Converting into an adult is different for each person - for some it means living on your own, going to college, or getting a job - no matter what the situations are, becoming an adult means taking responsibility for your life. In other words, it means becoming a self-advocate; this encompasses taking responsibility for your actions and understanding how they affect the rest of the world. The transition from childhood to adulthood that I accept as true is when you obtain the competence of civic and financial literacy - comprehending your role in the community, responsibilities as a citizen, and management of money. I was taught that “driving is a privilege, not a right,” meaning I had to demonstrate my ability to drive safely on the road. I had always thought that receiving a license meant being able to socialize and revel with friends, but it spurred with a multitude of accountabilities - driving safely, obeying the traffic laws, and respecting the rights of other drivers. While on the road I have seen several accidents that made me realize I should handle vehicles with extreme caution and attention to detail, since they can cause extensive property damage, injury, and fatality. Additionally, it revealed civic literacy by making me understand that a role in the community and a responsibility as a citizen is to take accountability for my actions - passengers in the car put their safety in my hands and expect me to drive safe as well. Teens need to be taught that driving is a task that is complex and demanding. Parents know how much experience a young driver has, and they know exactly how inconvenient it is when they have to drive with their teen everywhere while they have their permit. Teens tend to cause most traffic accidents in adults’ eyes. They are not experienced yet, and often fail to pay attention to others on the road. They often think of a car as being some type of toy, but they do not know how powerful it really is. The driver education programs must be strengthened in order to make sure that students really have safer habits, behind the wheel experience, and by having a better understanding of all the laws on the road.

My relationship with literacy began when I started elementary school and that was the first starting point of my positive relationship with literacy. I really started to grow as a reader and writer throughout my middle school and high school years. Throughout my years of going to school I had many positive experiences that shaped my view of literacy today. My literacy skills have also enhanced throughout my educational years.
Adulthood has often been associated with independence. It serves as a turning point in life where one has to take responsibility for oneself and no longer being dependent on his or her family. Early adulthood, usually begins from late teens or early twenties and will last until the thirties (Santrock, 2013). Early adulthood revolves around changes and exploration while middle and late adulthood are more of stability. The transition from adolescence and adulthood differs among every individual. The onset of the transition is determined by many factors such as culture, family background, and the personality of the individual. Emerging adulthood (as cited in Santrock, 2014) is the term to describe the transition period from adolescence to adulthood.
Theater 180 addressed the quest question of how do people understand and engage in community life? Through this class I’ve gained a better understanding of what civic engagement is. At the start of this semester I had very minimal knowledge about civic engagement. As far as I knew civic engagement was just volunteering but nothing much beyond that. With this class I have learned that civic engagement is much more than just volunteer work.
Everyone that have ever lived to adulthood, understand that difficulty of the transition to it from childhood. As of right now, I am in the prime of the “coming of age “transition. The overwhelming pressure of our society that forces the adolescence to assimilate the social norms is felt by many. Just as in our first steps, our first words or anything that is expected in our human milestones, coming of age is one of them. It may variety from different societies, religious responsibility or modern legal convention; everyone had to reach this point eventually.
Getting a driver’s license can be the most exciting part of a teens life. But what do teens have to do beforehand in order to obtain that license? For some, it's months of training and for others, they can complete everything within a few months. But does all that training make teens better drivers? The three main reasons why more drivers education for teens is not beneficial are: restrictions for teen drivers make it harder on parents, teens have to be able to get around without their parents, and not all teens need more drivers education.

Driving a car and obtaining a driver’s license does perhaps seem to provide people with a great sense of independence and freedom. Teenagers need to feel independent in order to learn to become successful on their own as well as realize how to handle life situations on their own, and having a license seems the perfect start and most effective way to do so. When teenagers feel this independence they tend to act more mature, knowing the responsibilities they must now carry on their own (More4Kids). Teenagers often look forward to the freedom that driving offers as well. Teenagers are able to take drives to escape from life’s many stressed, and leave any troubles at home behind without rebelling out against their loved ones.
Childhood and adulthood are two different but equally important times in our lives. Childhood is the period of time when we are still growing up. Adulthood is the time in our life when we are grown up, though we may still be developing as people. Throughout the world, the beginning of adulthood is usually legally deemed to occur at a certain age, for instance, 18 or 21 years old. However, it can also be argued that we become adults as soon as we become independent, responsible for our own actions, and able to participate as a part society.

In their view, social issues are also important components, as well as linguistic competence and understanding cognitive processes in language studies. Freire (1974) views literacy not only as a process of knowledge transformation, but also as a relationship of learners to the world. Vygotsky (1978) suggests two stages of development at social and individual level. In his view, literacy is a phenomenon that is created, shared, and changed by the members of a society. Gee (1996) similarly argues that becoming literate means apprenticeship with texts and apprenticeships in particular ways of being. In summary, literacy practices are not just about language, but about their interrelation with social practices.
Teenagers get experience from receiving their driver’s license because they practice out on the road. Instead of waiting until the age of 18 to drive, teenagers get to familiarize themselves with the different, possible driving situations, rather than being inexperienced at 18. Teenagers get independence from receiving their driver’s license because they do not have to rely on their parents for transportation anymore. They are free to make plans of their own once they receive their driver’s license. Independence is an essential part of growing up to being a responsible adult. Some people say that teenagers should not receive their license at sixteen because they are not responsible, driving is dangerous, and they are more likely to become more distracted than adults. Although these are facts, they do not support the opposing argument. Driving is dangerous, but learning is not. Driving helps teenagers to become more responsible and with time driving also gives the driver experience; experience will reduce the willingness to be distracted while driving.
