I truly believe that to have music have an effect on you, you need to be able to understand and learn more about music. Everyone, I feel, can listen to music and find what they like desirable about it. To truly appreciate and comprehend the music is to understand the building blocks that make up a composition. I know that learning about music through my musical history it has given me an appreciation for incredibly complex musical composition, as well as simple compositions. Looking at a complex composition, one can see how the different chord progressions and rhythmus evolve to make a complete “story” full of smaller statements. Concert choir was the select chorus at my school that people were selected to be a part of after a complex application process. I was lucky enough to be in the concert choir for two years. Seniors in the concert choir were to pick a song that they would sing on stage at graduation, and picking our song was a tedious process. Many songs had been discussed between the twelve of us, and some were loved, other immediately shot down, until we found the one. We ended up choosing “It’s Time” by Imagine Dragons. We all loved this song and wanted to do our best to portray it together seeing that it was going to be the last song that we ever sung together as a group. My choral director was insistent that we were going to learn the song by doing the sight and rhythm reading like we did with every piece of music we learned, even though most of us already knew this song by heart. We all bought the sheet music and separated into our four parts, and learned the song. Since I put the time into learning the linguistics and particulars of that song I have a wholesome appreciation for the music that the group Imagine Dragons made, as well as the rendition that we
