“1984” by George Orwell was a book banned because its constant references to sex, it was also accused of promoting the belief of communism. In my opinion, “1984” should not be banned in schools because our today’s society have different standards than the society when the releasing of the novel reason being when the releasing of the novel people thought the novel promoted communism because the rise of communistic belief while in today’s communist belief isn’t a problem.
The main topic in the book is life in a dictatorship government, are still a crude reality around the globe. Dictators take control and are thrown out too. When this book was published, some people thought it was promoting totalitarian governments; but the truth is that this original novel

Well, those people should take a look into reality. Surely, 1984’s sexual content includes parts such as the moment when Julia, referring to sex in page 105, says: “I adore it” or when Winston tells Julia in page 101: “I wanted to rape you and then murder you afterwards;” but it never goes as far to be considered an erotic novel, the book only describes the foreplay before the act and skips right into the characters falling asleep. This might have been scandalous by the time this book came out, but those were much more conservative days. Even more, while there should be a certain age, which should not read the book, educators are the ones that should evaluate whether their students are mature enough for this novel.
To sum up, “1984” is a book written in the past, in an age where it was needed, and now, we can still learn from Winston’s story, it might have been a bit controversial when it was published, but such good piece of literature which central message will never die out should never be banned, especially in schools. As long as this book is taken with maturity, it is a great window into a crude reality we need to escape
Have you ever read a book or an article in a magazine that you wouldn’t want your children to read? “A banned book is one that has been censored by an authority—a government, a library, or a school system. A book that has been banned is actually removed from a library or school system.” (Brogan Brunner)Some reasons people want books to be banned is because they have profanity, racism, murder, and sexism. Some reasons people don’t want books to be banned is because of the first amendment which is freedom of press and speech. They also think people should be able to read what they want. Some issues in Of Mice and Men are it has racial slurs and racism. It has a lot of profanity which some people don’t like to read and murder with euthanasia. Overall of mice and men should be banned from the schools.
Not only that, but 1984 should not be banned because it helps us explore our imaginations and maximizing the ability to do so. Although the story is fairly realistic, it is exaggerated to the extremes in terms of breaking down society and reshaping it to Big Brothers desires, “We convert him, we capture his inner mind, we reshape him. We burn all evil and all illusion out of him; we bring him over to our side, not in appearance, but genuinely, heart and soul.” (Orwell, 321). To add on, in the event that Big Brother is unable to brainwash their citizens such as Winston Smith they would then turn to the last resort, Room 101 where one’s worst fear can be found, “The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world.” (Orwell,
Banning a book on the basis of profanity is merely a superficial reason of those who wish to limit beliefs that do not coincide with their own. By excluding a novel from a high school curriculum in order to shelter students from profanity, is an attempt to do the impossible. Profanity is found everywhere. According to TV Guide, "Profanity is uttered once every six minutes on American primetime television...
the book included considerable profanity and "filthy and profane" language that premoted premarital sex, homosexuality, and perversion, as
To ban a book means to prohibit educational facilities from accessing or selling the book due to the inappropriate context or misleading moral values. A book can be banned or challenged by including explicit scenes, words, or context. People tend to ban books based off of their perception of what “dangerous thoughts” may occur within the work. (Brown) For example, the famous nursery rhyme, Mother Goose, has been banned in multiple locations because she “lives in a shoe with her brood.” (Brown) Flowers for Algernon was banned in Emporium, PA; Oberlin, OH; Glen Rose, AR; Glenrock, WY; and Plant City, FL due to sexually explicit passages and language. I do not agree that the novel should be banned or challenged based on these allegations.
George Orwell is one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century. 1984 is a story about the world George Orwell envisioned in the future. This futuristic world is a dystopia where the government controlled every aspect of a person’s life. In the novel1984, the main character a thirty-four year old named Winston. Winston is a rebel at heart but he does that realize it. As the story progresses Winston goes through many changes in his life. Orwell’s main character Winston became a reckless rebellious manwho no longer wrote diaries but began living his fantasies in real life. Winston’s first major change that he went from being a scared oppressed man to a brave relentless rebel. His second majorchange was that hewas no longer aware of his surroundings; he became reckless. Winston changes from being very cautious man to a careless man. Winston’s third change was that he no longer wrote in his diary but began to live it in his every day life.
