Chemistry ISU Rought Draft Household Cleaners What is it? Household cleaners are products such as Bleach that are created for the sole purpose of simplifying tasks that concern the maintenance of a home or building. There are many different types of cleaners, including but not limited to bleach, sanitizers and ammonia. Some cleaners can be used on almost any surface and are often used to kill bacteria. History Household cleaners, or chemical cleaners as an alternative name have been used for centuries. Ever since dated history, humans have been mixing various natural ingredients or chemicals to produce solutions that can be used to disinfect or clean their homes and their clothes. The first evidence of bleach being used was back in Egyptian civilizations, back in the year 5000 BC. The Egyptians pioneered the technique of using the sun to discolor their linens. Later on at the start of the third millennium, the humans at the time discovered that mixing ashes from burnt wood with water could create a substance called Iye, which could lighten colors. They are also praised for dis...
Today was quite a nice experience. There were a lot of volunteers in the office so it's kind of hard to have a lot of one-on-one time with patient. I ended up working closely with the hygienist for most of my time there. She showed me her day to day experiences and some techniques she uses to calm patients. It’s important to experience working with every dental professional. As a future dentist I'll be interacting with the entire dental team including the hygienist, so today I decided to stick with the hygienist.
Disinfection is applied in water as well as wastewater treatment as a finishing step so as to destroy pathogens but the cause of concern regarding the disinfection process is the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Natural organic matter (NOM) in water has been considered as the predominant DBP precursors. Disinfectants are powerful oxidants that oxidize the organic matter present in water forming DBPs. Chlorine, ozone, chlorine dioxide, and chloramines are the most common disinfectants used nowadays and each produces its own suite of chemical DBPs in finished drinking water (Richardson, 2003). DBPs so formed pose a threat to human health because of their potential to cause cancer and reproductive/developmental effects. Most developed nations have regulated concentration of DBPs so as to minimize exposure to potentially harmful DBPs while maintaining adequate disinfection and control of targeted
This literature review will analyze and critically explore four studies that have been conducted on hand hygiene compliance rates by Healthcare workers (HCWs). Firstly, it will look at compliance rates for HCWs in the intensive care units (ICU) and then explore the different factors that contribute to low hand hygiene compliance. Hospital Acquired infections (HAI) or Nosocomial Infections appear worldwide, affecting both developed and poor countries. HAIs represent a major source of morbidity and mortality, especially for patients in the ICU (Hugonnet, Perneger, & Pittet, 2002). Hand hygiene can be defined as any method that destroys or removes microorganisms on hands (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2009). According to the World Health Organization (2002), a HAI can be defined as an infection occurring in a patient in a hospital or other health care facility in whom the infection was not present or incubating at the time of admission. The hands of HCWs transmit majority of the endemic infections. As
What does happen when you mix vinegar and baking soda? While your immediate answer may be "it fizzes and turns white" there is much science behind the concept. You will find that what it "looks like" is not nearly everything behind what really happens. Baking soda and vinegar form a completely different compound (when two or more elements combine; broken down by chemical changes like adding energy as heat or an electric current), which has it’s own properties. From the particle model of matter to the way that a chemical reaction is represented in an equation, the answer is definitely complicated.
If your shampoo claims to be a non sulfate shampoo, then it indicates that it does not contain any one of the three commonly used sulfate compounds:
With the expansion of technology available to the textile industry emerged a growing want among those who produced the textiles for new colors. When this problem arose, textile producers called upon the chemistry industry to help lessen the need for textile producers to rely upon natural methods of bleaching such as sun, rain, sour milk, and urine (Britannica). While these methods had been practiced for centuries, the industry saw a definite want for a new and more efficient method of bleaching. From this point forth, chemistry’s role in the Industrial Revolution not only led to innovations in bleaching, but also led to great changes in the practice of chemistry, as we know it. In the mid-1700’s, a chemist named John Roebuck solved the problems of the textile industry with his invention of a new method for mass producing a chemical by-product known as sulfuric acid in lead chambers (Encarta 97). This discovery paved the way for sulfuric acid’s use in bleaching, and eventually led to the production of chlorine bleach, a common household product today.
Detergent comes from the Latin word detergere meaning to clean, it is defined as a cleansing agent. Therefore, water itself is a detergent. This essay looks at soap and soapless (or synthetic) detergents. Both substances we use everyday and have a big market commercially, they effect everyone. Soaps are made from natural products and soapless detergents are produced chemically, each having advantages and disadvantages.

Avoiding infection or, at least, breaking the chain of transmission is vital in any setting, but more so in healthcare environments where infections and vulnerable hosts are moving under the same roof. What needs to be done, then?
Laundry detergents have ingredients which consist of calcium and magnesium in washing solutions which provide its advantage to eradicate dirt or stains from our clothes with more efficiency than just normal water. Although laundry detergents can help remove dirt, stains, or germs like bacteria on our clothes, they may contain strong and dangerous chemicals. Laundry detergents can be a risk if swallowed, and cause nausea, vomiting, convulsions, irritated skin and eye, or even comas. In addition, you must keep these substance away from your child since they might not know what it is and might try

Long ago, washing clothes was done through the process of rubbing sand on clothes, or by smashing the article of clothing with hard rocks. Also, by dipping clothing in water which removed excess dirt. Another way to get clothes clean long ago was, boats used to carry clothes in bags and dragged the bags in the water to clean the clothes or whatever else was in the bag. Many tried to think of simpler ways to wash clothes, but there was no troubled principle to get clothes clean. For using water to remove dirt was the base principle. Some of the first washing machines were hand operated and were wash boards. Then, in 1858 was when mechanical washing machines became introduced. This was a big step, for soon people around the world would try to keep improving this marvelous invention. Shortly after, Alva Fisher was said to have made the worlds first electric washing machine around 1907. “It was not until the modern washing machine was invented that women were freed from this hard work” ( Field Enterprises Educational Corporation 45 ). However, many ...
