Love can exist in many forms; however, there is one manifestation of love that seems to have fascinated humanity since the dawn of history. This is the love that two people share when they “fall in love”- the love that is now more frequently described as passionate or romantic love. In this sense, love has a special place in human affair. It has always been a universal preoccupation. It may be that lovers’ madness is part of the human condition. The connection between love and states of illness and madness has existed since antiquity. In fact, love is an illness that leads to many psychological and physical disorders.

First of all, the mind is the first victim of love. The main function of the mind is to control the body, feelings and thoughts. Disorders in the mind can cause serious mental conditions ranging from depression to suicide. Therefore, love puts people at greater risk of fear, anger and in extreme cases, death.

According to the principles of Hippocratic medicine passionate love almost invariably turns into ‘love melancholy’ - a form of depression. Moreover, anybody who has experienced falling in love will know something of love’s illness- an emotional roller coaster that seems to carry the occupant between the two extremes of heaven and hell (Paul, 1993, p. 91). Even a superficial examination of artistic works on the theme of love will reveal a striking duality. Love is rarely described as a wholly pleasant experience. As a conclusion, love is unique among those mental states. Although we celebrate love, we also recognize it can resemble an illness. Thus, the word love is complemented by love sickness. There is equivalent construction that relates to any other positive mental state. Poets experience a sickness as a consequence of the absence of their lovers. Also, psychiatry recognizes abnormally elevated mood in the form of mania. Lovesickness and the anguish of rejection, however, can lead to anguish and real suffering—both mental and physical. If love is a sickness then perhaps it has a cure. However, the wounds of love are cured by only by those who made them.
