Throughout the years, textbook education has failed yet again. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, English, French and Spanish settlers’ relations with Native Americans were not always bad. Too often, people believe that Native Americans were evil and only did bad things to all other people that were not in their tribe. True education is knowing all of the facts. This essay will give all the true details about when Europeans first settled America. The settlers we learn the most about are the English settlers. Like the English, their goal was to spread their religion. The French and Spanish were generally kinder and respectful to the Native Americans. The first document is about a frenchman talking about his relations with the Natives. He says that the Indians are great warriors but very cruel in times of war, but they have no reason to fight the French and are very friendly. French set up missions to assist with their overall goal of converting the Native people to Christianity. In the end, these missions turned bad but originally started off as something that was very useful to the Indians. Since the Indians lived in a different part of the world than the Spanish, spoke a different language, and had a completely different culture, it was hard for the Spanish to convert them. The biggest obstacle was the fact that that the Indians worshipped a different god than the Europeans. One effective way was to dive into the Indian culture full fledge and live among them. People don’t tend to like listening to other strangers unless they personally know them. Once the settlers fit in with them they could trust them and learn about the religion they were talking about. The Spanish and Native Americans interrelated so much that they began to have mixed offspring. This was so common that they even had names for each type of offspring between the mix of races. Not every Frenchman was nice to the Indians either. One Spaniard wrote a letter describing just that. He believes that the men taking advantage of the Indians should be punished for “plundering” the Indie people.
