Apple cider as a health drink has been gaining popularity. It is believed to provide a number of health benefits, including lowering blood sugar levels and lowering cholesterol. However, it is most popularly linked with weight loss.

First of all, how is apple cider vinegar made? To produce this vinegar, apple juice is slowly fermented using a bacteria called "Mother of Vinegar" and yeast. These break down the fruit's sugars to acetic acid, giving the vinegar a sour taste. The resulting product is often used in salad dressings as well as marinades.

Some studies claim that it is the acetic acid in apple cider vinegar that helps a person lose weight. It increases AMPK, an enzyme that scientists believe increase fat burning while decreasing fat and sugar production.

In another study, it was revealed that people who consumed a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in water exhibited lower glucose levels.

The vinegar is most commonly consumed by mixing it with a glass of water and then drinking the mixture. According to health information website Healthline, one may reap the full benefits of weight loss by taking one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar a day, preferably spread out into two to three doses before meals.

However, not all experts are convinced that apple cider vinegar aids in weight loss. In spite of other studies, they claim that there is very little evidence to prove that it actually helps to burn fat and promote weight loss. Health expert Katherine Zeratsky of the Mayo Clinic believes that the apple cider vinegar isn't likely to help a person lose weight.

A 2014 review finds that even though some evidence suggests that vinegars can help with obesity and hyperglycemia, evidence is still lacking to prove that it positively affects metabolism.

On the other hand, a 2016 study done on rats suggested an improvement in satiation, cholesterol and blood sugar following apple cider vinegar intake.
