Equality for all. Most politicians believe in trying to throw that somewhere in their campaign so they will be supported by the LGBT community. The LGBT community stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transvestite. No matter how much we try to bring ourselves to want to accept them, we just can’t. They are an outcast in society today for falling in love with the same sex, or for being who they truly want to be. In 2011, there were thirty murders committed against the LGBT community, all were classified as hate crimes but nothing else would be done about them. All we do is sit back and watch them be dehumanized for being who they are and marrying who they love. The question everyone must ask themselves is why are homosexual men and women not …show more content…
Many religious leaders and followers have spoken out against this law. The Bible tells us a lot about everything, but one thing that we must hold true in order to follow Christ is love and compassion. Without love, it’s hard to see what is good in the world. The world is such a scary and messed up place, living your life without love is extremely hard. The Bible tells us in Luke 6:31 “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” As broad of a bible verse as this is, it tells us that love others as you want to be loved. Hating homosexual marriage is wrong because you don’t want someone hating your marriage because you’re straight. Many places have not allowed this on their campus because of Christian beliefs. “Despite the legal difficulties created by the recent changes, several Christian colleges — including Wheaton College, Baylor University, Union University and Cedarville University — have indicated that they intend to continue to exclude married same-sex couples from their health benefit plans” (Dunningham NP). This shows how some university’s try to use the Christian beliefs to be able to not allow same-sex couples the same health benefits as straight couples. Dunningham goes on to tell about the economic inequalities there are with same-sex couples. “According to a report from think tank the Williams Institute and the Center for American Progress, this can result in those people in domestic …show more content…
Today there are killings and fights and protest about gay marriage; this is not just an older generation thing. This is the second problem which is society today. If we see a couple walking down the street holding hands, we smile and continue on. If we see a same sex couple doing the same thing, we have to do a double take and give them a dirty look. The reason we do this is because we have grown up seeing same-sex marriage wrong. We as a society are not used to seeing this, so we cast judgment because we have not opened our hearts for this change yet. People want to say it is wrong for religious reasons, or because it 's how they grew up, or because it is gross. This is not a reason to deny someone else the right to be happy. Society today is so judgmental towards homosexuals that we have stopped treating them as human. “More than sixty companies, including Apple, Nike, and Morgan Stanley, signed onto a brief submitted to the Supreme Court supporting same-sex marriage in February, according to Fortune” (Berman NP). This article shows us that some of the biggest companies in the world support gay marriage. Apple has been a proud support from the beginning with rainbow signs and posters. The rest fell in love with loving others and allowing others to be equal to each other. If you believe in love and you are in love wouldn’t you want your fellow neighbor to be able to feel that one day, no matter who it is
Throughout American history, we have seen the United States become more progressive in their social issues, such as the abolishment of slavery, women’s suffrage, and the Civil Rights Movement. But as time has passed, we have encountered another group that is being discriminated against: homosexuals. Some states try their best to give equal rights to homosexuals so that they are respected as equally as everyone else. But in many states, such as Kansas and Arizona, private companies and businesses are given the right to turn down homosexual couples if it interferes with their religious beliefs. These two states also included places like hospitals where homosexuals can be denied from medical attention. These laws are very inhumane and are very hurtful to a large population of people today. But what if the people in states such as Kansas and Arizona think it is okay to have these laws instilled?
Why is it wrong to let humans of the same sex marry someone they truly love? Many people in our society share different opinions on why it is right and why it is wrong. Kim Davis (a clerk in Rowan County Kentucky) decided to say no to handing out marriage licenses to same sex couples because she felt it was against her religion. She refused to give a license to a couple of the same sex and was put in jail. In this case, I am against Davis because you as a person have no right to go against law and this individual freedom. I am very religious, but I have come to see that there should never be a reason to forbid someone from the person they love just based off of their sex. The law in the U.S permits same-sex marriage and no matter how mad people get, it is now allowed. Men and women now have freedom to love their partner with comfort in society. They now have the right to be married. Gay marriage has a historical background dating back to the 1970’s. In the case of Baker v.s Nelson, two men applied for a marriage license and were rejected even though the Minnesota law did not specify gender in the law of marriage. This is another point where law did not specify gender, so why was it rejected? This tells me that people judged and did not like the idea of same-sex marriage, so they just agreed to reject it. Individual freedom to love another person and get married was taken away from these people just because
People of LGBT community keep on facing numerous discrimination and hatred from our society throughout their life. Our society is often unknown and ignorant about the right of LGBT community, therefore, confused about how to respect or welcome them into our society. Because of our unfamiliarity and of lack of knowledge about this LGBT community, sometimes, our occasional effort to respect this community turns into a discriminatory statement towards that community. For instance, our president Donald J. Trump’s statement on LGBT society just points a finger on us of how much we actually know about this society when he states, “There can be no discrimination against gays. I’m against gay marriage”. It shows how confuse we are about the rights of LGBT society that even our president couldn’t make it clear whether he is against discrimination or against the equality of this particular society. There are several other instances when our view on this society as a monstrous one creates many societal discriminations. In many instances, LGBT couples don't offer to enjoy the societal advantages like any other opposite-sex married couples, and consequently, go through several societal discriminations and denied many societal rights and justices. Furthermore, in
The article “How Homophobia Hurts Everyone” by Warren J. Blumenfeld describes the effects that homophobia has on all people, not just the person who is homosexual. The article tells the story of two siblings and one thing that stood out to me was “throughout our school years, she was constantly teased for having a ‘faggot’ brother”. In addition to this, she was questioned about her own sexuality and peer pressure, that resulted with her being less close to her brother for her own protection. It is not fair that the author was bullied for being the person that he is, and it is definitely not right that his sister was bullied for who her brother is.
