Whenever students go into an English class, their teachers almost always bring up writing styles. Unfortunately, not many instructors explain what a writing style is. They just ask the students, “What is your writing style?”. At that point, most students do not respond and just look down at their notebook. Lunsford defines style as, “...how a message is presented, whether that message is in writing, in speech, in images, or in another form” (511). Style gives a story an overall picture. It allows the readers to visualize the narrative and comprehend it easily. Style is important to writers because they want their audience to connect with their piece. If there is no connection, then the story will not be as successful as it could be. There are many parts to writing a narrative. The main idea, the setting, the background information, and more. The most important element of a narrative is the illustration. The details are what keep a …show more content…
Throughout my years in high school, I have always struggled with my writing. Fortunately, I have been able to establish a writing style that aligns with my identity. I believe that creating a rhetorical situation helps me create a good essay. For this narrative project, I am focusing on supplying my audience with the physical and emotional details that I felt. This piece will talk about my Taekwondo career, how I went about the sport as well as how it affected my relationship with others. I do not believe my audience will connect to my story as much as I would like them to if I do not talk about my emotions and how my family and friends felt about the situation. The message I want readers to come across is one that is universal, no matter who I am speaking to. If I can write this next project and get the details across, the audience will be able to comprehend the theme more
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
In our modern society, we have forgotten the art of writing. When we write, we think to ourselves, the longer the sentence, the more intelligent I will sound. Many may say it is by writing long sentences. But is it all that true? In this piece of writing I would like to focus on an essay written by Verlyn Klinkenborg, Several Short Sentences About Writing. In this essay he explains how and why when we write, we should keep our sentences short. he also explains why students should be assigned essays that are not determinate on other sources as evidence. I will also be comparing this to a piece written by Sarah Manguso, Ongoingness. I will be comparing these two pieces on their writing style, and their essayistic ideas. My belief is that we need
Using this style of writing puts a lens, so to speak, on how the reader is going to read the story, there are no outside details from
Stylish writing has never been much of an issue before reading Strunk and White and Williams. I personally would interpret style as being an individual refection of one’s self. In reading “The Element of Style” and “Style Toward Clarity and Grace” I learned that style isn’t necessarily just a reflection of an individual’s style but it is also how the many rules to writing are used when composing a piece. In Strunk, White and Williams’ attempts to educate formal writers on how to write stylish, understandably, and within the rules, they give great examples of the usage of correct grammar, composition, and words and expressions.
... formulate their argument by first explaining the differences between the genres and acknowledging the opposing arguments. The author does this to answer any general questions the reader may have about such an english class and also provides the benefits. The author’s purpose to writing this piece was to persuade people that the way english classes are taught needs to be changed from covering general english subjects to introduction to different types of writing. The author believes students would benefit more from these classes and prepares them better for future classes and also writing in their professional careers.
While there are people who love to read and write, there are others that do not. When a student is required to read a book for a class and that student does not enjoy reading, there are very few things they would rather do less. And when that book’s topic is about learning how to write that is the worst of it. When I was assigned to read Writing with Style by John R. Trimble, my immediate thought was that this book and assignment was going to be a struggle to get through. To my pleasant surprise, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Writing with Style provides the reader with a wide range of writing tips while being written in a fun, conversational style. This book provides easy to find writing tools that can be understood by people of varying
When I initially thought about writing style I believed that there would be some nice neat definition, and maybe a few rules that would govern writing with “style”. It turns out that I grossly underestimated this topic and while I knew that writing style would be a topic of considerable depth, I did not fully understand the degree that I would be pondering the issue of writing with “style”.
I have always been a pretty good writer. Throughout my educational career, especially in high school, I have written a lot of papers. This has provided an immense amount of practice, and has adapted my writing process through the years. The central idea to my writing process has always been to just sit down, get out a pen and paper or computer, and let it flow. Usually this works, but when it doesn’t, especially for papers that are about more complex ideas, I have to adapt my writing process to make sure that I have put everything I have in my brain onto the paper. That goes along with the mindset about writing that I have. That is, I believe that I should write every single paper like it’s going to be my masterpiece. Sometimes, there are strategies
One must remember that writing style is not something that just happens, but rather something that is developed. With the help of guides like Elements of Style, or books like Style Toward Clarity and Grace, one can begin to develop one.
There are many different forms and styles used in writing. Writing is a form of communication that is used to document and express ideas people have. Through the years as people grow and learn knew ways of writing, writing awareness of a person will evolve into a much higher level of thinking. From the first term paper a person writes in high school to the papers they hand in at the college level, the writing will have matured over the years. The authors of writing develop new and more sophisticated ways in expressing themselves through the words they use in writing. Throughout history writers have found ways in which they can achieve the goals of gaining the readers attention and keep them interested. A good form of literature doesn't just write out on paper by itself, much preparation and ideas need to be worked out before it is finished. An author can improve his or her writing by giving thought to different ways of expressing their writing. One way of improving their writing is by using voice. Voice can offer writers different ways of explaining their thoughts.
...nd out which literary styles speak to me most and engage me as a reader; the vocabulary writers use, the tone within the language they incorporate in their stories, and the point of view they tell a story are three memorable styles that I find makes for great storytelling. Though architects and writers create two completely different objects, their worlds are not all that different. Both operate under their own defining set of rules and both have their own set of creative elements to draw from. The final output of their ingenuity relies greatly upon how well each adheres to their own set of rules and how deftly each makes use of their existing creative elements. In the end, I believe the writer is an architect of storytelling.
Is college writing painful and hard to come up with good ideas? English writing is different than other languages, we must follow a series of rules to complete an assignment. First, we need to understand the basics in grammar in order to use them properly in our writing assignments. If we excel in grammar, our essay will be much more lucid and logical to read than it was originally. Writing is a skill that must be mastered through practice; thus, one cannot be proficient at it if he or she does not have enough practice. Despite how hard it is for me to formulate ideas for my essay, every time I sit and concentrate on writing, a multitude of ideas begin to flood my brain. I do not have a tremendous amount of experience in writing because in my country we do not write as much as students do in the United States due to a heavier emphasis on mathematical courses verses English literature. However, what I have come to learn is that writing plays an important role in achieving success in the academic life of a college student.
The article “How to Write with Style” was written by an American writer named Kurt Vonnegut. In this article, Vonnegut provides 8 timeless guidelines to direct the readers to build up their own way of composition. Therefore, in the following paragraphs, I will respond to several questions regarding Vonnegut’s guidelines, and relate it to my personal life experiences.
Explain how the stylistic features of at least one text you have studied help communicate particular ideas or perspectives
I am not, by any means, a Shakespeare, Stephen King, or John Grisham. It would take enormous amounts of time, practice, and effort to be considered a long shot at a Pulitzer Prize. Yet, I intend to progress my writing by setting more achievable goals, building on new ideas, and developing new skills. Also, I will use the advice of instructors and peers, and draw from previous writing experiences to mold this and future writing experiences.
