Final Copy The Giver; Banned? Books are being banned in our schools and libraries all over our country. The book I am doing this research paper on is The Giver; I have read The Giver several times and enjoyed the book each time. All though the book has been banned in Texas, Massachusetts, Washington and many more states, but Texas has completely tried to rid the book from the entire state. The book has been challenged for many accurate and some inaccurate reasons; three in which are violence, sexual content, and offensive language. I believe The Giver should be banned for certain age groups such as 5-12, but for the more aged and mature readers the book should not be banned. One reason the book is banned is because of violence; this reason …show more content…
is at the top of the list for why this book is banned. From reading the book the only “serious” or “real” violence in the story is injecting a needle into someone to kill them. There may have been a few punches and slaps, but I don't consider that hardcore violence. The only reason this was part of the banning is because of the younger kids. Truthfully, some of the violence in this book may impact younger kids and the parents do not want their child reading a book containing this. Another reason towards the banning of the book is the sexual content.
In this book there is some content that might be inappropriate for again some ages. The point of this book is not to teach the reader about the human body or childbirth, but to help the reader understand how Jonas (The Main Character) is feeling for the first time and to let them know how things work in the community they live in. I can see the point of view of the parents and I would be the same way with my child. All though is it really worth it to take this book to being sexually explicit. It is a book written for the entertainment of others; not for these inappropriate teachings. The last reason is the offensive language in the book. When reading the book for myself, I found no language that offended me whatsoever. This reason is different because it affects different people. The book may offend people based on the author or their religion. I can see different point of views of people, but it is not my place to say who is right or wrong. In my opinion, if the book you're reading “offends” you don't read it, drop it and leave it alone. In conclusion, I believe this book should not be banned. With the book being violent, sexually explicit, and having offensive language; that is not the point of this book. The point is to entertain with a story, not to teach you content or to offend you. I believe some people are just too sensitive to these kind of things and just want attention. Does banning this book
solve anything; no, it really doesn't.
For younger readers this book carries very strong language but it has a strong message. One of those is that it shows what students will do for drugs. While researching the book you discover that in South Carolina, Berkley County school district, was one of the first to pull the book from schools and libraries. This occurred after a mom protested the book when her 8th grade daughter had to read little experts from the book to her classmates. The students mother did not want her to be reading a book with so much profanity and references to sex. One of the most controversial lines that comes from the book is when Alice writes in her journal “Another day, another blow-job”. She doe...
The novel the outsiders should be banned because it has violence things that happens in the novel. “But dally, heaters kill people’’,kill em with switchblades to, dontcha?” This quote states that the characters in the book are really dangerous. All this violence should not be told to kids, teens.
People ban books for dumb reasons that make absolutely no sense. Another is dumb religious reasons. Ministers and educators challenged it (it being the wonderful wizard of oz) for its “ungodly” influence and for depicting women in strong leadership roles They banned the wizard of oz because it showed girls in a leadership role (what?).This is really important because they are banning a classic book because the princess was a thing that people got really people got upset with it. “Others accuse the novel of attacks on religion, the disabled and women.” Lord of the flies (“http://www.banned-books.org.uk/sections/corrosive”). Once again PC police have come again to shut down another book that is actually pretty good. Also once again imagination is not encouraged. Don’t ban books for religious reasons that are not valid. Finally racism (that is not racism). “"A review of the book in question shows it to include pervasive vulgarity and racially insensitive language,"(The Hate you Give) Hindt said.” The story is about the struggles of a black girl in a racist environment (wouldn’t this be considered anti-racist). They can basically just ban whatever book they want. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark
The narrator makes statements that may come off as unpatriotic and anti- Christian. It is also true that the story may be too descriptive of gore filled events, but this should not stop someone from finishing the book. Once the reader gets through the mature content, they are able to see the true meaning of the story. They find out that the reason behind the novel was to warn people about sending kids to war. They can get many types of psychological diseases that cannot be cured by pills, treatments, or therapy.
