Three Mile Island Incident The history of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant began in 1968 with the construction of Unit 1 Reactor. Unit 2 Reactor went under construction the following year. Unit 1 was up and running in 1974 and four years later in 1978 Unit 2 was put into business. Unit 2 was practically new when a nuclear accident took place and ended the nuclear power production of TMI-2. March 28, 1979 at 4:00 A.M., a malfunction in the electrical or mechanical components in the nonnuclear side of TMI-2 started the Three Mile Island Incident. The airport reported that there were visual meteorological conditions that existed prior to the planes departure. The pilot had filed a proper visual flight rules (VFR) flight plane prior to his departure. The investigation that followed performed by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) had determined that instrument conditions existed in the area of the crash site.

The government said the sheep died from the pesticides they sprayed to protect their crops.
