My Socialization into nursing after coming out of school was not a pleasant one. I can remember on my second night out of orientation, I was given 2 blood transfusions and a new admit coming. I was so upset I didn’t know what to do. That is the first time I heard the phase “nurses eat their young.” I went to the charge nurse to see if she was available to help. Of course she said that she had a lot of paper work and was not able to help me at that time. The other nurses on the floor had their patient load that they needed to get situated. I just broke down and cried like a baby. Some of the older nurses did come to help me as the night went on. I was very grateful and I learned what team work was that night. She always made me feel like I was stupid and didn’t belong in nursing. I started to question is nursing for me. I had to evaluate the whole situation I was in. I didn’t want to let my family down or feel like a failure so, I decided to stay with nursing and do the best I could. As time went on this nurse finally started to treat me like I belonged there and I stayed on that same unit for six years. My experience with this socialization have thought me to help every new nurse out to the best of my ability. It also thought me the value of teamwork. Most importantly, it thought me how to not give a nurse without much experience a heavy patient load starting out.
According to American Nurses (2015) today bulling have long existed in healthcare; it was an ugly secret that no one wanted to talk about. I feel that I was being bullied during that time of my nursing career. I was accepting of the bullying until I learned different from other employees. I am taking a step now to reach a goal by continuing my education to get my BSN. Here is a list of other ways that I can reached my goals for my practice. I presume the role transition from academic nursing student to Graduate Nurse will be challenging and rewarding. In their findings, the researchers Doody, Tuohy & Deasy (2012) stated that for a successful transition NGNs need to be competent in a range of domains: interpersonal skills, managing workloads, providing health information, communication, and prioritising care delivery. Although I believe I am competent in the above specified areas, I am still not confident that I would get sufficient support in the hospital environment in terms of knowledge sharing, moral support and being given constructive feedback. Constructive criticism increases confidence in the work role and reduces stress in an individual (Doody, Tuohy & Deasy, 2012). In my previous professional placements I have been able to demonstrate my competency to work in the healthcare environment. I have received positive feedback from placement educators, buddy nurses and patients. Despite being competent in a range of the above areas NGNs may still face transition shock.
Licensed practical nurses (LPN 's) fill an important role in modern health care practices. Nursing process is an integral aspect of my job because it’s been utilized in all stages of my practice. Since assessment is part of each activity the nurse does for and with the patient. In effect, assessing is a continuous process carried out during all phases of the nursing process. It is important to note that the purpose of assessment is to establish a database about a client’s response to health concerns or illness in order to determine the nursing care needs.

On the first day of my clinicals for my certification as a Nurses Aid, an older nurse who had been working at this care center for almost twelve years, looked my group in the eyes and with the least emotion possible told us “The people here are going to die, so do yourself a favor and don’t get too attached.”. As I have progressed through this semester learning about numerous nursing philosophers, I have poured over the readings trying to identify my place in the world of nursing theory. How am I supposed to create a theory with meaning and purpose? As I reflected on this question, an obvious and simple answer kept coming to mind. Why did I decide to become a nurse in the first place? What about nursing pulled me in to this profession? When I began to think of my nursing journey in this light, my personal nursing philosophy became obvious to me.
Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. Apparently there was an incident at school where a little boy was acting out and Bryan told our teacher that the little boy was agitated, and to give him some medication to calm him down. As demonstrated by Bryan, nursing is ongoing profession that promotes the health and well-being of individuals.
To make good nursing decisions, nurses require an internal roadmap with knowledge of nursing theories. Nursing theories, models, and frameworks play a significant role in nursing, and they are created to focus on meeting the client’s needs for nursing care. The view of nursing is now more in depth and well rounded than before attending this class. Also, I now have a better understanding that scientific knowledge has a huge impact on nursing. Before taking these specific classes this semester I did not realize how much of a role science played in the nursing career. This quarter has really shown me that a nurse is not a "task monkey." The most surprising thing that I learned this semester was the abundance of knowledge that a nurse has to have in variety of areas such as assessment, legal, risk prevention, and educator just to name a few. Saying that you are a registered nurse is a broad statement. Registered nursing is a job that has many aspects. Registered nurses work in many different settings and they carry out many different routines. As a registered nurse you could be exposed to many different opportunities. My goal is to be a registered nurse but, I need to learn a lot. Becoming a being a registered nurse requires a lot of hard work and effort but, if I focus on my goal I will be able to achieve it.
Socialization into nursing is a concept that is discussed in nursing books, colleges, and within nurses themselves. The first year of employment is the first critical for me as a new graduates. It is exciting and new but also intimating and overwhelming as well. I feel like I really depend on my senior coworkers more than ever. Learning any new role is derive from a mixture of formal and informal socialization (Black, 2014). Formal socialization involves planned experiences, such as performing physical assessments, developing nursing diagnoses, and clients teaching. This career consists of providing care for people of all ages and helping them with managing their conditions. I chose this career because my mother is an rn and my family has a strong presence in the medical field. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills, or talents needed, salary, benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.
