Environmental Identity

What is environmental identity? "Environmental identity, is how one views oneself in relation to the natural world. Environmental identity is part of the way in which one forms his/her self-concept and a sense of connection to some part of the nonhuman natural environment, based on personal history, emotional attachment, and/or similarity. This connection in turn affects the ways in which one perceives and acts toward the world. In other terms, a belief that the environment is important to a person and an important part of who that person is" (Freed, 2015). Environmental identity can be broken down into different identities. "One-hundred and thirty-seven years later the Maine game wardens remain just as committed, to the natural resources, citizens, and visitors of Maine" (maine.gov). The environmental identity of a warden is what gave them that job. Their love for the outdoors. The Maine Warden Service is responsible for law enforcement pertaining to the inland fishery and wildlife resource management and protection, checking for registrations and operations of all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles, boats and safety of them, and of course general laws of this state (maine.gov). They are also responsible for investigations. An investigation that they could be responsible for is a hunting-related shooting incident or maybe recreational vehicle involved in collisions (maine.gov) They are also highly responsible for search and rescue. Most of the time spent on the job as a Maine Game Warden is, search and rescue. Many people go out into the Maine woods and easily get turned around. So, Wardens's are also responsible to look for them. Another thing that The Maine Warden Service is responsible for is data collection. "Data collection is needed for the protection and management of wildlife resources" (maine.gov). Even though this job is mainly for Maine's biologist wardens sometimes lend a hand. This is the biggest environmental organization with over three million contributors. Traditionally associated with the progressive movement, the club was one of the first large-scale environmental preservation organizations in the world, and currently engages in lobbying politicians to promote green policies. Recent focuses of the club include promoting sustainable energy, mitigating global warming, and opposing coal. Sierra Club their mission statement is "To explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; To practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; To educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives." (www.sierraclub.org) This club has five reliable goals that are associated with this group. They are too, "achieve ambitiously and just climate solutions; explore, enjoy, and protect our nations lands, waters, air, and wildlife; engage and support a broad, diverse, inclusive, and powerful movement; become an ever stronger, high-performance organization" (sierraclub.org, 2017) They are currently wanting to solve the climate crisis, primarily through a successful transition to a resource-efficient, clean energy economy that better serves people and nature.
