Eastern Chipmunks
Chipmunks are very interesting animals. A chipmunk is a small cute animal that looks very similar to a squirrel. All chipmunks have stripes on their face and that is one way to tell whether it is a squirrel or a chipmunk. Depending on their species, they can be gray to reddish brown. It can weighanywhere from 28-142 grams and have the height of 4-7 inches. Its tail can be anywhere from 3-5 inches.
Many people call chipmunks by names like: Striped squirrel, Hackee, Ground squirrel and chipping squirrel. A female chipmunk is called a doe and the male is called a buck. Chipmunk reproduces sexually. The male tries to get a mate 2 times per year, spring and fall. Pregnancy lasts about 30 days. The chipmunk average litter size is 5 pups. The baby chipmunk is called a pup, kitten or kit. Baby chipmunks are born with no fur and their eyes closed. Their mother cares for them and feeds them milk for 2-3 months.
Chipmunks live in eastern USA and southeastern Canada. Chipmunks also live in forests and near homes in the suburban and rural areas. They live under rocks or logs, under decks or in gutters. They mostly live in holes called burrows and they pack food in it for winter. Many chipmunks have certain parts of their burrow or tunnel where they store food, give birth, and sleep. Chipmunks burrows are made up of a nest made of grass leaves and fluffy flower seeds and they usually make it right before they are about to give birth.
Chipmunks are omnivores meaning they eat both plants and animals. They eat berries, garden fruits, frogs, seeds, grains, mushrooms, small bugs and any kind of nuts. They crack some nuts by banging the nut against the ground. Chipmunks stuff them in pouches in their cheeks and bring them to th...
