28. Negative Self-Talk
What is your immediate reaction following a bad event or an unfortunate day? Do you move on, or do you start blaming yourself for something that was entirely out of your control? If you’re fidgeting right now because you’re guilty of the latter then your negative self-talk is fueling feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression. You can reduce your stress levels by finding the positive in every situation. Don’t beat yourself up when something isn’t going your way, dust yourself off and promise to get it right the next time.
29. Alcohol
For many, alcohol is simply something to enjoy in a social setting. Unfortunately for others it is something they turn to after a difficult day. You drink to feel better, to relax and

Smoking
The same can be said of smoking, you turn to cigarettes when you feel anxious, but it isn’t helping you calm your nerves. The initial calm the cigarette brings is merely temporary. You see, the more you smoke the more you need to smoke them. You have a nicotine addiction which is intensifying the cravings. So, while your initial cigarette will give you a boost your body will soon need another. Yes, quitting produces withdrawal symptoms, however, they are but temporary and the long-term effect will be improved mental health and physical health,

There has been a significant link found between anxiety and a sedentary lifestyle (according to a systematic review, Teychenne, https://bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12889-015-1843-x). You already know that you should be exercising at least three times a week, but you should also get up and move around every half hour.
33. Dehydration
Fluids are just as important to your mental health as your diet. According to the Mayo Clinic dehydration can result in light headedness, muscle fatigue, increased heart rate, anxiety, panic, and confusion (http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dehydration/symptoms-causes/dxc-20261072). Poor hydration leaves you with low blood pressure, an ability to concentrate, and exhausted. If your body can’t function properly, how will your mind? It’s easier than you realize to end up dehydrated so take care to drink plenty of water throughout your day.
34. Oversensitivity
If someone cutting you off in traffic or a nasty comment is enough to implode your day… you’re guilty of being oversensitive. Your cortisol levels will only increase causing you to gain weight, your bone density to drop, a decrease in your immune system, and more. Learning to let things go is the key to improving your mental health. You can’t meltdown at every inconvenience or
As Herie and Skinner state “Beverage Alcohol can be described as a depressant drug which diminishes the activity in parts of the brain and spinal cord in accordance with the amount of alcohol in a person’s bloodstream” (Herie & Skinner, pg. 42). With its long history and unique properties such as the cure of all diseases “prolongs life, clears away ill humours, revives the heart and maintains youth”, alcohol is often related to tradition and expressions; many of these traditions are adaptation from earlier times where it was believed alcohol reflected water of life (Herie & Skinner, 2010). This is quite evident in Days of Wine and Roses where Joe is first seen drinking because “it was part of his job” and because “he had to because of everyone
1. Summary: From small incidences, we can distinguish two types of people: the ones who sigh in frustration out of small mistakes and those who promptly deal with them without uttering any more than a single complaint or sigh. According to Michael D. Robinson(PHD at North Dakota State University), how we cope with these most dull incidents can reveal a lot about us as humans and our temperaments. In fact, this small deviation in behavior can prove detrimental to our health long term. Just as significantly stressful events can cause stress hormones to flood throughout our body, these small incidents can harm us according to Nancy Nicolson(associate professor of psychiatry and psychology at Maastricht University). Furthermore, Nicolson points to a 10-15% increase in cortisol levels for such small annoyances, which may be small compared to the 100% increase that we usually experience from greatly stressful events such as tests, but when accumulated over time, can lead to a bad combined effect. Carmen Sandi further states that feeling chronically stressed can weaken the immune system and increase heart disease. Rosalind S. Dorlen adds on, claiming that mental strategies can be practiced to help us exercise the brain region responsible for reasoning as long as we train ourselves to deal with this persistent tissue. Next, the article lists 5 signs of stress and how to deal with them. Often, we feel inconvenienced about a situation such as when a bus comes late and view our waiting of it as a “waste of time”. Perhaps, Dorlen concludes, we should try to see why the bus may have been late and take the issue from their perspective such as a maj...

