Literature usually contains isolation as an excuse for tragedy and hopelessness. Isolation and death are given in "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner and "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley. Both of these books show how people such as Emily and Frankenstein suffer from silence, which leads to their downfall and soon later death. The point of this essay is to get more into the book and people by looking at their loneliness throughout their story and the effects it has. We can start to feel the hurt, isolation, and just feeling better alone by looking at the experiences that they had. Emily, the girl in "A Rose for Emily," finds herself stuck in isolation. They put into detail how things can be mentally draining and even though they could get better, as a person we are the ones to choose if they get worse. Frankenstein was not charismatic, instead he was manipulative to himself and decided to take his own path in life. Which ended up getting him stuck in a bad situation that he never knew would happen. Being focused on himself he thought that he was powerful and by isolating himself from society nobody could get to his level. He chose the wrong path and not only hurt himself in the end but also affected many others by leaving their lives. It probably had a big effect on his family because going a long period of time without talking to or seeing someone so close to you can really hurt. Emily is a great example of this because she didn’t comprehend or accept her father’s death until three days later. Even though he was controlling and a very gloomy person overall, he was still her father and it is hard to accept the cold truth. Not only was her father a gloomy person alive, but his presence after death was also known to be very controlling.
