Why is Entrepreneurship important at Kodak? Consider the ‘global company’ impact on Kodak Australasia.
Introduction
Established in 1888, Kodak has been a market leader through continual innovation in existing markets and successful establishment in new markets in the very competitive market place of photography. Kodak’s success would not be anywhere near what it is today with out the implementation of entrepreneurship in the organisation, the encouraged constant entrepreneurial mindset that its employees posses, and it cutting edge Research and Development team. The entrepreneurial mindset of the employees of Kodak is shown through the many different areas Kodak are pursuing in the market place, and it is what gives Kodak its edge in such a competitive market place.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation within Kodak
The key to entrepreneurship within Kodak come down to two things: 1) Staff
2) R&D Department
Staff have an enormous role in the entrepreneurial side of Kodak, with staff constantly being encouraged to think out side the square. Evidence of this is the fact that over 100 employees have filed at least 20 patents each, with 3 of them having filed over 100, all on behalf of the company. This promotes the employees to take ownership of their ideas, which encourages motivation to follow up ideas and essentially get them up and running and successful. Examples of this are such projects as providing the photography equipment in a robot that went to Mars and the potential implementation of quality cameras into mobile phones.
New Markets:
Kodak is a company, that when it sees an opportunity to advance into a new area where revenue can be made, it not only enters that area, but becomes the field leader. The importance placed on entry and growth in the various new markets has led to Kodak becoming an international giant.
The major new market that Kodak has to deal with at the minute is the implementation of digital electronics. Kodak’s fast acting in this area has made it an early market leader. However, market leading in this day and age is a lot harder than ever before, because of the amount of new entrants into the market. But with every up comes a down, and so too, this new market of digital posses a threat to Kodak, because it makes their traditional products obsolete. It is considered that photography only became widely available to the public when the Kodak Eastman Company introduced the box shaped Brownie Camera in 1900. (Baker, n.p.) Its features became more refined since its original placing on the market; one of the reasons why it has become considered the birth of public photography is because of the processing. Using a similar image capture system, the brownie exposed the light to a 120mm roll of film, which could be wound round, meaning six photographs could be taken before the slides needed removing. The first Brownie used a six-exposure cartridge that Kodak processed for the photographer. (Kodak.com, n.d.) Realistically, the armature photographers did not need to understand darkroom processes, they could simply use capture the subjects, and send it to be developed. The cameras were relatively affordable, targeting many different markets, which is apparent from their advertisements. Figure 2 Is an advertisement from for the Eastman Kodak Company’s Brownie Camera; It states in bold lettering “Operated by any school boy or girl” which emphasis how it was targeted for amateur use.
George Eastman founded the Eastman Kodak Company in 1888, and pioneered the photography industry with new technology that would help bring photography to the mainstream. After its inception, Kodak created what many called a "monopoly" in the photography industry. Both in 1921 and in 1954 the company had to endure a consent decree imposed by the US Government in which it was concluded that Kodak monopolized the market in violation of the Sherman Act (the first and oldest of all US federal, antitrust laws). Kodak settled the 1921 decree and agreed to be bound by restrictions. The Company was barred from preventing dealers from freely selling goods produced by competitors. On the other hand, the 1954 decree prevented Kodak from selling a bundle that included the color film and the photofinishing, among other restrictions. This tying arrangement of products is an agreement by a party to sell one product on the condition that the buyer also purchases a different (or tied) product, or at least agrees that he will not purchase that product from any other supplier. In this case, Kodak was selling the photo film while conditioning the buyer to also buy the photofinishing product (because it was included in the price). Both decrees had supporting evidence of the high market power that Kodak had at the time, for which both cases were based.
The history of Eastman Kodak begins George Eastman wanted to simplify photography, so that everyone can enjoy capturing special moments and just want to limit this craft to trained professionals. George Eastman started on this quest in 1878; he was one of the first to demonstrate the convenience of dry plates. With dry plates, photographers would be able to expose and develop pictures when they wanted or needed to which made it more convenient, dry plates then went into mass production the following year in 1879 (Kodak n.d.) From there George Eastman continued to find ways to get photography into the hand of the people. After his demonstration of dry plates he then went on to invent the first roll holder for negative film and in1885 he invented the first transparent photographic film known as “roll film” that we know today. Berkun outlines ways to tap into innovation and pulls from history to guide us into the future. His simple and common prose gave me courage to tackle the tough problems. I now feel as though I have a firm grasp on what it means to be an effective creator.

Besides, there is no reason to keep a person alive if there is not a possibility of recover it would only affect the economy. As stated by the Medical Billing Advocates of America, “as many people have seen, the final cost associated with life support can be an enormous burden once that loved one has passed away.” Contrasting the cost of Euthanasia with the cost of keeping someone alive, the results show a considerable difference of spend that if possible should be avoided. Although euthanasia requests have begun to stabilize throughout the years while palliative care has improved, euthanasia will never completely disappear. This topic depends on the type of person someone is and what thethat person is enduring. Many people fear the process of dying and the dying itself. Even though there are treatments to relieve some pain throughin the process, a patient still knows death will eventually come. Some might believe it is better to end it now rather than prolonging it. Improving palliative care will not get rid of euthanasia requests, but instead, prolong the requests. A person’s suffering can only be temporarily managed. Even if a patient is on a pain relieving treatment, there might be other side effects that cause the patient to suffer, such as nausea and vomiting. Some may like the idea of temporarily removing the suffering, but others may not because of the realization of needing a treatment to temporarily make himself feel better. These treatments can be very costly and, over time, can add up to a great amount of money that a patient and his family does not have. Also, those who are on palliative care may decide later on that the wait or the side effects are not worth it anymore and eventually request euthanasia. These technological advances have given the hearing impaired the chance to live their life just like any other. With the emergence of sign language, assistive devices, mainstreaming, hearing aids and cochlear plants the millions of Americans who experience impaired hearing have the chance to improve their hearing so that they can accomplish the things that they were once not able to do.

Zahra’s(1986) definition of corporate entrepreneurship suggests a formal or informal activity aimed at creating new businesses in established firms through product and process innovations and market developments,whereas sathe(1985) defines corporate entrepreneurship as a process of organizational renewal. Corporate Entrepreneurship has emerged as a much needed ingredient contributing towards the growth of any organization under a changing business environment.

In addition, in the book, “Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education, and Research.,” by the Institute of Medicine (US) Committee on Advancing Pain Research, Care, and Education, the institute quotes an individual with chronic pain who states, “Appointment after appointment, test after test, and of course, nothing to really confirm [the diagnosis]. . . . Having pain that I did not understand, as a physical therapist, fearing some dreadful disease was hard enough. . . . So, in addition to pain, I had anxiety and depression.” The authors are showcasing, first hand, a patient who faces agonizing chronic pain--someone who could possibly benefit from assisted suicide or euthanasia. Not only to patients feel physically painful, but they feel emotional and mental pain.
