What is child abuse? Child abuse is when a parent or caregiver, whether through act or fault to act, causes harm, death, emotional harm or risk of serious harm to a child. There are many forms of child abuse, including neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, mistreatment and emotional abuse. Every year, more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States alone. Those are the only ones that are on record, but how many more cases are there that Child Protected Services aren’t aware of. Physical abuse of a child is when a parent or caregiver causes any non-accidental physical injury to a child. There are many signs of physical abuse. Either it’s a family member or someone close to the family that the child or children know. As many as 93% of victims under the age of 18 know the abuser. A perpetrator really doesn’t have to be an adult. They can have any connection to the child involving an older sibling or neighbor family member, a teacher, the list could go on and on. Abuse is the result of offensive behavior that takes advantage of a child’s weakness and is in no way related to the sexual orientation of the abusive person.”

Abusers can influence their preys to stay quiet about the sexual abuse. The abuser uses a number of different maneuvers. Often an abuser will use their power over the victim to intimidate the child. They might tell the child that what they are doing is ok. An abuser may make threats if the child refuses to participate or plans to tell another adult. Children sexual abuse is not only a physical violation; it is a violation of trust and/or authority. Child sexual abuse is bigger than most people realize. Often a hurtful experience for children and teens, child sexual abuse is a criminal offense punishable by law in many societies. Child sexual abuse includes:
• any sexual act between an adult and a minor, or between two minors, when one exerts power over the