The constant theme of betrayal in 1984 is being used by George Orwell to show how hopeless Winston’s struggle against the Totalitarian system is, giving the reader an idea of how bad this type of government is. The reader is introduced to this dark time and given hope in the form of the rebellious protagonist, Winston. However, the reader soon realises how hopelessly alone Winston is in his silent battle when they see that the government is against him, he has no support or allies, and that even his own mind can be turned against him. The message is clear and makes readers who live in a democracy happier with what they have.
In the novel 1984, Orwell produced a social critique on totalitarianism and a future dystopia that made the world pause and think about our past, present and future. When reading this novel we all must take the time to think of the possibility that Orwell's world could come to pass. Orwell presents the concepts of power, marginalization, and resistance through physical, psychological, sexual and political control of the people of Oceania. The reader experiences the emotional ride through the eyes of Winston Smith, who was born into the oppressive life under the rule of Ingsoc. Readers are encouraged through Winston to adopt a negative opinion on the idea of communist rule and the inherent dangers of totalitarianism. The psychological manipulation and physical control are explored through Winston's journey, and with Winston's resistance and ultimate downfall, the reader is able to fully appreciate O'Briens reasoning, "Power is not a means, it is an end."
In this book there is some content that might be inappropriate for again some ages. The point of this book is not to teach the reader about the human body or childbirth, but to help the reader understand how Jonas (The Main Character) is feeling for the first time and to let them know how things work in the community they live in. I can see the point of view of the parents and I would be the same way with my child. All though is it really worth it to take this book to being sexually explicit. It is a book written for the entertainment of others; not for these inappropriate teachings.
The exposure to sexual content and nature can cause an influence on young children and even adolescents. In some cases, this can also lead to a different exposure to these sexual natures, including some that are harmful to not just the ones who suffer, but the ones who see it. In tv, movies, media almost everywhere this content is normalized, but should this content be found in a book where it can lead to bad influences? These bad influences like rape, abuse, and more can be found in some books, giving impressions that these actions are normal. For example, A Streetcar Named Desire is a work that shows these acts and they are very heavily used to . Although the heavy use of impressionable sexual content is used and can be questioned, A Streetcar
The novel “1984” is a story about people striving for a utopian society. This fictional world depicts a hopeless and nightmarish state. The main character Winston is a meaningless member in the party, the party uses a totalitarian authority to enforce perfect conformity amongst its members. In 2017 there are many similarities and differences between the book and today’s society. George Orwell might have wrote “1984” in the 1940’s but, he may not have been far off from predicting the truth in 2017.
“The Miseducation Of Cameron Post” has caused a school district to ban the book due to its major profanity. Though many think freshman students should not read it, many think otherwise. Parents have complained that it’s too “gay” and uses too much words that a freshman shouldn’t know, but they don’t realize that they might have already learned many other “bad” things in today’s world. Maybe some parents should worry about who their children’s friends are, the movies they’re watching, or how easily they can get their hands on that book. In my opinion, I think it's the students choice to read what they want. High school is a time when kids find out who they are and start growing more independently.
First, 1984 should not be banned from the school library because it teaches the horrors of a totalitarian society. Some may argue that 1984 is a pro communistic and totalitarian book, but it is easy to see that it is the opposite by how the book portrays the totalitarian society negatively.
Books are banned to protect the readers and to do so, some books are even banned because of the smallest detail it contains. The reasons why books are banned is “because of political, religious, sexual, and social reasons” (Karolides, Bald, and Sova vii). Also, people’s beliefs are a reason why some books are banned now. Some books may contradict and offend a person’s belief which causes a certain book to be banned or censored. For example, it is obvious why books are censored or banned if it contained sexual content because it would create a negative mind-set for the high school students making them think that sexual content is no big deal. It would also...
...by the school board and library, as well as teachers that have their overall judgment on what can be appropriate, interesting, engaging and useful for the students, and that controversial issues are not something to be afraid of, but instead, a useful learning tool that will prepare children not only for college, but for life as well. Students are a lot more mature than they are given credit for, and when a material that involves subjects such as language or violence is introduced well to a class by the teacher, the class will be interested and motivated to discuss maturely, and not be impressed by the subject or start acting out of influence by it. If we ban every book that deals with considered “explicit,” or “uncomfortable” content, then we are denying students a great opportunity of being informed on real issues, and forming their own ideas of right and wrong.
