Etiquette is defined, on dictionary.com, as the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group. This is something that everyone knows. Each person may view it differently and have different ideas of what is considered acceptable and what is not. However, etiquette is a well-known subject. What is netiquette then you may ask? Just as you wouldn’t go through someone’s mail at their house, you shouldn’t read other people’s emails or other private documents online. It is important not to abuse your power online also. If you are more knowledgeable or have more power than others’, it may be tempting to take advantage of that. However, in order to respect others and to keep netiquette intact, this cannot happen (Shea 2011). Being forgiving of other people’s mistakes is one thing we should never forget. When online it is easy to make mistakes. There is usually so much going on around us that it can become difficult to focus solely on what we are doing online. Thus, leading to mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes sometimes, so we all need to be understanding and forgiving of this (Shea, 2011).
A great rule is simply to follow the same standards you do in real life. All of the things that fall under Netiquette have just been modified from rules and guidelines of real life to fit online worlds. While it may seem easier to get away with things on-line then in real life, that doesn’t make it ok. Remain ethical and follow the laws while online. It is not ok to do something online that you wouldn’t do in any other part of your life.
