Study of the Nuclear Disaster of Chernobyl The worst accident in the history of this nuclear power generation occurred on the morning of April 26, 1986. It was at the Chernobyl (Ukraine) nuclear power station in the Soviet Union. At 1:32AM Lieutenant Colonel Leonid Telyatnikov received a telephone call and was told that there was a fire at the nuclear power plant. There were many reasons their plant had backfired. These reasons included human error and poor plant design due to the cold war. Chernobyl was located in the former Soviet Union in what is now Ukraine. The area in and around Chernobyl is now a nuclear wasteland. People are not supposed to live in these areas, yet they still do, even with the danger of mutations and radiation sickness. For the people and countries affected by the radiation, this was a horrible, terrifying and angering experience. Villages were evacuated late and not many things were done in time to save lives and prevent more damages. Countless errors were made at Chernobyl. The man in charge, an electrical engineer, was not a specialist in reactor plants. There were also the problems with the plant's organization and design. Due to the cold war, the Soviet Union had poor designs for nuclear plants. The sequence of events before the explosion is still unclear. Technicians attempted a poorly designed experiment, causing the chain reaction in the core to go out of control. The reactor's lid was blown off, and large amounts of radioactive material were released into the atmosphere. A partial meltdown of the core also occurred. It is believed that for some strange reason, there was a loss of water that was used to cool 1,661 uranium fuel assemblies that were set in pressure pipes surrounded by 1,700 tons... ... middle of paper ... ...s demonstrated at Chernobyl. Greenpeace spoke out against it with a powerful quote, “Chernobyl is a time bomb: every day that this reactor operates it becomes more dangerous", said Tobias Muenchmeyer, Greenpeace nuclear expert. To avoid further accidents, people that work at nuclear plants should be careful with what they do. The government should also have the ability to step in and shut down a plant that is unstable and poses a problem to the community. For the good of out world, workers should be supervised more carefully and all leaks and problems should be reported to a higher authority. The public should also be warned because if they know that they live around an unstable power plant, they will take precautions and perhaps move to a safer area.
Every since the industrial revolution, society has moved to jobs, factories, manufacturing goods and products, and larger cities. This process called industrialization is when an economy modifies its way of living from an agriculture based living to the production of merchandise in factories. The engineers in Visit Sunny Chernobyl created a new frontier past the safety zone because they want to test the limits of the reactor. What the scientists didn’t account for is that fact that the reactors already had the potential of a dangerous chain reaction. The series of events that occurred on April 26th, 1986 at the Chernobyl Power Plant located in the Ukraine, would be considered one of the worst disasters that the world would ever see. It was supposed to be a routine check “to determine how long the steam-driven turbines at the plant would continue to generate electricity in the event of an electrical blackout” (Worsnop). This seems ironic because a simple test led to such a complicated calamity. During the test, one of the turbines was shut off and the emergency core cooling system was turned off as well. For a simple test, turning off the emergency core cooling system all together might not have one of the best options. They were running the core at low power and by doing so it caused excess xenon to accumulate. By reducing the water flow to the core, the core stared to heat up rapidly causing the reactor power to increase. In the early morning of March 28th 1979, the nuclear plant located on Three Mile Island in southeastern Pennsylvania was operating as usual. The plant itself had been operating for nearly a decade without incident. Around 4pm, a mechanical failure within the cooling system of the reactor occurred. This failure resulted in cooling water failing to flow adequately to cool the reactor. This resulted in the cooling water to be heated beyond safe operating limits of the process. As the cooling water heated, some of the liquid was converted to steam that increased the pressure within unit. Operators in the plant realized that cooling system had failed and began taking steps to protect the reactor and safely shut it down. The Chernobyl catastrophe was a nuclear setback that happened at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in on April 26, 1986. It is seen as the most recognizable terrible nuclear power plant cataclysm ever. A nuclear crisis in one of the reactors caused a fire that sent a cluster of radioactive consequence that on the long run spread all over Europe.

On April 26th, 1986, one of four nuclear reactors located in the Soviet Union melted down and contaminated a vast area of Eastern Europe. The meltdown, a result of human error, lapsed safety precautions, and lack of a containment vessel, was barely contained by dropping sand and releasing huge amounts of deadly radioactive isotopes into the atmosphere. The resulting contamination killed or injured hundreds of thousands of people and devastated the environment. Plutonium’s properties were unknown, and scientists knew very little about uranium 235. World Health Association (2013) reports that during the accident, one person died immediately and another one died in the hospital due to the harmful injuries he received. Health World Organization (WHO) (2006) also reports that a few weeks after the disaster 28 people died because of the Acute Radiation Sickness(ARS). The basic fuel for a nuclear power plant is uranium. The reactor core is what contains the radioactive material in a nuclear power plant. This radioactive material will continue to give off heat for a long time, and unless this heat is removed, it will build up and will eventually cause damage to the radioactive fuel or the reactor. The nuclear reactor coolant, as described above, consists of water, gas, or a liquid metal. This coolant is circulated through the reactor core and absorbs the heat that is generated and turns it into steam. This steam becomes pressurized and causes the turbines to turn along with the generator, which generates electricity. Figure 1 shows the flow of the coolant (in this case, water) indicated by the arrows and the color of the water represents the waters form. One of the most significant environmentally damaging instances in history was the Chernobyl incident. In 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant in Ukraine exploded. It became one of the most significant disasters in the engineering community. There are different factors that contributed to the disaster. The personnel that were tasked with operating the plant were unqualified. The plant’s design was a complex one. The RBMK reactor was Soviet design, and the staff had not be acquainted with this particular design. As the operators performed tests on the reactor, they disabled the automatic shutdown mechanism. After the test, the attempt to shut down the reactor was unsuccessful as it was unstable. This is the immediate cause of the Chernobyl Accident. The energy industry is beginning to change. In today’s modern world, governments across the globe are shifting their focuses from traditional sources of power, like the burning coal and oil, to the more complex and scientific nuclear power supply. This relatively new system uses powerful fuel sources and produces little to no emissions while outputting enough energy to fulfill the world’s power needs (Community Science, n.d.). But while nuclear power seems to be a perfect energy source, no power production system is without faults, and nuclear reactors are no exception, with their flaws manifesting in the form of safety. Nuclear reactors employ complex systems involving pressure and heat. If any of these systems dysfunctions, the reactor can leak or even explode releasing tons of highly radioactive elements into the environment. Anyone who works at or near a nuclear reactor is constantly in danger of being exposed to a nuclear incident similar to the ones that occurred at the Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi plants. These major accidents along with the unresolved problems with the design and function of nuclear reactors, as well as the economic and health issues that nuclear reactors present serve to show that nuclear energy sources are not worth the service that they provide and are too dangerous to routinely use.
