Escape from Industrialization in Wells' The Time Machine Our society craves an escape from life. When our tedious jobs bog us down, we escape into a hobby. When the responsibilities of school tire us, we escape in a vacation. When world affairs take a frightening turn of events, we escape in a good movie or absorbing book. There are countless distractions available to lighten our heavy minds and ease our anxieties. But it was not always as easy as it is today. What if distractions such as these were available only to a leisured class? What if the average person did not have the means to escape, even in small ways? This was the dilemma in late Victorian England. The people who needed and craved escape the most, the working and poor classes, could not achieve it. Industrialization had locked many of them into their subservient social positions, disallowing any means of even temporary escape from the harshness of Victorian life. H.G. Wells' The Time Machine addresses this desire to escape. The unnamed Time Traveler himself does not necessarily have the desire to escape from Victorian life. He is wealthy and educated enough to spend his days creating a time machine to satisfy his desire to explore time. But escapism is addressed in his changing theories about the origin and nature of the Eloi and Morlocks, whom he encounters in his travels. Related to this theme of escape is the concept of progress not universally yielding good. The Time Machine speaks to the powerful late Victorian themes of escape and progress, painting a frightening picture of the dystopia that could result from the Victorians' ruthless exploitation of the working class during industrialization. The Tuskegee Airmen fought in two wars one against overseas enemies, and one against racism within the American military. Rudy Leon is the secretary of defense and gave a speech on their achievements in aviation. "Together the Tuskegee Airmen and the Organization of Black Airline Pilots have much to be proud of, and it's wonderful to come here and be reminded of how much you've accomplished in schools, in communities, and for the young men and women who serve in uniform, and to see how much energy and enthusiasm you are bringing to your new endeavors." (de Leon) The Airman were awarded for their achievements in ethnicity, and attitudes among races.They were involved in many military organization such as armorers, bombardiers, engineers, navigators, and maintenance and supply personnel. The airman fought two wars, one against overseas enemies, and one against racism within the American military. Leon also talked about their heroism with discrimination. "I think that is a tribute not only to your heroism, but to impact to continue shaping attitudes. (de Leon) Leon focused on how the airman reached their goals, and honored them with accreditation and service. They were the first African American pilots to shoot down German jets on a mission. They earned Distinguished Unit Citation of the war because of their heroism that contributed to the 332nd Fighter Group's.
The Tuskegee Airmen succeeded by proving success has nothing to do with color and playing a major role ending racial discrimination in the army and in the U.S. These black pilots were the first black flying unit in the U.S military. This unit was organized when Franklin D. Roosevelt decided to established an all black unit. Their first training base was located in Central Alabama near a place so called Tuskegee (Gropman). Tuskegee was located in Macon County. Not all blacks appeared to become pilots after training , but several had to become engineers, navigators, and many other varieties of occupations. In order to be a pilot, you had to be a college graduate and a possible officer in the Air Force. Many blacks from all over the U.S came to this training site to serve their country. There were multiple training phases that the men had to achieve also to be a pilot. Many men didn’t make it through all phases. The Tuskegee Airmen changed racial perceptions by achieving goals in combat and winning important medals. They broke stereotypes by winning against their strongest enemies and destroying the tactics of these enemies. These Airmen fought many enemies in war including the Germans and they proved to many white Americans that they had the ability to fly planes in war. The Tuskegee Airmen shot down 261 German airplanes in the air and on ground (Sherman). They fought in home front battles to earn the same rights as whites, while ignoring the discrimination and segregation occurring during that time (Francis and Caso 20-21). Tuskegee pilots showed Americans that they could beat the hardest enemies that some white airmen could not. They fought for their ability to fight and to show their capabilities. They changed racial perceptions by putting up a fight to change segregation and show America that had the same rights as whites. The Tuskegee Airmen, also commonly referred to as Red Tails, were a group of African-American pilots who fought in World War II. These airmen were renowned for their fight against racial prejudices through their exploits in WWII. Despite of their struggles against racism they managed to prove whites mindsets wrong with their great achievements such as, never losing a single bomber under their escort to enemy fighters. Regardless of their skill, these black aviators returned to their country to find white attitudes were unchanged and joined another battle in pursuit of desegregating their military. Booker T. Washington’s philosophy of peaceful, but persistent confrontation, influenced the way Tuskegee Airmen’s challenge to confront racial barriers within the American military. The Time Machine by H. G. Wells was an intriguing and exciting book about a Time Traveller and his journey’s through time. In this book, the Traveller explained to a group of men who were discussing the nature of time that time was the fourth dimension; just like the three dimensions of space: length, width and height. The Traveller argued that since time was a dimension, then it stood to reason that people should be able to move along the time continuum, into the past or the future. Most of the men do not seem to believe the Traveller or his theory, but agreed that they would like to travel in time, and talked about what they would do if they could. To illustrate his point, the Time Traveller went and got a model of his time machine from his laboratory to demonstrate and later returned to detail the places, things and people he had seen in his travels with his working Time Machine. Throughout the story, the Time Traveller faced setbacks and challenges, but the book outlined how he persevered and pointed to the future mankind faced.
Tensions began to build in the Colonies immediately after the 7 years war, or the French and Indian War. At this time the American Colonies were prospering. The colonists in America had no oppressing chains to throw off. “In fact, the colonists knew they were freer, more equal, more prosperous and less burdened with cumbersome feudal and monarchical restraints than any other part of mankind in the 18th Century”. (Wood 4) They had achieved an economic and political maturity that resented outside interference. (Jensen 34) They did not discover new ideas after 1763, but held up ideas of the rights of Englishmen which had begun back with the Magna Carta. The route to the American Revolution was based on this unique American character and the lack of understanding, which the British Government had for it.
The Great Depression in the 1930s was a fallout of the stock market crash of 1929. Till the 1930s, the role of government in the economy was minimal. The capitalist model envisaged a ‘laissez-faire’ economy’, wherein market forces would auto-correct implicit imbalances, with little need for government intervention. At best, the government played a facilitating role, rather than actively intervening in the economy. Herbert Hoover, who was the President when the stock market crashed in 1929, refused to actively intervene in the market economy. By 1933, there was massive unemployment, starvation, a large inventory of standing crops with no buyers, and a near-collapse of the banking system. Added to this was rampant corruption and crime. Franklin D. Roosevelt, who became President in 1933, initiated a slew of measures, clubbed under ‘the New Deal’, to recover faith in the economy, extend support to individuals, and reinvigorate the banking system and public institutions (Roosevelt Institute).

For many years, the well-known novelist, H.G. Wells has captivated the minds and imaginations of readers with his multiple best-selling books; The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and The War of the Worlds. These selections however are not Wells’ most controversial novel. The Time Machine, written in 1895, is Wells’ most talked about work. Multiple different themes and various sides are seen to be taken within this novel, one of these main themes being the separation of classes. While the Morlock’s and the Eloi, in H.G. Wells’ novel; The Time Machine, play an extremely important role in distinguishing the future for this book, one has reason to believe that there is a broader underlying meaning for these two types of civilization. In fact, this underlying meaning is believed to relate back to Wells’ own personal life during the Victorian Period, in which the working and higher classes were at extreme differences towards each other, and where Wells, being a part of the middle class, felt and experienced firsthand; the clashing of these two divisions in Victorian society.
