Biomagnification refers to the increase in concentration of certain chemicals known as pollutants from one link in a food chain to another. Biomagnification leads to ecotoxicological problems, especially for top carnivore predators at the summit of the ecological food web, who ingest the toxic accumulated prey.
Causes of the Problem
Anthropogenic activities, such as over using of chemical pesticides on agriculture land or directly on water. Heavy metals, such as mercury, emitted to the atmosphere from factories, deposits into rivers and metal pipes, which are connected to rivers, dissolve over time. These pollutants then enter the food chain.
Biomagnified Pollutants
Biomagnified pollutants become more concentrated as they move up the food chain, becoming much more intensified at higher levels of the food chain than they are towards the bottom. They are soluble in fats, long-lived, mobile and biologically active, retaining in tissues for a long time. Below is a table of information of some common biomagnified pollutants.

By the name of “superspecies” we try to change the world feature and control the nature with science. With science, a lot of technology has been invented to support people demand for products. Without anticipation about the bad consequences, sometime the invention is causing more damaged than it provide in later on. In 1930, DDT that use for killing insect was discovered by Paul Mueller, working for the chemical company Geigy in Switzerland. For this reason, the benefits of using DDT became immediately obvious (65). Years letter, the unbelievable side effect of using DDT was found. While Biologists investigated the decline of eagles and hawks, they discovered the hitherto phenomenon of “biomagnification”, which compounds gather as they are ingested up the food chain (67). DDT phenomenon proves that thinking like science is only to understand the world in separate pieces. It is lack of understanding the rhythms, patterns and cycles of the nature. Therefore, we need to think beyond the science to see the connections between us and nature because in the reality this world is the world of

One of the most common American proverbs is the expression to “never judge a book by its cover”. This saying, used for more than just books, is commonly used to express that what is on the appearance of something might not always show that things true nature or content. Even so people will often forget this fact and rely on their own perception. So what does this say about perception? To Victor Hugo author of the novel Les Misérables this would probable show that human perception is flawed and that people trust it more than they should. In Victor Hugo’s novel Les Misérables he suggests that by following only our perception will not always lead to the truth, with the characters of Thénardier, Jean Valjean, and Inspecter Javert.
Rachel Carson’s use of the of the term ‘biocides’ signifies the whole rhetoric of her book. These so-called pesticides and herbicides are not merely killing herbs and insects as their names suggest, but rather they are committing murder against the whole biological spectrum on earth. We should call them as they are, biocides. Biocides that are harming each and every single living creature on this planet of ours, leading to their elimination. From humans and mammals, reptiles, fish and amphibians, to the tiny ants and bees, we are all being killed slowly on different rates. All eventually reaching a mutual doom, which is the destiny of the whole biological phenomena if one succumbs. That is due to interdependence and interconnectedness of all living species on
Today pollution is very high in both inland and marine waters. All different types of water pollution are contributing factors in this problem. Here are some things that are associated with pollution: Pathogens: Pathogens are disease causing bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. They usually come from human sewage. As pathogen numbers increase, so does the risk of human health.
The word “remediate” means to solve a problem, so the word “bioremediation” refers to the use of biological organisms to solve an environmental problem. Bacteria, fungi, protists and other microorganisms in a non-polluted environment are constantly breaking down organic matter, and when the soil is polluted, some of the organisms may die, but others will still be able to break down the pollutants. Bioremediation provides organisms that can consume the pollutants with fertilizer, oxygen, and other conditions to encourage the rapid growth of these organisms. They then would be able to break down the organic pollutants at a correspondingly faster rate. There are two general ways in which bioremediation functions. One way is where specific survival conditions of a microorganism living in the soil are enhanced to increase the rate of a pollutant’s degradation. The second way is when specialized microbes are added to degrade the contaminant. This way is less common. For many types of polluted soil, bioremediation provides an excellent method of clean-up, but in some cases the pollutant is toxic even for the microbes. These pollutants include metals such as cadmium or lead, and salts such as sodium chloride. Although it may not work in all cases, bioremediation is considerably easier than other methods because it enhances the functions that the microbes already carry out in the soil. Along with being easier, it can be much less expensive because the soil does not have to be pumped out of the ground for treatment (Environmental Inquiry-Bioremediation). Serratia Marcescens is a bacterium that is commonly used for bioremediation.
Pollution is causing the destruction of environments and habits resulting in many adverse affects. The types of environments that are heavily damaged by pollution is normally freshwater ones. Polluting factors such as untreated sewage, mining waste, acid rain, fertilizers and pesticides
CHEMICHALS: Scientist have defined hundreds of chemicals that can cause cancer in animals. These chemicals are also a cancer hazard for human beings if they become widespread in food supply, the general environment, or the living and working environment. In most cases, a chemical carcinogen enters the food supply as a food addi...
According to World WildLife Fund, many ecosystems around the world are being destroyed, eliminating many plant and animal species that inhabit them (“Pollution”).
The most prevalent source of agricultural water pollution is soil that is washed off of fields. These fields have been treated with fertilizers and pesticides, which over time have accumulated heavy metals that are then transferred to lakes and streams. The excess particles cloud the water blocking vital oxygen and sun for the aquatic plants.

Bioindicator’s are different types of living organisms that responds to different types of effect in the human environment. Lichens are a special type of Bioindicator that are used for air pollution. One main type of pollution is the sulfur-oxide pollution, which they get their personal needs from the atmosphere rather than from the soil in the ground. The lichens also react to the air pollution all- year round rather than a few months at a time. Lichens are also inexpensive to use for evaluating the air pollution. Lichens can also be used for some other things that different organisms can’t be used for. Lichens are closely associated with two very different organisms’ called alga and fungus. They all live in a symbiotic association. Lichens have special abilities that help them survive during extreme temperatures and extreme sources of moisture. Lichens have 3 different types of growth form: crusty which the edges are flat and hard to remove, leafy which the top and the bottom layers are different, then lastly you have the shrubby kind which is kind of similar to the Spanish moss when it’s hanging downwards. Lichens are widely use as environmental indicators and Bioindicator. Just say that the air is badly polluted with the sulfur dioxide then there possibly wouldn’t be any lichens being presented in the atmosphere. If the air is clean then the lichens would become more abundant. Some lichen species can handle some high levels of pollution and some are mostly found on pavement, walls and tree bark in urban areas. Lichens can be sensitive in certain areas; the most sensitive lichen is shrubby and leafy. Some lichens absorb the sulfur dioxide dissolved in water. These lichen species have very l...
Phytovolatization is the uptake and vaporization of pollutants by a plant. This mechanism takes a solid or liquid contaminant and transforms it to an airborne vapor. The vapor can either be the pure pollutant, or the plant can metabolize the pollutant before it is vaporized, as in the case of mercury, lead and selenium (Boyajian and Carriera, 1997; Black, 1995; Wantanbe, 1997).
Everyday, alarming amounts of toxins are released into the atmosphere. Over the recent years global climate change, better known as “global warming” has become a worldwide problem facing our planet, and as the world becomes continuously warmer, the effects that climate change will pose to our planet and to the people who live on this earth, will be detrimental.
Pollutants are the key elements of pollution, which are generally waste materials of dissimilar forms. Pollution disturbs our ecosystem and the balance of the environment. With innovation and development in our lives pollution has reached its peaks giving rise to global warming and human illness. When raw materials, water, energy and other resources are utilized more efficiently, when fewer harmful substances are substituted for hazardous ones, and when lethal substances are eliminated from the production process. Water pollution is also a major problem in the world because almost 60% of it is fish.
