In Animal Farm, George Orwell portrays the Russian Revolution through the characters of the novel. Most of these characters and events reflect what has occured during 1917. Orwell writes his own views of the government controlling society. The government promises thousands of people about something that is not completely true, like the novel. Overall, Orwell describes how the government has total and complete power of societies thoughts and actions.
Many characters in the novel are parallel to the ones in the Russian Revolution. The pigs symbolize a government as shown, “The pigs did not actually work, they directed and supervised the others.” (Orwell, 27) In addition, they made the seven commandments and named the Animal Farm. Stalin banishes Trotsky the same way that Napoleon did. Stalin and Napoleon took power into their own hand and took over the reign. Though they had the power to do as they say, Napoleon had a trustworthy public relations man, Squealer. Squealer lies to the other animals, stating that “We pigs are brainworkers. The whole management and organization of this farm depend on us.” (Orwell, 36) By stating this, Squealer is proving to the others that anything that Napoleon does or needs, is for the benefit of the animals, not just the pigs. In reality, Squealer is helping Napoleon get away with anything. Furthermore, Squealer also takes action by saying, “Do not imagine, comrades, that leadership is a pleasure! On the contrary, it is a deep and heavy responsibility.” (Orwell, 55) By saying this, Squealer makes it seem like having power and authority over people is hard work and dreadful. Meanwhile the working class works for hours nonstop and has barely enough food to fill them up, Napoleon has plenty of food, sleeps in beds, and drinks whiskey. Consequently, this leads to the death of many animals of the farm. Napoleon's power is only benefiting the pigs. In fact, Napoleon is acting like the selfish human being that Mr. Jones
