A leader is someone who resembles good character and can show the way for others and take them in the right direction for wherever they need to go. More specifically, as a section leader in marching band, it is someone who is able to help their section be able to perform to the best of their ability on and off the field. After interviewing Hempfield Area High School chemistry and forensic science teacher Mrs. Kucherer I was able to expand my knowledge on what it takes to be a excellent section leader within the band. In regards to in band, a section leader must be able to show their section how to play their music in and out of sectionals and march on and off the practice all that they can. Mrs. Kucherer has said to me that, “there will be people that will grumble at for instance, playing at 6 AM...but it is the job of the section leader to motivate everybody in the section to why that they should show up and do their part”. To add to that, a leader is someone who is able to clearly share ideas amongst others. Someone who wants to be a robust leader, they should be able to work with others with different ideas to help come to one conclusion and do what is best for the band. “A leader must be kind and not boss others around”. A section leader is not someone who can tell people what to do and give orders, they are meant to give advice and help people become better playing their music and marching drill. With this, they must have a sense of open mindness to the fact that people will grumble and complain, but it is up to the section leader to know what’s right and send a message to those people about why they are in band in the first
They need to start acting like leaders instead of normal kids in marching band, especially for the younger players because essential leaders are role models. If leaders are goofing off while they should be serious the rest of the band thinks it could goof off too. If a leader does nothing but complain, people are going to follow in his or her footsteps. Leaders also need to help freshmen with their parts because a lot of them do not have confidence in what they are playing. Section leaders should basically be a teacher during sectionals. If you made me the Drumline leader I would try my best to improve the Drumline as a whole. I would do this by helping other band members with whatever they were struggling with if that were a piece or maybe putting their feet to the music. I would try to help with any music problems including counting parts or playing accents at certain times and when not to. I would try to lift everyone up in a positive way if someone was struggling with something that day I would try to help them put that aside during Drumline or a practice to help them focus on Drumline because I know from experience whenever I have something that's really weighing down on me I go to practice and I think about that and it sets me up for failure. Introduction According to the Oxford Dictionary, a leader is defined as “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2013). Though there is a definition for what a leader is, people still have different ideas about what a leader should be and how he or she should act. There has never been a concrete idea of what a leader is; the only thing we know is that this person is the one in charge of the unit. We look at characteristics of those people we see as leaders and use those attributes to compare other people to see if they are able to be as good as, or even better than, those aforementioned leaders. We have to keep in mind that in different situations, leaders must do different tasks which indicates the need for different qualities.
My older sister loved the marching band, so I always got dragged to their performances. I could not tell what was so appealing about it all; it consisted of walking on a field while playing instruments and flags being swung in the air. Participating in a marching band was never what I intended nor wanted to do. The idea bored me, but my mom insisted.
Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. I have been a member of marching band ever since I was in eighth grade. Marching, and music itself, was almost part of my DNA, with my entire family having been involved in musical organizations before me. My journey into the world of marching band began as a timid, reserved, and anxiety-filled girl who did not know anybody else involved in the organization. I was convinced that I was going to hate it, and came home from most of our summer rehearsals in tears. That was when older members started reaching out to me; they invited me to lunches and dinners during band camp, and sat with me during breaks so that I did not have to be alone. When then leader measures what was supposed to happen with what actually happened, the leader and involved personnel will then find out if the job was completed to standard. Also the leader needs to know from the personnel involved, what to keep doing and what can be done different to get those same or better results. All feedback should be honest and factual. This is the information that the leader will use to makes thing better; to make the operation run more smoothly. All of this defines the most successful and impactful Army leaders.
What is a leader? A leader is someone who takes command and leads an organization or group to success. Anyone can be a leader but in order to become a great leader you have to have to possess certain characteristics. I will be using Odysseus from the Odyssey isas an example of a leader who has suitable characteristics. Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
Personal Narrative- Marching Band Competition This season was only the second year that I had been in marching band, even though we did do parades in middle school. The year before, I was selected to be drum major of the upcoming marching season. I was excited to meet the challenge of getting back to the state championships. It was also nerve-racking because I felt if we didn't make it to state, it would be my fault.
For many years, I have been told by teachers, family, and friends that I am a good leader.
