WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT Civil Rights, American Federalism (Division of Powers), and Civil Liberties were three of the subject areas this semester that I found most interesting and informative (Krutz, Glen, Sylvie Waskiewicz, et al, American Government, OpenStax). Civil rights are the rights of individuals to receive equal treatment and to be free from unfair treatment or discrimination in a number of settings including education, employment, housing, and more based on certain legally protected characteristics. The proclamation that “all men are created equal” appears in the Declaration of Independence and the due process clause of the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution requires that the federal government treat people equally. Garcia fled Mexico with her parents in the early 1990’s in hopes of a better life. Due to President Trump’s executive order, Garcia was deported (www.cnn.com/2017/02/09/us/arizona-guadalupe-garcia-de-rayos-protests). Although Garcia did get into trouble after she was arrested for working illegally and falsifying documents, I don’t believe her intentions to be in America were bad. Some people believe that the community has the right to control issues of this sort, not so much the politicians. I know that many Americans think that all undocumented immigrants are “bad” or “dangerous” people and that is not so. Many families fled to this country for the sake of their children, to try and give them a better life, and as a parent of two small children I can totally relate and understand that aspect of it. In between the immigrants with good intentions there are many that don’t have great intentions.
