Netiquette; The Keys to Succeeding in an On-Line Environment

Etiquette is defined, on dictionary.com, as the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group. This is something that everyone knows. Each person may view it differently and have different ideas of what is considered acceptable and what is not. However, etiquette is a well-known subject. What is netiquette then you may ask? Just as you wouldn’t go through someone’s mail at their house, you shouldn’t read other people’s emails or other private documents online. It is important not to abuse your power online also. If you are more knowledgeable or have more power than others’, it may be tempting to take advantage of that. However, in order to respect others and to keep netiquette intact, this cannot happen (Shea 2011). Being forgiving of other people’s mistakes is one thing we should never forget. When online it is easy to make mistakes. There is usually so much going on around us that it can become difficult to focus solely on what we are doing online. Thus, leading to mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes sometimes, so we all need to be understanding and forgiving of this (Shea, 2011).
A great rule is simply to follow the same standards you do in real life. All of the things that fall under Netiquette have just been modified from rules and guidelines of real life to fit online worlds. While it may seem easier to get away with things on-line then in real life, that doesn’t make it ok. Remain ethical and follow the laws while online. It is not ok to do something online that you wouldn’t do in any other part of your life. Treat any emails with respect & confidentiality i.e. do not share with anyone that should. Never walk away from your computer so that someone else can read your emails or even worse be in a position where someone could send an email on your behalf.

The Internet offers many benefits but it also creates many threats that undermines our personal privacy. Concerns about loss of privacy are not new. But the computer's ability to gather and sort vast amounts of data and the Internet's ability to distribute it globally magnify those concerns [1]. Privacy concerns on the Internet are centered on improper acquisition, improper use of personal information such as intrusions, manipulation, discrimination, identity theft, and stalking of personal information. Today the Internet stretches our geographic boundaries and force us to deal with global ethic based on moral principles held to be valid across the cultures. Due to the nature of the Internet, our personal information may be transmitted over the internet and that the transfer of personal information may be made to any country in the world, regardless of the extent of any data protection laws and regulations in any of those countries.
The Information Age has emerged with speed, excitement, and great promise. The electronic eyes and ears of technology follow us everywhere. There are those enamored with the rush of technology, who b elieve that the best of worlds is one in which everyone can peer into everyone else's lives. In fact, we now live in a world consumed with "the ecstacy of communication" (Karaim 76). Americans line up to reveal their darkest secrets of their m ost intimate moments, or just "hang out their dirty laundry" on the numerous television talk shows. The more exposure, the better. So it may be absurd that we should worry that our privacy is being endangered, our personal life and even our se crets made public. The loss of privacy is on the fast track, and the high-tech Information Age is a willing conspirator. Somebody, somewhere, may know something about you that you'd prefer to keep private: how much you earn a year, what you paid for yo ur car or house, whether you've had certain diseases, what your job history is. Your medical, financial, consumer, and employment records are in computers and may be flying through cyberspace without your knowledge or consent.
The essay "Forgiveness," written by June Callwood, explores the concept of forgiving and how it influences people's lives for the better. Her work describes many components of forgiveness, such as how difficult it can be to come to terms with, why it is such a crucial part of humanity, and how it affects all people. Her essay aims to prove that forgiveness is the key to living peacefully and explains specific examples of people who have encountered extremely difficult situations in their lives- all of whom found it within themselves to forgive. To clearly portray this message in her writing, Callwood uses several strategies. She includes fear inducing statistics, makes many references to famous events and leaders, and uses a serious convincing tone, all of which are very effective.

Now with the introduction of the internet it is becoming increasingly difficult to control the publication of personal and private information. Any information that is collected should not be used for any other purpose except for what it was originally accepted.
When interacting online, it is essential for an individual to conduct themselves in a professional and polite manner. This is one of the primary reasons Virginia Shea’s rules of Netiquette consists of the succeeding principles. The first rule is to remember that the individual reading your mail is human, and has feelings. In other words, it is unacceptable to post anything that couldn’t be said face-to-face, and it is paramount to notify readers when flaming. Second, your behavior in real life should mirror your decorum online. Essentially, an individual’s behavior should remain within the scope of the law. The motivation and tendency of people to forgive others remains an important topic of discussion. In today’s society most people at some period have experienced feeling of un forgiveness towards friend, or relatives. “Forgiveness was defined as the ability to relinquish of resentment towards others” (Baskin & Enright, 2004, p. 80).

Everyone, at some point in their lives, has made a mistake. Sometimes we get lucky and only falter a little, making it through the problem relatively intact. Other times, we mess up a lot and have to fix what was damaged over a long period of time. However, the same is true for most, if not all cases—those who make the mistake learn from it. Often times, our failures teach us valuable lessons that we only gain because of the experience we gain after messing up.
After reading the article “Technology Etiquette in the Workplace” By Ellen Reddick, I realize that I am in violation of many technology etiquette guidelines. One guideline I violate quite frequently is I do not turn away from the computer when holding a conversation. Even though most of the time I am doing work while conversing, I should be able to make time for people after I finish my work. In the article it says, “If you’re working on your laptop and someone enters the room to talk to you, close your laptop and focus on them” (Reddick, 2011 p.8). Even though we have computers at school, I still have to learn how to turn away from it, and I have to learn to focus on the person talking. Another guideline I violate with my phone is texting when it is not urgent. Being an average American teenager I am connected to my phone; I’m almost connected by the hip quite literally. As technology advances and people are conducting college online, the use of proper netiquette is becoming a must. One must follow certain rules when sending out email or when posting in an online classroom forum. There is not one person that likes to be flamed or embarrassed in an email or online forum. The positive and negative effects that one experiences in an online forum can have great impact on how that person responds to future discussions or emails. By following the proper core netiquette rules outlined by Virginia Shea, one can avoid such things as flaming and have a pleasant online experience.
