McDonalds is somewhere everyone has eaten at, but do they really know what they are eating? People today trust anyone with their food in order to save time for work and other important tasks. The time spent on cooking meals in America has "fallen by half since the mid-sixties" (Pollan, "Cooked" 3). Nutrition has been put in the hands of fast food corporations around the world, and they are unfortunately concerned more about money rather than health and nutrition. In other words, the food produced by McDonalds and other fast food establishments is the unhealthiest food people can eat and often leads to serious illnesses if consumed enough. Nutrition is something that is lacking in the modern day human diet. McDonalds has played a vital role …show more content…
Many of McDonald 's beef comes from Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, or CAFOs. In CAFOs cows are fed corn and antibiotics, injected with hormones, and consume petroleum and manure they sleep in. All of these end up in our stomachs. As the saying goes, "you are what you eat." McDonalds has masked their beef by "processing them to such an extent that they appear as pure products of culture rather than nature" (Pollan, "Omnivore 's Dilemma" 115). In Pollan 's book The Omnivore 's Dilemma, he tries a cheeseburger from McDonalds himself and states "No, I could not taste the feed corn or the petroleum or the antibiotics or the hormones-or the feedlot manure," but adds, "that perhaps is what the industrial food chain does best: obscure the histories of the foods it produces" (Pollan, "Omnivore 's Dilemma" 114-115). Everyone is susceptible to McDonald 's and other fast food chain 's lies. At the end of the day we are consuming the same as the beef we eat- hormones, petroleum, feedlot manure, and antibiotics. All of these, whether by themselves or combined, can lead to health complications. Hence I believe that the amount of people who eat fast food is one of the main factors of why so many people get cancer …show more content…
The question is, why do people continuously eat fast food if they know how bad it is for them? The answer is simple, most people are unaware of what they are eating when they shove a Big Mac into their mouths, or if they are aware, they keep eating it because they cannot afford better. Carey Polis from the Huffington Post talks about this in her article about the yearly price difference of eating healthy versus unhealthy. Polis explains that “unhealthy food is about $1.50 cheaper per day, or about $550 per year, than healthy food,” and adds “while $550 per year is certainly burdensome for many people, that cost figure doesn’t include any long-term healthcare costs as a result of eating a poor diet” (www.huffingtonpost.com). While people are saving themselves $550 a year, the negative health effects McDonalds has on the human body typically leads people to spend massive amounts of money at the hospital later in life. Negative health effects from eating fast food range widely but are often more serious than people
America has always been about being the biggest nation: the biggest houses, the biggest cars, biggest cities and unfortunately the biggest bodies. There is no doubt that fast food is causing major health problems for many Americans today. In his documentary, Super Size Me, released in 2004 Morgan Spurlock decides to eat only food from McDonald’s for thirty days to see how it would affect his health. Spurlock starts out healthier than the average man for his age. Throughout the film, we can see that his health gradually degenerates and reaches a critical point, before his thirty days are over. Super Size Me is very persuasive in showing the negative effect in fast food restaurants by using logos, pathos, and ethos.
...d think that McDonald’s would jeopardize out health by using silicone and tertiary butyl hydroquinone in the food that they market to us and our kids? They lied to us about using 100% all white meat chicken for their nuggets and other chicken products, I wonder what else are they’re lying to us about? Who knows, maybe their 100% beef isn’t really beef. One can never be so sure these days.
McDonald’s is killing Americans, at least that is what Morgan Spurlock believes. In his documentary Super Size Me he embarks on a quest to not only describe and use himself as an example of the growing obesity trend, but to offer the viewers with base-line nutritional knowledge that will allow them to draw their own informed conclusions. Spurlock's primary intention is to prove through self-experimentation that eating solely McDonald's food is dangerous. His secondary intention is to denounce the rising obesity rate in American by using statistics, his own research, and the opinions of experts. His broader message is for a general audience while he tailors select chapters towards more specific demographics such as parents or McDonald's themselves.
“Today, more than 95% of all chronic disease is caused by food choice, toxic food ingredients, nutritional deficiencies and lack of physical exercise” Mike Adams (1967- present). People tend to believe our obesity epidemic is due to our high-calorie fast food restaurants. They are quick to blame others for their own mistakes and their willingness to change their eating habits. Fast food restaurants are not to blame for our obesity problem in our society but as a consumer, we are making that ultimate choice. We need to stop and think about what we are putting in our bodies and what they are doing to us. Yes, it’s true, it’s easier to find a McDonalds than a fruit or vegetable stand, but why not choose the salad with half the dressing at McDonalds
For example, a bundle at McDonald’s can feed up to four people at one time, and it only costs about fifteen dollars! So, in the long run, it is just easier to go pick up some fast food rather than wasting your time cooking an actual meal. Lastly, even though fast food is very cheap and in every corner, it is not healthy at all. Studies have proven that a person that ate McDonald’s for his meals for a full month ended up having some serious health problems. In conclusion, even though it is very easy to access and very cheap, fast food has some serious health issues and is very harmful.
