“I turned around and saw Vincent Caster. He was holding a can of spray paint. Then I felt Erik grab me from behind, easily pinning both my arms with one of his” (Bloor 263). Erik Fisher, Paul's older brother, plays a big role in the development of his life. This quote shows readers how badly Erik and others like Paul’s mom and Vincent Caster can change him. Erik, Paul's mom, and Vincent are the side characters that mostly changed Paul's life and decisions. This drives the story by showing Paul's altered life with these characters and how it changed him. Paul's mom affects his development by exaggerating when she signs Paul's IEP form even though Paul can partially see. To begin, Paul's mom demonstrates this when the counselor recommends the form. …show more content…
Being visually impaired, Paul is entitled to take part in our “IEP program” (27). This shows how Paul's mom is considering signing this form, which Paul doesn't want their mom to do. Another example in Tangerine that shows how Paul's mom is very nosey is when she looks for Paul's missing IEP form after finding out Paul made the team at Tangerine. “So what happens when the head of guidance opens my file and sees my IEP?” “Nothing happens, Paul. There is no IEP in your file”(105). This demonstrates that Paul's mom went to look for his IEP form but it went there because it got lost in the transferring process going in between schools. Another character in the story that impacted Paul's development in the story is Vincent Caster. He is changing Paul by spraying Paul in the eyes as a child. He was holding a can of spray paint. Then I felt Erik grab me from behind, easily pinning both my arms with just one of his. I could hear my voice crying, “I didn't tell you! I didn't tell you
A choice made by Erik affects Paul by causing his classmates and peers to view him as a freak because he has goggles and bad eyesight. This all incidentally happened because of Erik’s choices. This choice was made years and years ago by Erik and his friend, Vincent Castor, when they decided to spray paint Paul in the eyes. The reason
Paul’s parents prove to be threshold guardians when they favor Paul’s brother Erik, and hide how Paul really lost his eyesight. To start, Paul once, accused his father of favoring Erik, and Paul’s dad just makes an excuse for himself by telling Paul,”All I can say, in my own defense is that this was a critical season for Erik. College
Everyone has a mentor. Most people look up to their parents, a friend or sibling, but in Paul's case it was a tangerine farmer who was also the brother of his friend; his mentor was Luis Cruz. In the novel Tangerine, Luis Cruz represents the mythological archetype of the mentor by keeping Paul motivated, staying positive, and giving advice while acting as Paul's conscience. The first way Luis fulfills the mentorship figure for Paul is the way he motivates Paul. For instance, Luis was talking to Paul while “fighting the freeze” within their conversation, Luis says, “you seem kinda scared Erik and Arthur Bauer.you shouldn't be they're punks” (Bloor 229).
Paul in “Paul’s Case” wanted to get away from the reality and the hostile environment he faced. He was sick of Pittsburgh and the middle-class, Cordelia Street, which he lived on. Although his mother past away, his home life was as normal as could be. This is something Paul hated, normality. At school he would tell other students false stories to try to make his life seem more interesting than theirs. This ultimately caused none of the other students like him, even the teachers lash out at him. Paul was suspended from school, but he didn’t mind. He found an interest in music and in art, although he knew his father would not approve. Paul’s father wanted him to be a business man, have a normal family and have an ordinary life. Although, having a normal, ordinary life was not what Paul had in mind for his future. He dreamt of much more which caused him to believe he would never get his father’s approval.
His parents lied to Paul his whole life. They said, “ We wanted to find a way to keep you from always hating your brother.” Erik is a bully and blind to appropriate social behavior. Erik thinks he has discretion over everyone else. He is a star kicker for the High School football team, and hopes to play in college and then professional ball. He jokes about a football teammate being killed by lightning. Erik tells Arthur, his ball holder and sidekick goon, to punch Tino’s big brother Luis, and hits him on the head with a “blackjack” club. Luis then dies of an aneurysm about a week later. Erik is blind to how his actions affect others. He is not able to take accountability for what he does to other people. He is not accountable for the harm he has caused Paul, Luis, or anyone else. If he is good at football he acts like he can be an exception to the rules of
Paul's father is a single parent trying to raise his children in a respectable neighborhood. He is a hard worker and trying to set a good example for his son. His father puts pressure on Paul by constantly referring to a neighbor, whom he feels is a perfect model for his son to follow.
...onas which cause him to overlap his personas making him overlap his names with his different personas. Paul who has now lost control feels powerless and obediently listens to Ousia about going to the police serving his time and then coming out of prison to live a happy life with her and Flan.
In the beginning of the story, Paul seems to be a typical teenage boy: in trouble for causing problems in the classroom. As the story progresses, the reader can infer that Paul is rather withdrawn. He would rather live in his fantasy world than face reality. Paul dreaded returning home after the Carnegie Hall performances. He loathed his "ugly sleeping chamber with the yellow walls," but most of all, he feared his father. This is the first sign that he has a troubled homelife. Next, the reader learns that Paul has no mother, and that his father holds a neighbor boy up to Paul as "a model" . The lack of affection that Paul received at home caused him to look elsewhere for the attention that he craved.
Erik also has a right-hand man, named Arthur Bauer, who has also been the reason why Paul has lost some friends. In Paul’s life with Erik, he has contributed to the death of Luis, laughed at Mike Costello’s death, and opened Paul’s eyelids and spray painted his eyes as “payback.” First things first, Erik has contributed to the death of Luis Cruz.
Paul and his mom were having a conversation about paul moving to Tangerine middle school. And not Lake Windsor middle school because they had a sinkhole and paul and one of his friends had to go save a lot of people and it was really scary to paul. So now paul doesn’t want any more sinkholes where he has to save people again and paul. Another reason why he would like to attend Tangerine middle school is just to play soccer because paul tends to love soccer. After that paul started telling his mom that she ruined pauls life at the Lake Windsor middle school and it all started when his mom turned in that IEP (Pg. 93-94). Paul wants to attend to Tangerine middle school so he can play
How would it feel to live with somebody who caused so much damage to people’s lives, but always got away with it? In Tangerine, Erik Fisher made harmful and uncivil choices that affected many people’s lives. Erik’s choices impact Paul Fisher by making Paul feel less of himself, getting teased and bullied, and Paul’s friends being afraid to come over and hang out with him.

Anthony Patch is a privileged boy that’s waiting for his grandpa to die so he can inherit his money, which demonstrates that he’s a symbol for greed. For example, he could have taken advantage of the fact that was smart, which is shown by the fact that he went to Harvard. Instead he decided not to apply himself because he believed he could go the easy way out by expecting his grandpa’s inheritance. Due to this, he never learns that hard work is the only thing that will bring him success.
In the movie, The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the main antagonist, Ego the Living Planet, wanted to destroy life across the universe after searching for life and then being disappointed with what he found. He felt that alien life had no meaning and thought it would be better off being eradicated. Eventually, he is shown the error of his beliefs from his son, Star-Lord, and tells him that life is about accepting people for who they are. Three people that also share this belief, except wanting to kill all life, are Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye, Christopher McCandless from the biography film Into the Wild, and myself from my life. One quote from The Catcher in the Rye that describes all these people is from Mr. Antolini when he tells Holden, “Among other