After hearing a brief description of the story you might think that there aren’t many good things about they story. However, this is false, there are many good things in this book that makes it a good read. First being that it is a very intriguing book. This is good for teenage readers because often times they don’t willingly want to read, and this story will force the teenage or any reader to continue the book and continue reading the series. Secondly, this is a “good” book because it has a good balance of violence. This is a good thing because it provides readers with an exciting read. We hear and even see violence in our everyday life and I believe that it is something teenagers should be exposed to. This book gives children an insig...
Banning a book on the basis of profanity is merely a superficial reason of those who wish to limit beliefs that do not coincide with their own. By excluding a novel from a high school curriculum in order to shelter students from profanity, is an attempt to do the impossible. Profanity is found everywhere. According to TV Guide, "Profanity is uttered once every six minutes on American primetime television...
Books are free like the birds with open wings, that will see light and dark. The one thing everyone should know is you can’t cage a free bird. In the school direct there has been a lot of books banned from examples of To Kill a Mockingbird to Where the Wild Things Are. Our schools should have the freedom to pick and choice want is read but shouldn’t the students get a say. With the long process of getting a book banned, why shouldn’t we make sure the students get a say. I have three reasons why The Call of The Wild shouldn’t be banned. Tho your opinion is different I would like to hear me out on this. My three logical reasons are that there is a good message,it’s great for school debates, and the journey the Buck goes on.
Although this book uses offensive words, it is such an important part of this time period. Some adults may not want their kids reading these stories in school because they can repeat the words and use them offensively. People could also feel that this book isn’t appropriate because it was written so long ago and uses old-fashioned phrases that don't teach students proper English. People will always have their own opinions.
well as claiming that it was "explicitly pornographic" and "immoral." After months of controversy, the board ruled that the novel could be read
Many people think this book should be banned because of profanity and adult content. I can somewhat see where these adults are coming from because they don’t want their kids seeing this. There isn’t very much vulgar
There are many reasons that violence is one of the reasons that the book has been banned. “He determined to strand me outside district 12 until he can apprehend to arrest me? Drag me to the square to be locked in a stockade or whipped or hanged?” (Collins 151). This isn’t really a strong bloody gory violence that would cause a student to get sick in class it’s a basic violence that you would see in any other book that involves killing and fighting. And by exposing this type of violence to children it will raise their maturity level and have the children comprehend that there is violence around them in the world and they’re going to have to learn to deal with it. 56% of the book is challenged by parents and only 13% by libraries. This tells the reader that parents have a more difficult time with the book so you ask yourself is it more of the parents why they see the book? Or is it their child’s way they see the book? both child and parents are going to see the book differently so children may like the violence in the book but the parents may say th...

As you can now see “To Kill A Mockingbird” should not be be banned because it tells an important fictional story about America's past. This book does contain rape, violence, and foul language. The author is keeping true to the time period. Also these kind of things are seen in the world on a daily basis. Us children should not be sheltered from these kind of serious
Books are banned for many reasons but more times than not it is because of the sensitive information found within the novel that agitates the reader. As long as people have been able to develop their own opinions, others have sought to prevent them from sharing. At some point in time, every idea has ultimately become objectionable to someone. The most frequently challenged and most visible targets of such objection are the very books found in classrooms and public libraries. These controversial novels teach lessons that sometimes can be very sensitive to some but there is much more to challenged books than a controversial topic. What lies within these pages is a wealth of knowledge, such as new perspectives for readers, twisting plots, and expressions that are found nowhere else. For example, To Kill A Mockingbird, contains references to rape, racial content, and profanity that have caused many to challenge the novel in the first place. The book was banned from countless
It is a book that my child may never be able to read. It seems that the only logical reasoning to aid in what offends people is to completely eliminate the book from the library. A better approach is to understand that this book may help them examine other beliefs, attitudes, values, and traditions and to accept, tolerate, or even reject these ideas without prejudices against people who hold particular views. In the democracy In which we live, where regularly all ideas are debatable. A wide range on all points of view should be available to the public.
