Organic farming is agriculture that relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost, and biological pest control. While many farmers boast organic farming, only the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) can actually determine if the farm is truly organic. If a farmer or individual is caught labeling their products as organic when they aren’t USDA certified organic, they can face a fine of $11,000.00 per offense. There are different levels of organic. For produce or other crops to be labeled 100% organic, it must meet certain criteria. It must be USDA certified and contain no less than 95% organic ingredients. To be labeled as being made with organic ingredients, it must be USDA certified and contain at least 70% organic ingredients. Crop rotation is the consecutive cultivation of different crops in a fixed order in the same fields. Crop rotation began as early as the nineteenth century. This aspect of farming helps to prevent soil erosion, as well as provide the soil with extra nutrients. Modern farming is generally considered cheaper than organic farming. In traditional farming they are allowed to use pesticides and GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) to help yield crop and help keep up with the demand. These have been linked to economic damage and health problems. The use of artificial fertilizer has been linked to a reduction to the soils fertility. The use of biocide chemicals to prevent weeds and pests, can leave the crops contaminated with harmful chemicals. To start, labeling something as organic is specific and determined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The regulations set are extremely specific and it is relatively difficult to meet the standards. The pesticides must be natural, and be part of the approved list established by the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 (6). The crop must also be void of any prohibited substances for at least three years. The time limit is set to allow room for chemicals, which may have an effect on the crop, may reside over time to become less abundant. This is only a pre-requisite to even have the crop to be considered organic, meaning that the crop may still fail the certification of being organic. The crop that is used is also prohibited from going through genetic engineering.
Firstly we need to define in detail what organic produce, natural produce, are and how they differ. In order for a product or produce to be classified organic it must abide by USDA requirements for organic food. Organic farming prohibits the use of toxic and persistent chemicals in favor of more “earth-friendly” practices that work in harmony with nature. Knowing the specifics about organic foods will help a person determine whether they would prefer to eat organically or non-organically. The term ‘organic’ is a label that indicates that the food has been produced through the appropriate approval methods (“Organic Standards”). There are certain requirements that must be met by the USDA-accredited certifying agent. This certifying agent approves these requirements before the food can be labeled as an organic food. Organic operations must protect natural resources, save biodiversity, and use only the approved substances.

Organic foods are those grown without the use of growth hormones, antibiotics, synthetic pesticides, or chemical fertilizers. Genetically modifying crops is also not preformed in organic farming. Soil fertility can be maintained using crop rotation, cultivation practices, and cover crops. Natural fertilizers and pesticides are still considered to be included in organic farming (Winter & Davis, 2006). Products that are controlled with cultivation conditions rather than chemical-synthetic pesticides include organic products (Woese, Lange, Boess & Werner Bogl, 1999). The use of synthetic pesticides and materials falls under conventional farming. If the materials are on the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances, it can, however, be considered organic. A process that chemically changes a substance extracted from naturally occurring sources is considered a synthetic material (Winter & Davis, 2006).
For years organic farmers and conventional farmers have feuded over which is superior. Organic farmers argue that their product is more eco-friendly because they do not use the synthetic chemicals and fertilizers conventional farmer’s use. Conventional farmers argue that their product is healthier and yields more. People tend to have stereotypes regarding the two types of farmers. Organic farmers are usually thought of as liberal, hippy, tree-huggers while conventional farmers are usually thought of as right-wing, industrialists. Obviously, some do adhere to this stereotype, but a majority of these farmers are normal, hardworking people. Although these farmers, both believe in their methods, one is no better than the other. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but there is no true superior method of crop farming.

Second, organic farming requires less energy input which equates to less money spend from the farmers in addition to lowering carbon emissions. Third, organic farming does not use pesticides. According to the World Health Center, 20,000 people die annually from the exposure of pesticides (Costa et al. 2014). Fourth, the methods that organic farmers use are better for the environment in the long run. And lastly, organic farming creates more jobs. A study done in United Kingdom shows 93,000 jobs could be created if Britain were to make a full scale shift to organic farming (Herro 2006). The term “organic” is almost everywhere in modern society, whether it’s used to promote a product or it’s debated on whether it really benefits the human diet. Organic food is heavily debated on as it appears more and more in local grocery stores and farmers markets begin to populate, it raises questions such as “Is organic food better than food grown with pesticides and biologically engineered genes?” and “Are there benefits to eating organically over foods grown in any other way?” In terms of what data and results show in research may help lead to answers to most of the heavily debated issues throughout discussions on organic food.
They take pride in caring for the land, water and natural resources in several ways. Chemical farming has become such a cultural norm that humans have turned a blind eye to what is really happening behind the scenes and have come to accept what the big manufacturing companies have told us. What these companies don’t want us to know is that when you produce food on a conventional farm you are producing food that is harmful to the environment. Organic farming has mushroomed drastically in importance and influence worldwide from its modest beginnings in the first half of the last century. Organic farming is production of food and livestock without the use of herbicides, pesticides, weedicides, fertilizers or genetically modified organism and use natural resources such as manure and compost instead. In other words, it is a production system which maintains the quality of soil ecosystem as well as human beings. According to IOWA State University, “the chemicals were not used for farming before World War 2. A number of munitions used in farming have contributed to field of agriculture. For instance, ammonium nitrate used as ammonium nitrate fertilizer”.
Agriculture is the industry that I am choosing to reflect upon that is one of the top industries in the United States and therefore I felt it to be a good industry to focus on.
