1. Interracial marriage used to be seen as a more. It was illegal for people of different races to marry each other and was punishable by the law. Although times have changed and one cannot go to jail for this act, there are still some religions and cultures that frown upon marrying outside of there religion or race. 2. One behavior that was once viewed as “non-deviant” was smoking cigarettes. Whether it was in buildings, restaurants, or even class rooms, smoking was seen as a normal act that everyone participated in. However, now that we have a better understanding of what smoking does to ones body and the people around them, there have been changes in beliefs toward this act. People do not view it as this harmful act anymore, it is viewed …show more content…
with disgust and no accepted by majority of the population. 3. An example of a behavior that would be viewed as deviant under the absolutist perspective would be walking around in public with no shoes on. Although there is no rule against this act it is viewed as unusual. It is not considered “normal” for an individual to walk on sidewalks or streets without anything on there feet. 4. An example of a behavior that would be viewed as deviant under the relativist perspective would be chewing with ones mouth open. Although some people would find this as deviant there are some individuals that would not. They would simply view it as the way one person eats as apposed to simply being rude. 5.
Negative deviance can be seen in Cameron Hooker. This man kidnapped, tortured, and mentally abused a woman for months on end. With this, he coerced her into listening to his every command and even go back to him when he allowed her to go out in public. Not only did he break several laws but he also broke moral codes embedded into society without showing any kind of remorse for his actions. 6. Someone who is an example of rate busting in society is someone who tries to work over time in a company. They go into work early, is the last person to leave, and takes any initiative to complete a task given to them. They are willing to go whatever it take to excel and show others that they are great at what they do. 7. People who can reflect deviance admiration are rap artist. They idolize violence as well as excessive partying and degrading women. Although this is true, they still have huge followings off children and young adults that look up to them and wise to be just like them in every way possible. 8. Someone who is an example of positive deviance is Martin Luther King Jr. He was willing to do whatever it took and gain equal rights for his people. Whether it was threats against is life, family, or going to jail forever, he didn't let that stop him. He motivated others to stand up for what they believe in no matter the consequences or
repercussions.
It can take the form of religion, crime, or political ideology for example. Deviance is a never ending cycle because society itself is deviant. There is no question just by taking a general look at society, there is much deviance away from universal moral principle. Yet, when one speaks out against it, they are called a social deviant. The reverse is also true. Criminals are social deviants because they go against societal norms placed in law. As deviants gain attention, they will continue to be deviants. In The Dark Knight Rises, Bane and Batman represented the different levels of deviance. What they did individually can be judged as deviant or not. However, in the larger scale, both of their actions were deviant when they went against the social norm of corruption. Gotham shows what can happen when social norms constantly change. It is able to be persuaded by whatever social conditions are present. This can sway a population to accept a path that may lead it to
Although society has progressed immensely, the freedom to marry someone of a different ethnicity is relatively new. The anti-miscegenation laws that were adopted by so many states were created in colonial times.

The movie The Boondock Saints provides an excellent example of positive deviance through innovation. The Social theory of deviance can easily explain the brothers’ actions. The movie can be used to study deviance as the brothers kill people who are mafia members, breaking the norms of society. Even though the acts they are committing are clearly illegal and deviant, the people of South Boston do not react in a negative way. Since the Social theory is very broad, it will be easier to look at the brother’s acts under three sub theories: Labeling, Conflict and Strain theories.
Societies are founded on various social norms. Norms can best be defined as a set of acceptable attitudes and practices by a given society. These norms however are found to vary from one society or cultural setting o the other. Deviance on the other hand is simply when one does something that goes against the set societal norms. Deviance is gauged on a scale of attitudes and behavior contradicting to acceptable social standards (Samuels, 2012).
Goode, E. (2011). Constructionist Perspectives of Deviance. Deviant Behavior (Ninth Edition ed., ). Upper Saddle River, NJ : Prentice Hall, Inc..
There exists conflicting theories among sociologists in the area of determining why a person is considered to be a deviant, and the reasons behind why he or she has committed a deviant act. From a positivistic perspective, deviance is based on biological or social determinism. Alternatively, from a constructionist perspective, deviance is created and assigned by society. Both perspectives seek to give a theory for why a person may become known as deviant. Although they both view similar acts as deviant, the basic differences between positivists and constructionists theories are clear.
Deviance is the term that s used for the type of behavior that does not comply or rather, goes against the norms of the society. Crime is an evident example of deviance and this has been used in a great way in this film. The film revolves around Derek who chooses to leave the path of deviance
After reading all four articles, it has come to my attention that deviant behavior is everywhere in our society, and all around the world. Different cultures have different norms and morals making things we believe are normal, deviant. Deviance can be seen in everything, sexual intercourse, rock n roll, and even so much as technology.
A type of deviance that has had a swaying of opinion over the years is drug use. According to Webmd.com “Drugs are chemicals that tap into the brain's communication system and disrupt the way nerve cells normally send, receive, and process information. There are at least two ways that drugs are able to do this: by imitating the brain's natural chemical messenger...
It is amazing how there are so many different views on what is considered deviant, bad or good. There are so many cultures with different beliefs as to how people should act and that has a huge influence on the perception of deviance in the world today.
Our society as a whole is beginning to evolve into numerous classifications. Our society branches off of the social norm structure that we have thrived from for our whole existence. Now however, people in society are going throughout their lives not always aware of the impacts that their choices and influences make on the everyday world around them. From the time people are able to grasp the concept of right and wrong until it is their turn to pass down what is right or wrong, they are not only affecting the social structure of life, but the lives of so many around them, whether they may know it or not. Although most people in society try to avoid the negative forces around them, it is now becoming an excruciating challenge to avoid the pressure and rise to a daunting task. With so many types of deviance floating around the air, it is now nearly impossible to try and not get exposed to deviance and the consequences that come with it. Deviance does not just occur in one place either. Now, it is harder than ever to not catch this behavior. It is
"Deviance, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. There is nothing inherently deviant in any human act, something is deviant only because some people have been successful in labeling it so." – J.L. Simmons
Positive deviance is sometimes viewed as an oxymoron. Some sociologists believe that positive deviance helps to clarify the nature of consequences of deviant behavior.Positive deviance is a behavior that exceeds normal standards in a positive way. positive deviance is innovative, virtuous, or altruistic behavior.
Sociology defines deviance as a behavior that violates norms set by a society, the violation of which leads to social disapproval. Social deviance can range in severity from acts such as murder and incest to simple body modifications like tattoos, and even the smallest departure from the norm can be seen as deviance. Social deviance is also relative to the community in which it is seen, for example one society might consider driving on the right side of the road normal while it could be seen as deviant for others. So as a way to explore the topic of minor deviant behaviors, and public reaction to those behaviors, this paper will discuss the results of social experiments involving
