“Either you are crazy or I am.” said the African American, “We both are. “ Followed up by the pedestrian who walks off casually. This is the animosity built up throughout the whole time this African American is in this town, he is mistreated, discriminated against and shown first-hand how they view social equality in their town. In the passage “On Being Crazy” the story is told by a African American taking stops around a town, based in Texas. Throughout these stops he encounters conflicts with people of the town and with what they believe is social equality. His first stop is at a dinner, as he sits down his waiter tells him “Sir… Do you wish to force your company upon those who do not want you?” The colored man explains he only wishes to eat, in spite of this the waiter replies with saying “Are you aware, sir, that this is social equality.” Judging by the way this man is using the term “sir” conveys that he does not mean any disrespect toward the African American but needs him to know this is the way it must be in their society. That is their social equality. Under those circumstances the colored man takes off and heads to a theater. This colored man is moving from place to place, not bothering anyone, not doing anything out of the norm, but racial remarks and treatment are present. The colored man feels as if he is the crazy one, primarily because of all the different perspectives the town has on their social equality, but although there are many perspectives. He still seems to do the wrong