For some background, this case escalated to the Supreme Court since several groups of same-sex couples from different states, sued state agencies when their marriage was refused to be recognized. As it escalated through appeals, the plaintiffs argued that the states were violating the Equal Protection clause and the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Equal Protection, according to the Constitution refers to the fact that, “any State [shall not] deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law…” (23). The opposition of this case was that, 1) The Constitution does not address same-sex marriage as a policy, and 2) The sovereignty of states regarding the decision. Ultimately, and according to the Oyez project, the Court held that “[the Amendment] guarantees the right to marry as one of the fundamental liberties it protects, and that analysis applies to same-sex couples,” and therefore, same-sex marriage is a fundamental liberty.
The gay rights movement has made great progress in the United States, compared to generations ago, with the legalization of marriage in some states, and also the gaining of certain equal rights. Many people today accept homosexuals within society, and society in general is more...

What really grinds my gears is seeing homophobia in the modern world. Yes, I acknowledge that it is seen as a sin—especially in the early times when people believe in witchcraft. Seriously, it’s 2016 and we’re having a little fit over who uses what bathroom? We’re having worse things going on! We have ISIS, we have a potential war coming up, we have school shootings and gang violence, and worse of all we have the possibility of Trump being our president and people are losing their marbles over who uses what bathroom? It’s just a bathroom! If it makes you so uncomfortable to go into a bathroom that is gender neutral, then don’t use it! Simple! Being a gay boy in school made me uncomfortable going to the boy’s bathroom/locker room. I grew up in a small town—Oroville, WA—where homosexuality wasn’t really seen, and some people felt uncomfortable by it. I hated going to the boy’s bathroom/locker room because I constantly felt I didn’t belong with them, but I didn’t belong with the girls either…I didn’t know where I belonged. I felt if I went into the boy’s bathroom/locker room, then they would judge me or feel uncomfortable with me in there—I used to think that boy’s hated me in there because they felt that I was looking at them or checking them out
... stop crime against those minorities that need help to become more known to the world. LGBTQ, it does not matter what they are, they should be accepted as the person they are and they were born to be.
Equality has never been something that comes easy to us and usually doesn’t come without a price. Many times, there have been great sacrifices by many in order to achieve one common goal. Whether it be women’s suffrage or the black civil rights movements, it took many people to accomplish what they did. But with all differences aside, people as a whole are still not always equal. Although there have been attempts at creating this type of atmosphere, it seems that there are always just enough bumps in the road to throw everything off course. But what are the advantages to this type of society and how significant are they? Is it worth the same struggles that others have gone through for their causes? Or do the consequences simply outweigh the rewards in establishing this type of community? These are the most basic questions needed to dissect some of the problems that some communist communities have run into. They also challenge us to truly think about what it means to be truly equal.
... Society needs to reevaluate the definition of love and the fact that all humans are created equal and should be able to love whomever they want to. There needs to be more laws and support for same-sex couples and gay marriage. Laws should be made to protect those who choose to love the person of the same-sex, and no discrimination against gays. Judging same-sex marriages should never be acceptable when including: health concerns, adoption, living conditions, job opportunities, ECT... Everyone should be able to love whoever they want and never let anything get into the way of that. In today’s society some people can't be with the person they truly love, because it is not society acceptable in most areas and it is too much of a struggle live like that on a daily basis. The world needs to open their eyes and realize that this is not acceptable under any circumstances.
“The good neighbor looks beyond the external accidents and discerns those inner qualities that make all men human, and, therefore, brothers.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once preached this to his congregation at Ebenezer Baptist Church. I found this to be true on a trip I took to the Deep South with a group I am in called Operation Understanding Hampton Roads. OUHR promotes the interaction between Jewish and African American students in order to learn about each others cultures. In the Deep South, my OUHR group visited several cities which were significant to the civil rights movement, such as Selma, Montgomery, Birmingham, and Atlanta. Since I have grown up in a racially tolerant house, I felt I had nothing to gain from the trip besides an enjoyably week with my new OUHR friends. Much to my surprise, it was in these cities where I learned the true meaning of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words. It is important to be a participant in life rather than a bystander held fast by prejudice and convention.
Turning away same sex-couples the right to get married condemns homosexuals as lesser and portrays the picture that it is acceptable to discriminate against them. According to Gale Students , "...many members of the gay and lesbian community continue to face serve discrimination, including denial of employment and education opportunities". Based on this evidence, one could infer that being heterosexual is the only way to be if you want to be accepted and equal to other in your community. If a child where to read this quote he/she would automatically think there is something wrong wit...
Equality is a concept mankind never is able to grasp correctly. Of course humans will always search for different solutions to create fairness, but factors such as human greed, ignorance of mass populations, and even biological aspects stagnates the process of equality. The oldest and most relevant discussion on equality lies with the difference of sex; man versus woman. Initially, men, because of their physical superiority, were given the prospects many women never even dreamt to have. Conversely, as time has progressed, women have fought this unfair treatment with demands of suffrage and similar rights to those of their male equivalents. Greatly enough, this generation has done an exceptional job in the challenge of overcoming sexism and inequality. However, will this search for equality ever end? When can we say we have created an equal race of men and women? The fact of the matter is that it is truly impossible to have equality between the sexes because of predisposed circumstances that are not easily controllable in the slightest bit.
Legalizing gay marriage has caused many problems in the society today. The U.S. Constitution is making some people go against their religious beliefs because of this law. I personally do not think people should have to go against their religion to support something that God would not be pleased with. We have enough things going on in this horrible world and irrelevant things like this should not be added to society’s problems.