Exercise regularly. Physical activity plays a key role in reducing and preventing the effects of stress. Nothing beats aerobic exercise for releasing pent-up stress and tension.
Alcoholic beverages have been around for more than 8000 years and despite the World Health Organisation claiming that the global consumption of alcohol has remained roughly the same since 1990, the main groups who do drink are now drinking a lot more heavily. This is shown in the article, Alcohol pricing: Mulled Whines et al. (2013) where it explains how binge drinking was once a rarity in Spain as alcoholic beverages were only consumed mildly with food. However, nowadays during the night at the Plaza de Espana in central Madrid it is now flocked with many groups of people who have been drinking on a binge which results to vomiting and mess on the streets. Pitts (2010) explains that the social benefits associated with drinking alcoholic beverages include that it ‘produces a sense of relaxation, wellbeing and even euphoria in individuals, which enhances their enjoyment of whatever activity they are participating in’, also it can help ease stress and make you more confident in your actions. However, alcohol also has social costs as The Economist et al. (2013)
Overall drinking alcohol is definitely not the wisest decision to take. Alcoholism is a very serious condition that can only be treated with consistent care and determination. Today around 18 million Americans suffer from alcoholism or alcohol abuse. Many die from alcohol abuse or kill someone else in the process. Drink responsibly. (www.nlm.nih.gov 1)
Alcohol is very commonly turned to because it distracts the mind from the problems we face in life. Zailckas states:
Alcoholism, as opposed to merely excessive or irresponsible drinking, has been thought of as a symptom of psychological or social stress or as a learned, maladaptive coping behaviour. More recently, and probably more accurately, it has come to be viewed as a complex disease in its own right. Alcoholism usually develops over a period of years. Alcohol comes to be used more as a mood-changing drug than as a foodstuff or beverage served as a part of social custom or religious ritual.
Alcohol is a depressant derived from the fermentation of natural sugars in fruits, vegetables and grains. These are brewed and distilled into a wide range of beverages with various alcohol contents ( www.abovetheinfluence.com ) Alcohol is considered the most common and widely used drug in in the world today. For many Americans alchol is a fairly common part of their regular lives and/or routines. A large scale survey of adults taken in the US has shown that 9% of the people surveyed admitted to alchol dependence or abuse in the past 12 months and more that 30% reported to so...
I feel that some people drink in order to knock down or at least lower the wall of insecurities they have built up inside them, even for just an instant. For example, my friend Mike attempts to be "a ladies-man" but seems to fall short of that role, becoming merely a friend to the girls he's interested in and nothing more.
Alcohol has been in the world for many centuries and has become a pain but also somewhat of a solution to society. It can be viewed as something to be a social gathering that brings friends together or it can be taking as destruction to someone. Over the years alcohol has played many roles in the world but it plays an even bigger role in substance abuse. Doctors have made several points that it is okay to have a drink every now and again but people need to realize when one drink has become too many. The ideal of having a drink with friends or going out and having an occasional drink is acceptable; However, is it still acceptable when a person find their selves having a drink first thing in the morning or runs to a drink to solve their people.
Underage drinking causes people to make bad decisions, such as; driving while intoxicated, becoming pregnant, and making a complete fool out of themselves. While intoxicated, are just being a few instances that can and will impact your life forever. Some individuals don’t understand what alcohol really does to the body. Beer has empty calories that will make you gain weight. Which is why a lot of alcoholics have larger stomachs, or another term many people use for these large stomachs is, “beer belly.” Some people may say that alcohol helps you escape your problems and is a stress relevant. Alcohol will not only bring more stress onto your life, it will also bring more problems. As much as people may feel alcohol helps, it really won’t help.
Alcoholism is defined as a pattern of drinking in which harmful consequences result for the drinker, yet, they continue to drink. There are two types of drinkers. The first type, the casual or social drinker, drinks because they want to. They drink with a friend or with a group for pleasure and only on occasion. The other type, the compulsive drinker, drinks because they have to, despite the adverse effects that drinking has on their lives.
I frequently think about the effects of words on the healing body and mind. One of the things that I focus on in my therapeutic pursuits is "positive self talk," wherein I try to take those automatic negative statements my brain tosses out and change the dialogue to something more productive.
The pros of exercise can maintain the levels of stress and anxiety in a variety of ways. Simple exercises like walking around your neighborhood or on a treadmill can ease the amount of stress in your life. Scientists say that a 10-minute walk temporary reduces anxiety and depression levels by 25% over the next 5 years of your life (Exercise for Stress and Anxiety). This study shows how simple,...
