Literature Review Athletic competition has been around for a long time and is growing in popularity. America’s passion for sports continues to grow as demonstrated by the amount of college and professional sports channels and magazines (Cotton, 2009). In high school, athletics can be seen as a positive motivation for student success, but can also deter pupils from academic excellence. Research on the relationship between academics and athletics is often contradicting. There are several studies, books and articles which disagree on the impact athletics have on academic achievement. Both positives and negatives are highlighted, but limited on the area of border town statistics. Positive Effects of High School Athletics Proponents of high school athletics state high school academic achievement is positively affected by athletic participation. In fact, supporters concluded high school athletics positively impacts the students not only academically but also personally and socially (Yancey, 2007). Burnett (2001) said high school athletics keep students out of other activities in which teen and young adults may get into trouble. School athletics also has a positive effect on the school culture. When students participate in athletics it reduces student absences and helps develop positive relationships between students and teachers (Yancey, 2007). Athletic participation also assist academic success after high school (Reid, 2005). Reid compared non-athletes and student-athletes who participated in junior varsity, varsity and intramural sports. Reid found the student-athletes showed higher rates of physical activity. They also smoked cigarettes at a lesser rate compared to non-athletic peers. They depend on the large paying crowds of football spectators and tickets sold. If school sports are not operating on the positive side, booster clubs are often solicit support from community members. When discussing financial limitations with coaches, administrators and parents, it was concluded that it was not a reasonable explanation for eliminating high school sports. Again, booster clubs and parent groups could be counted on in order to compensate for the lack of funds available for sports. Athletics usually have a huge fanbase, especially high school football and basketball. High school athletic teams with strong fan support are capable of running even with a shortage of monetary help. In Texas, high school football accounts for three-fourths of the high schools athletic budget.
Amanda Ripley argues in The Atlantic in her article “The Case Against High School Sports”, that the United States place too much attention on sports rather than academics. Ripley argues that sports programs at schools should be reduced, maybe even cut out completely. She states that there are a lot of countries that outperform America on international tests, and it is because they put more of their emphasis on academics, where the United States puts more of an emphasis on athletics. Ripley says that high school sports negatively affects academics. (1). I disagree with Ripley on this topic; I think that sports are important for young kids because it teaches them very valuable life lessons and it keeps them out of trouble.
Athletics in American schools have always been controversial for many reasons. Some of these reasons include health concerns, safety precautions, and academic significance. Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt wrote an article titled, “High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics” to present the factors of positive correlation between success in athletics and academics. I believe that athletics in high schools not only benefit students socially, but also academically.
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experiencing in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. High school athletics have a major impact on everybody that is involved with them. It can also leave a mark on people who aren’t associated with them. There are many conflicting opinions on whether high school sports have a positive or negative influence on a student’s life. Athletics in high school can have an effect on the community as a whole. In H. G. Bisssinger’s highly regarded Friday Night Lights, high school football is accurately portrayed as the most important thing in Texas.
Over the course of time, schools have invested all their finances on sports like football. Primarily, the sport had initiated as a form of recreational fun, but therefore lead into a trend. This popular trend later spread into competitiveness and in some schools, even idolized. At Premont High School, a small school in Texas, it was threatening to be shut down for the neglection of academics and a misuse of finance. All money funded was focused on being used to support all sports and the money raised, was a large amount of money. The solution was to suspend all sports and with that, changes were made. Teachers were retrained, the curriculum was raised to the appropriate standard, and too much avail, academics improved significantly. According to the article, when sports have been dominating, only 50 percent of the students were passing their classes. After changes were made, 80 percent were now passing. The author argues that with the suspension of sports, academics would be at a higher level than they are. With this argument, I agree with Ripley’s motion to cancel all sports. To many students, such as myself, it may seem irrational and absurd at first, but realistically it is a reasonable solution. Tons of money is being spent primarily to a sport and most times, aren't even at a winning season. Sports should not the prime focus. Schools are not instituted to emphasis on sports
Typically, the average day of a high school student consists of seven long hours of school; followed by an extracurricular activity. According to the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS), as of 2014, there was a record high of nearly 7.8 million high school student athletes in the United States. Two experienced authors from The New York Times have contrasting views on athletics in schools. Amanda Ripley, the author of The New York Times bestseller, The Smartest Kids in the World, argues that sports should definitely be removed from high schools across the country. The impact of college athletic programs on academics has always been a controversial and contentious topic. It seems that athletic programs have some contemplative effects on academics of colleges and universities. Different people have different ideas about how college athletic programs should be carried on. College presidents, administrations, student athletes, parents of students, and athletic trainers are along with these people who point out different facts about the fallouts of athletics on academics. A bunch of people suggest that athletic programs should be dropped from college system, while another group suggests that athletic programs should be taken care with more advertence. An analysis on the effects of college athletics on academics has two personal approaches: college athletics undermine academics, and athletics amplify academic experience.
A common denominator that successful people share is the involvement of playing a varsity sport in high school. Every high school in the United States is different, however all encourage students to get involved. Most commonly, students decide to join sports. High school sports can cause profitable effects because students live healthier lives, achieve higher grades and learn life lessons.
Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. Playing sports is especially common among young people in schools. Athletics are great and enjoyable for many reasons, but there can be a point where sports participation can go too far and become negative for children and adults. Sports specialization for young people is an increasing trend that results in sports having a negative impact on individuals and society.
Some current trends in Intercollegiate Sports are escalating expenses for big-time spectator sports, struggles over gender equity, athletes in revenue producing sports seeking rights to profit from their skills, students seeking more opportunities to play school sponsored sports, and faculty resisting the use of university resources to subsidize big time sports. Knowing about and understanding these trends are important for students, administrators, and legislators making decisions about the use of student fees and campus sport facilities. As an athletic department budget increases faster than academic budget, faculty is becoming more concerned about these decisions and how they affect higher education, and students increasingly want opportunities
Some schools force students to participate in organized school sports. However, I believe that schools should not make this a requirement. Some students may have medical conditions, family situations that don't allow them to participate in organized school sports, or they simply may not have the time.
Finally I’m in middle school and I am ready to play school sports. But I can’t. I have to wait until next year. Sixth graders should be able to play middle school sports. Players can ride the bus to games, sixth graders will get better because they are practicing with older kids, and players will get better grades because they can’t be failing a class. Sixth graders should be included in middle school sports.
Are high school sports beneficial or not for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.