When researching McDonald’s through online sources, it is clear that nutrition is a major concern of the public visiting the fast-food chain. Secondary research conducted shows that there are several case studies and other secondary source searches around the same topic. McDonald’s has often been the center of nutritional attention within the fast-food industry. Secondary research shows that the restaurant has recently made changes to the American Happy Meal to reduce the amount of French fries offered and replace the portion with fruit (Strom, 2011). In a study conducted by McDonald’s a secondary source reports the meal cuts calories by 20% for the children’s meal (Strom, 2011). This is a critical move by the organization on children’s obesity is currently a hot topic within food chains and attention is driven by the Obama administration. Secondary research also shows that although the public has major health concerns with the food chain, profits are increasing during a high point of an economic recession (Dahan & Gittens, 2008). .... Fast food industry should promote their healthy choices in their unhealthy, fatty food products by giving consumers the choice to add a variety of veggies and vitamins. They should add nutrition information regarding the products this way they can protect themselves and their customers.
First, my personal reaction to this is documentary is an eye opener. I knew McDonalds was more harmful to than other fast food places, but I never knew about the lawsuit between McDonalds and it consumers. I never saw McDonalds as having big impact on my life; this is probably because the McDonald’s in my hometown never had a super-size option. In the video, Spurlock conducted interviews to gain ...
McDonalds is one of the most well known fast food restaurants in the world. It is so popular that it sells seventy-five hamburgers every second and is shockingly also the worlds largest toy distributor (Lubin, and Badkar.) The powerful company is an overwhelming influence not only in the worlds economy, but also the worlds holistic lifestyle and health; therefore, McDonalds must be carefully monitored-carefully monitored meaning every move, every change, every single action the company makes needs to be a healthy one. Since the McDonalds business is unbelievably large, it has to manufacture a lot of food, and in a fast food business more in numbers means lower quality. But the food served isn’t lower quality. The food is not even food. It is poison! The chain restaurants food that is sold to the world population contains over 70 cancer-promoting ingredients (Roberts), not to mention it also contains preservatives that are butane-based, bleached flour, and the main ingredient found in silly putty (Breyer). It is clear that McDonalds does not sell food that anyone should be eating; yet, it poisons 68 million people a day, or in other words one percent of the population (Lubin, and Badkar.) 68 million people poisoned every single day. This atrocity absolutely without doubt needs to be stopped.
In many ways, McDonald’s is the model business empire. All-American food, speedy service and a perceived value for money all go some way to explaining why the giant corporation continues to pack in diners to its restaurants every day. Nothing seems to dent the popularity of the mighty Big Mac, even under the pressure of harsh criticism that golden arch still stands tall. Somethings however you just can 't ignore on many different accounts very disgusting things have been found inside of different items on the menu. “Katherine Ortega bought a large order of nuggets from a Newport News McDonald’s and took them home to feed her kids, only to shake a deep-fried chicken head out of the box and onto the plate. That’s not white meat, obviously.”(K
Ask a teenager what their favorite fast food restaurant is and most of them will probably say McDonalds. "McDonalds operates approx. 30,000 restaurants on 6 continents, and feeds about 46 million people in a single day! In the U.S. alone, McDonalds accounts for 43% of the fast food market." Manhattan alone contains 82 restaurants packed into the island (Super Size Me). McDonalds has been criticized by the media and other people for offering too many unhealthy choices on their menu, therefore leading to obesity in America. Eating too much McDonalds, or any other fatty food, will give you many long term health problems.
There was little obesity data taken in the 1940s, so it's hard to tell what's the obesity rate on the American society. Nevertheless, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and prevention) in the 1950’s, 33% of Americans were overweight and 9,7% were obese. And 40 years later, the obesity rate rose to 30% in 1990 and 56% of people being overweight. This is a dramatic increase in a very short amount of time. Considering that McDonald’s was growing very rapidly in America over this time period it is very easy to associate that McDonald’s has had a direct impact with the obesity rate.
McDonald’s was the first company to try to export America’s fast food and changes in eating habits to other nations. McDonald’s has over
What we are eating when we choose fast food? Have you ever thought about where that chicken nugget came from? Up to 80,000 chickens can live in one windowless building. They can't move around, and are forced to live in small cages, stacked one on top of the other, which can lead them to go stir crazy. Because they have so many roommates and get bored, they decide to attack other chickens, and turn into cannibals. To make it easier to not lose 'valuable meat', the farmers will cut their beaks and toes off. Now imagine the immense amount of stress you would be under if you lived in these conditions, the chicken's immune systems get so weak they fill them with antibiotics, which of course we then ingest ourselves when eating that golden chicken nugget. Also, we should pay attention to what the animals are eating. The cattle industry buys millions of dead cats and dogs from animal shelters every year, and feeds them to the cattle which ends up in your big mac. Did I forget to mention that one burger could have meat from over 1,000 cows? If you ever look at the ingredients in a Big Mac, you would find between the meat, bun, and sauce, you would be digesting over 100 different ingredients, chemicals, coloring, etc. I don't know about you, but that sounds delicious to me.
“We need to teach our children to eat real food. No fast foods. No junk foods. No processed foods. Just honest, nutritious, real food.” As the years go by many more people are becoming obese because they consume too much fast food. People need to get in habits to cook at home rather than eating out everyday for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. People in this world are now always trying to look for the easy way out of things. Eating out at a fast food restaurant is not a healthy meal to eat. We the people need to avoid the fast food restaurants and stop being lazy and have home cooked meals everyday. Although fast food is convenient for everyone, it causes obesity and consuming too much fast food can lead to type 2 diabetes.
