A Beginners Guide For Proper Garbage Disposal Care.
Do you remember the days when we were constantly filling our kitchen trash cans with food waste? And, remember when that waste would rot and stink up the whole kitchen? If it wasn’t for garbage disposals, many of us would still be dealing with this issue. A garbage disposal is a great and effective way to handle common food waste in the kitchen. Disposals shred up waste, like uneaten food, into small pieces which makes it easy to pass through the drain pipe. They are also beneficial to the environment as it reduces waste. Did you know that about 20 percent of the environments waste consists of food scraps? Unlike the trash, when food waste is disposed in a garbage disposal unit it can be

Body: Although most garbage disposals are created to handle just about any type of kitchen food waste, there is definitely certain items that can cause clogs, and sometimes lead to costly damages within your unit. To keep your garbage disposal unit running efficiently for a long time, avoid putting these common waste items down your disposal unit.
Egg Shells:
One common myth with garbage disposals is that egg shells can sharpen the blades of a disposal unit. Egg shells consist of stringy membrane can get tangled around the shredder ring and blades, and shells can also cause drains to clog.

If you must put these types of food into your disposal, do so in very small quantities to avoid damage.
Non-food Items:
Kitchen garbage disposals are designed to break down food waste, and that's about it. Although it seems like common sense, you would be surprised at how many homeowners put items like glass, rubber bands, plant clippings, and more in their units. Items like these ware unable to break down enough to wash down the drain, which can lead to a clog.
Other Care and Maintenance Tips
By simply following a few basic plumbing tips you can keep your disposal unit working and operating effectively. Similar to drains, you can perform a self inspection and clean your disposals yourself. A good rule of thumb is to inspect your disposal unit and the drain pipe it is connected to at least once a month, looking specifically for issues in the units performance. In addition, running cold water when you use the disposal, letting it run until a few seconds after the disposal is turned off to ensure the waste is pushed down the pipe. Although you can perform monthly inspections, you should always schedule an annual inspection with an expert as they may notice issues that a homeowner’s often
The food that they throw away first goes to the dumpsters and then they end up in landfills. This is also where the dumpster divers, or “scavengers” as Eighner prefers to be called, begin their search for food (353). Where he mostly found a great deal of dumpsters was in the city. As he puts it, “the land is now covered with cities,” which means that there will be an abundance of trash that needs to be disposed of (361). This leads to more landfills needed to be made and that takes a toll on the earth. Dockterman has stated that “the buildup of decomposing organic material accounts for 16% of environmentally harmful methane emissions in the U.S.;” these emissions go into the atmosphere that we breath our oxygen from (Dockterman). Not only does this practice affect people survival-wise, but also the earth that billions of people live

Americans throw millions of pounds of food away every year. Although this waste is done by growers, businesses and consumers, they all share one thing in common: that much of the food thrown away is perfectly usable. According to John Oliver, Americans
Have you recently been thinking about renting a dumpster, but are unsure how the process even works? Wondering if the driveway is big enough, rental prices or whether or not a permit is necessary are just some of the concerns potential dumpster renters are faced with.
Waste management is the operation of how waste materials are handled. The affair of waste management is relevant to everyone world-wide. Wastes are materials that have no further economic use, and when disposed of, are hazardous to humans and the environment. Wastes include solid waste, liquid wastes, and air pollutants created by humans and cannot be naturally recycled. Current waste management techniques need to be completely overhauled because funding in government budget is not enough to meet standards, landfills are reaching their maximum capacity worldwide, and nuclear waste storage must be handled correctly. Waste management has been a highly thought about complication for global authorities. Due to
Hazardous Substances Many items should not be thrown into a dumpster because they contain or consist of materials that can poison groundwater after leaking from a landfill. Some substances could cause serious illness to a worker at a dumpster rental center
A landfill is a place where garbage is deposited and buried. It is also called as disposal site. A disposal site is the place where solid waste such as paper, glass and metal are buried between a layers of dirt with other materials in order to reduce contamination of surrounding land. Landfills may include internal waste disposal sites where waste producers carries out their own waste disposal at

Food waste is defined by food that is lost, wasted, or discarded and is caused through a few different processes. Food is wasted through many different ways at farms, grocery stores, and in homes. Over 40% of the food in the United States, specifically, goes to waste and 97% percent of this waste goes straight to landfills. The main issue with food waste is that the majority of food is being wasted unnecessarily. In stores, food is often thrown out because it does not meet specific standards that dictate what may be desirable to consumers. This issue of food picking is important as foods are not always being thrown away because they have gone bad, but because they have appearances that do not seem attractive. If we hope to lessen the environmental impact we have as a result of the mass
Food waste is huge issue these days. It is a huge amount of waste that ends up in landfills and can have lasting effects on the environment. One of major issues of food waste is the greenhouse gases that it produces. Methane gas is the main culprit when it comes to the gases being released. This can absorb infrared radiation and heat up the earth’s atmosphere and cause climate change. Another issue that food waste causes is, water loss due to use for production of fruits and vegetables.
Traditional methods of waste disposal have proven to be ineffective and have caused harmful effects on the environment. The most popular and inexpensive way to get rid of garbage is burial, but burying your problems does not necessarily mean getting rid of them. Landfill sites pose as severe ecological threats as these mass garbage dump yards overflow with trash and frequently contaminate our air, soil and water with hazardous wastes. About 400 million tons of hazardous wastes are generated each year1. A large-scale release of these materials can cause thousands of deaths and may poison the environment for many years. For example many industrial companies around the world cannot afford to enforce the strict pollution regulations set by many developed countries. This usually forces these types of companies to move to developing countries where pollution regulations are very lenient. These developing countries knowingly accept environmentally hazardous companies usually because they are in desperate need of employment. The harmful effects of these companies were clearly illustrated in the 1960s and 1970s when residents living near Minamata Bay, Japan, developed nervous disorders, tremors, and paralysis in a mysterious epidemic. The root was later found to be a local industry that had released mercury, a highly toxic element, into Minamata Bay. The disaster had claimed the lives of 400 people1. Since 1970 you can bet that a lot more than 400 people have died as a result of waste disposal. If the type of waste disposal were cheaper and effective we wouldn’t have to deal with waste problems, which still plague mankind today.
Currently, magnitude amounts of waste materials generated from household and industries have become one of the main factors to cause environmental pollution. Especially, as for the leftover food, the portion of leftover food out of total wastes has been continuously increased. Increases in feed cost for animal production motivated to recycle leftover food into animal feed (Cho et al., 2004a). Recycling leftover foods into animal feed has become one of the most important.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (2008), an American produces 250 million tons of garbage per year (para.2). There are different circumstances that are based on the society, environmental conditions, occupation and size of each of the different families. As Richmond (2010) stated, if no administration organizations has the responsibility or resources to concentrate their efforts on the waste disposal, then the responsibility to do that is on the nongovernmental organizations and ordinary people (para.... ... middle of paper ... ...
