Environmental Identity
What is environmental identity? "Environmental identity, is how one views oneself in relation to the natural world. Environmental identity is part of the way in which one forms his/her self-concept and a sense of connection to some part of the nonhuman natural environment, based on personal history, emotional attachment, and/or similarity. This connection in turn affects the ways in which one perceives and acts toward the world. "One-hundred and thirty-seven years later the Maine game wardens remain just as committed, to the natural resources, citizens, and visitors of Maine" (maine.gov). The environmental identity of a warden is what gave them that job. Their love for the outdoors. The Maine Warden Service is responsible for law enforcement pertaining to the inland fishery and wildlife resource management and protection, checking for registrations and operations of all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles, boats and safety of them, and of course general laws of this state (maine.gov). They are also responsible for investigations. An investigation that they could be responsible for is a hunting-related shooting incident or maybe recreational vehicle involved in collisions (maine.gov) They are also highly responsible for search and rescue. Most of the time spent on the job as a Maine Game Warden is, search and rescue. Many people go out into the Maine woods and easily get turned around. So, Wardens's are also responsible to look for them. Another thing that The Maine Warden Service is responsible for is data collection. "Data collection is needed for the protection and management of wildlife resources" (maine.gov). Even though this job is mainly for Maine's biologist wardens sometimes lend a hand. This is the biggest environmental organization with over three million contributors. Traditionally associated with the progressive movement, the club was one of the first large-scale environmental preservation organizations in the world, and currently engages in lobbying politicians to promote green policies. Recent focuses of the club include promoting sustainable energy, mitigating global warming, and opposing coal. Sierra Club their mission statement is "To explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; To practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; To educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives." (www.sierraclub.org) This club has five reliable goals that are associated with this group. They are too, "achieve ambitiously and just climate solutions; explore, enjoy, and protect our nations lands, waters, air, and wildlife; engage and support a broad, diverse, inclusive, and powerful movement; become an ever stronger, high-performance organization" (sierraclub.org, 2017) They are currently wanting to solve the climate crisis, primarily through a successful transition to a resource-efficient, clean energy economy that better serves people and nature. Generational conflicts, political strife, environmental regulations, stakeholders in big oil, and many more hurdles affect the push to fully sustainable economies around the world and even here in America. In a world where coal, oil, and natural gas are limited, countries are gobbling it all up as fast as they can before other poorer countries come on the grid. Even though America and other countries gobble up these resources the life of the people is still a struggle to meet basic needs. Sustainability is an intermingling of resource use and protection of the “quality of life”, it is met by using resources sparingly and by recycling or reducing the use of other non-renewable resources to provide for our immediate need, but also to conserve and protect the needs of the next generation and to improve the quality of all the lives to come.
Sustainability is the ability to be sustained, supported, upheld or confirmed. According to UN (2014), “sustainability is the procedure of development which assists the future generation ability to meet their needs with present needs. The utmost practice of sustainability is in relation to sustainability development. Sustainable development is a forming standard for human life on a determinate world (d.n, 2014).
Ecological theory is a theory developed by Urie Bronfenbrenner that states that the “systems” around you are vitally important in human development. Within the theory there are many systems including the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem. Each system is defined by a different aspect of a person’s surroundings that would affect their development. The systems begin with the aspect that is closest to you, your day-to-day life. The Microsystem includes all of the places, people, and experiences that are found in your daily life. These include school, work, parents. friends, neighbors, and so forth. The next most impactful system is the exosystem. The mesosystem is defined by two entities within your microsysytem affecting each other. The next system is called the exosystem. The exosystem is full of things that don’t affect you directly but will eventually
promote/advise tourists on how to behaviour to stay safe, and respect cultures to aim towards sustainability, but with the high amount of tourists not everyone will listen, and the actions of locals cannot be determined even with policy.
Identity. What is identity? One will say that it is the distinct personality of an individual. Others will say that identity is the behavior of a person in response to their surrounding environment. At certain points of time, some people search for their identity in order to understand their existence in life. In regards, identity is shaped into an individual through the social trials of life that involve family and peers, the religious beliefs by the practice of certain faiths, and cultural awareness through family history and traditions. These are what shape the identity of an individual.
