Heterosexuality has long been viewed as normal in American society. This is why those who fall on the LGBTQ+ spectrum are viewed as different, and why only recently same sex couples were granted the right to legally marry in all 50 states. Heterosexuality is not inherently normal, instead we are socialized to view it in this manner. This socialization occurs through a variety of means such as the media; religion; and other authoritarian figures including our parents, school, and the government. The cycle of heterosexual socialization that we undergo leads to one specific version of heterosexuality known as heteronormativity. A heteronormative relationship is the idea that the normal heterosexual couple is married in their mid-20’s, and subsequently have children. Not only that, but gender norms have been shown to be damaging to health. Heteronormativity also includes problems such as the lack of acceptable alternatives to heterosexuality, and the increase of violence towards and suicidal tendencies in LGBTQ+ individuals. People are beginning to combat gender norms, and in turn heteronormativity. Others scholar’s offer different approaches to addressing heteronormativity such as breaking down boxes, or viewing representations of acceptable alternatives to heterosexuality that are available to children. Regardless of how you view the problematic nature heteronormativity and the way you choose to address it, this a serious issues that affects everyone; therefore, it must directly be addressed in order to create a more inclusive
