. Underclocking is the opposite of Overclocking which gives you a slower operation speed to reduce power consumption and temperature, as well as cooling requirements. Computer components that are usually overclocked in the overclocking community include processors (CPU), video cards (GPU) and RAM.

Aim and purpose
The purpose of this mini project is to learn how to increase the performance of my computer without spending too much money on complicated cooling, and finding out my max overclock. Some questions I plan to handle are:
• Which settings will I need to change.
• What overclocking will cost
• How big of a performance gain I will get in my case

Method
To learn how to overclock a CPU I read up on the overclocking scene and about the different terms. After acquiring some knowledge I followed a guide step by step that I found on overclock.net, I practicing and using this guide. I started up my computer, and changed the settings in the Ai Tweaker by entering the bios when starting the computer. I did this by simply clicking the F2 button while the computer was booting(starting), then I followed their step by step guide and changed my settings to these.
Theoretical background
Processor
The processor, also called CPU (Central Processing Unit), is the brain of your computer, this is the most popular component to overclock because of the gains in performance. It is the component that handles most of the calculations the computer has to do. The Cpu operates at speeds...

Costs
I had a total cost of 600SEK for a compact water cooling system produced by corsair that was needed to lower the operating temperature to a safe level.
Performance gains
After 2 hours spent configurating the settings what I achieved with help from the Swedish and British forums, with my specific CPU I was able to gain a 29% increase in performance, with a 0.4 VCore increase to 1.32 volts and standard being 1.28 volts. And a x48 multiplier achieving a max overclock of 4800 Mhz (4.8Ghz) standard being 3700Mhz (3.7Ghz).
