Horse racing is a fickle sport. One minute, a horse and its connections are on top of the horse racing world and one misstep later, it all comes crashing down.
This past Saturday, horse racing fans got a not so subtle reminder of that very fact. As Mastery cruised to a 6 3/4 length victory in the Grade II San Felipe Stakes, his back hind condylar bone sustained a fracture just seconds after crossing the wire. The injury has taken him right off the Kentucky Derby trail just as he had ascended to the top on the contenders list.
Horse racing can also be a cruel actor. As trainer Bob Baffert and owner Cheyenne Stables are left to ponder what might have been, the attention now turns to dozens of other trainers and owners who will now have an opportunity

In a change of tactics, the Dialed In colt sat and made a strong move around the turn and into the stretch for an easier than looked 5 3/4 victory. With a lively pace expected for the Kentucky Derby, he just might have the right running style. Next up should be the Florida Derby on April 1.
With only four starts, all victories, on his resume, McCracken might still have plenty of upside. Though largely untested due to the competition, the Ghostzapper colt looked very good in his 2016 finale, a workman like victory in the Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in November at Churchill Downs. He opened up his trip on the Derby trail with 1 1/2 length win in the Grade III Sam F. Davis Stakes a head of Tapwith, who returned with a stylish win in the Grade II Tampa Bay Derby.
With three wins from five starts, Tapwith could be improving at just the right time. Under the direction of trainer Todd Pletcher, the Tapit colt has the right pedigree for the 1 1/4 mile distance of the Derby. At a purchase price of $1.2 million as a yearling, it will be interesting to see how he performs against what figures to be a loaded field in either the Grade I Florida Derby or Grade I Bluegrass
Once you get them to settle down and get there mind focused on just walking and the rider then you know the bond with the rider and horse are strong. When it is time for the second run of the night you want to warm them up again but not as hard this time because he or she has already been warmed up once before this, so just a little warming up won’t hurt. When it is that time for the second run the rider will bring the horse him a set him or her up for their first barrel and make the most of the race. If you see the rider smiling then everyone knows she has done her job with this horse. The rider can make an automatic barrel horse where that horse know his job and she barely has to ask the horse for a turn or touch his face to go around that barrel. When the rider gets a horse to be like that everyone can tell they spent hours and days together. The rider worked with that horse but never made him sour or hate coming into the arena. They spent time working on flexing the horse and making sure he knew when to tuck his nose and leave it for an extra second. They will all see when they are running home how much they spend time they spend together if they are fast and smooth through the pattern and don’t have any blow ups before or after coming in and out of the arena. One of the most famed horse races in the world, fans flock to Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on the first Saturday in May to watch the most exciting two minutes of sports. The first racecourse was laid out in 1789 in Lexington, Kentucky. 100 years later, in 1875, Churchill Downs became the official home of the Kentucky Derby. The first Kentucky Derby race was run at one and a half miles in front of a 10,000 person crowd. The driver has the legal right to hit the horse for motivation in order to win a position. Network television is broadcasting the acceptance of whipping by showcasing to the viewers how the drivers are permitted to hit the horses. Whipping should be banned in horse racing. In fact, the amendment to rule 1734, involving whipping, was filed with the Secretary of State on October 13, 2016 and will be effective January 1, 2017. According to the California Horse Racing Board, “The Board proposes to amend Rule 1734 to clarify what is acceptable use of a whip by a driver . . . no driver shall use unreasonable force in whipping a horse, nor whip any horse causing welts or breaks in the skin. The proper use of a whip is meant to encourage a horse; the force it takes to cause welts or breaks in the skin is beyond the limit necessary to receive a positive response from the horse and may even produce a negative reaction” (Rules, Regulatiln & Law). One of my earliest memories of Grandpa begins with us driving to the Monmouth Park Racetrack. We sure did love to go to the track and root for Julie Krone or one of our other favorite jockeys. He loved challenges, and he especially loved the challenge of picking the ponies. He would read the race programs in the Asbury Park Press and usually pre-pick most of the day's favorite horses before ever leaving the house. Still, on arrival, we always bought the program and maybe a race sheet or two before entering the track grandstand. After picking up a couple of seats right around the finish line or maybe a little past it, back to figuring he'd go. As he went, grandpa would always point out the horses that had won recently or looked like they were due. "I have a feeling about this one" he'd say.