When discussing the word sustainability, the first topic that comes to mind is the environment. We as humans have “received a particular view of what sustainability means,” believing that it is “essentially about eco-efficiency” (Foundation for International Education). Although the environment is an aspect of being sustainable, the word encompasses much more. Webster’s English Dictionary defines the word as “using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged.” Being sustainable can relate to every aspect of life, whether it be environmental, social, or economical. These three areas contribute to sustainability and the idea of holistic effectiveness. According to the FIE Sustainability Lecture, something is “holistic because it is not just concerned with ecology but also the economy and society, and it is effective rather than efficient because it is not just concerned with doing less harm but with making a positive impact.” In a large metropolitan city such as London, it is easy to analyze these three areas with their relation to sustainability. Every day the world around us is changing ever so slightly in many different ways. Humans can affect the environment through our day to day lifestyle without even noticing the change. An ecological footprint is a measurement of how much a person uses the environment around them to live their life. This given measurement can help one to see their impact on the earth. It is an important tool to understand what actually a human does to change the habitat near them. My ecological footprint results gave me a perspective of how my daily life can impact the world I live in, as well as, how I as an individual can change my actions to make less waste on earth. Today talking about environmental issues lately to be like a common topic discussion until people take it for granted. However, the world facing a complex environmental problems related to each trouble that connected to one another and come out with greater impacts to the environment and humans. This is because the effects of environmental only can be seen in long term period rather than immediately result show up. Environmental issues must become one of the controversial matters in the society in order to make people know the truth what the world currently facing. There were a lot of environmental disaster happened such as climate change, global warming, various of pollutions, earthquake and etc. the rise of environmental issues begin with this urban development occur through several countries following with the technologies equip along. For sure, development will cause a huge negative impact to the environment if it deals without a care. Besides, the environment is the place in the ecosystem to hold and use in finding resources to continuously survive in this world. Thus, the finding and digging for the resources which happening extensively without preservation will not restore the surrounding similar with before. But then, the change cannot be refuse and people need to take an action to save the threaten the world and the ecosystem from being extinct. If each country has own output in causing an environmental problem, then consider the world to hold all the damage occurred. Exposing the effects of environmental issues throughout the world, make people realize the important to take care the environment.
What will the world look like fifty years from now? Many people might imagine living in a future where flying cars and teleportation are possibilities, but for environmentalists the future does not look as bright or exciting. Environmentalists fear that without radical change and global action towards sustainability the earth will soon become completely inhospitable. People see it in the news all the time about how the ice caps are melting, Earth’s forests are disappearing, and natural disasters are more recurrent and severe than ever all due to human activity. It also does not take a whole lot of looking around to notice the price of everything going up or the steady climb of the world population nowadays. Globally, humans are faced with the problem of providing for an ever increasing population with a finite amount of resources. One solution environmentalists have proposed is sustainability. As resources become more limited and the world population grows, the aspects of sustainability- the principles, major components, topics of concern, and human responsibility towards sustainability become increasingly relevant in global society.
There are lots of environmental issues going on globally. The earth faces problems such as pollution, global warming, waste disposal, and loss of biodiversity. These are just a small amount of issues out of the so many. These environmental problems pose an abundant amount of risk to the health of humans and animals. There needs to be a solution to all these problems and that is by informing others, so that way everyone can make the environment a better place.
Environmental pollution has always remained a serious problem in society today. Our planet is often being polluted by many toxins that are not only deadly to us, but our wildlife too. Environmental pollution leads to air pollution, environmental crisis, and global warming. Now there are many different ways that can help these topics be preventable. People need to understand what environmental sustainability truly is. Learning environmental sustainability will give people the tools and knowledge to help sustain our planet before it is too late. Planet earth is our home and people need to understand the damage being done to it. Understanding these important key factors will lead our planet to become healthier and a better place for life to live.
The natural conservancy is an organization that is out to conserve the lands and waters on which life depends on. In this paper, I will argue that the natural conservancy organization mission statement captures the true essence of environmentalism. The mission statement of the Nature Conservancy represents the true essence of environmentalism since it recognizes the intrinsic value of all living beings while prioritizing the importance of protecting nature for future generations.
Environmental science refers to the study of the effects that occur through natural and unnatural processes. The study involves the interactions of the Earth’s physical components that take place on the environment. Notably, the natural environment consists of all existing and non-existing things that exist on the planet. Full ecological systems that operate as natural practices without requiring the intervention of human beings are also included in the environment. Furthermore, physical units such as animals, vegetation, rocks, microorganisms, natural phenomena, and atmosphere usually occur within the boundaries of the environment (Altman and Wohlwill 113). Although the environment embraces natural resources and physical phenomena that need clear limits, it is worth noting that renewable and non-renewable energy resource is an environmental science topic that should receive top priority next year due to various reasons.
The environment around us gives us the habitat to live, is a condition for our existence and development so that protecting environment which is one of today’s most serious issues means protecting our lives. But almost every day we hear a new problem badly affecting the environment. The list of the new difficulties seems to be endless. We are all aware of these concerns and can admit that we caused them. Now, environmental protection is not the work of a single individual as it is the responsibility of the whole community, of every single person exists on this planet. The measures range from each citizen to the government.
