Soon after Russell graduated from the university in 1918, he made an attempt to become to fight with the Navy. Four years after Russell became a representative for Georgia, he became Georgia’s Speaker of the

William Anderson presents a well-written history of the rise and fall of a Georgia demagogue, Eugene Talmadge. Anderson's narrative provides insight into Talmadge's popular support and how he orchestrated the perception of being a "man of the people." He also has a smooth flowing writing style that keeps the story moving and the reader interested in following along.

Joseph J. Ellis is an American historian, and professor on the founding period of the United States. He is also the author of seven books including, “American Sphinx” and “Founding Brothers”. Both of which have won him a National Book Award and a Pulitzer Prize, in respecting order. His book, Founding Brothers, was written for the general audience, more so students, scholars and anyone else interested in learning about how this country was constructed by our Founding Fathers. Ellis explores the great efforts each and every one of them put forth into this country. This book is a monographed oral history, because it is about one subject (the post-revolutionary time period of the United States) and it is of a sequence of events that occur in that certain time period. Ellis’ book is about a series of history events
III. After reading this journey of a man who was born in North Carolina, raised in Tennessee, and became a statesman for both Mississippi and Alabama, I honestly believe I have learned a lot about a great and knowledgeable man. Before reading this book, I had no wisdom of this man nor his accomplishments. I had no previously knowledge of George Strother Gaines

Turning Point by Jimmy Carter provides a look into his first experience with politics as he ran for the Georgia state senate in 1962. He believed it was possible to change the direction his home state was headed, specifically focusing on education. Instead of having a run-of-the-mill experience in democracy, he faced election corruption by those in power and legal challenges up until the moment he was finally sworn in as state senator. The Supreme Court case of Baker v. Carr established what was known as the “one man, one vote” rule, where all votes were ruled to carry equal weight in elections. In Georgia, Carter benefited from the decisions that were handed down in the case.
Although the comparisons are well hidden, both today’s society and the story ‘Harrison Bergeron’ share similar qualities. They both deal with equality, which leads to problems and consequences. A second similarity is the struggle of competition and trying to prevent it from occurring, which also leads to problems. Lastly, both struggle with normality, and the fact that it’s hard to accept that different is okay now.

“Originally published in 2006, Mississippi Politics quickly became the definitive work on the state’s political history, campaigns, legislative battles, and litigation, as well as how Mississippi shaped and was shaped by national and regional trends.” While the second edition of the book still shows Mississippi’s gradual change from a blue state to a red state, it also examines the aftermath of Haley Barbour’s re-election campaign in 2007 along with the 2008 presidential elections. The one thing that I found most interesting about this book has nothing to do with its contents but everything to do with the two authors Jere Nash and Andy Taggart. Jere Nash is a well known Democrat who has held many political positions including chief of staff for former Governor Ray Mabus who is also a Democrat. Andy Taggart is a Republican who, like Nash, held several positions including chief of staff for former Republican Governor Kirk Fordice. The fact that they worked well enough together to write a book on Mississippi politics leads me to believe two things. First, I believe that this book is an accurate account of the history of Mississippi politics because it was written by two men who are members of different political parties. Second, I believe that if Nash and Taggart can work together to produce something great, the Democratic and Republican parties of Mississippi can as well.

For a long time, the structure of Maine’s power seemed to weigh heavily in favor of the people, rather than the governor or any single individual. In the 1970s to the late 1980s the state saw a rapid increase of public service programs which revolved around education, and environmental protection measures. Although this seems like it would be a positive step for the state, the increased activity in the state led to an explosion in Maine’s budget. This led many people to beg the question as to who was truly running the government, the people, or big institutions such as Central Maine Power, or Central Maine Railroad. The state also struggled with for a long period of time with its legislative branch, which had a much less smoother transition from loosely organized institutions to a professionally managed government. Maine’s legislature is far more bureaucratized than the other two branches, and many legislatures still blame the term limits law passed in 1996 for their inability to actually address real issues in the state because they’re more concerned with their re-election rather than the welfare of the
