The World State decision to eliminate emotions is a horrible choice because everyone has the right to feel the way they want to. In the “Brave New World”, no one is allowed to be themselves. They take soma to block society emotions, and everyone is for everyone. Without soma the World State would be completely insane. The World State is not right for the decision to eliminate emotions. Relationships, Social body, and Stability, should always be a right to everyone. Wanting to be in a commitment relationship causes many problems in the World State. Fanny said, “It’s not a disagreeable about having one or two men besides Henry. And seeing you ought to be a little more promiscuous,” (Huxley 43). Bernard noticed the manipulation of Lenina. Lenina wanted to have sex with just one person, but she wasn’t allowed. “Everyone belongs to everyone else” (page #) was one of the world state’s mottoes. Imagine living in a society where there is no sense of independence, individual thought or freedom. A society where the government uses disturbing methods that dehumanize people in order to force conformity upon them. Taking away any sense of emotion, It would be very undesirable to live in a society with such oppression. Such society is portrayed in Aldous Huxley's novel Brave New World. The World State uses social restrictions to create permanent artificial personalities for people within the society. The World State also uses controlled groupings of people to brainwash them further to be thoughtless people with no sense of individualism. Lastly, the World State uses drugs to create artificial happiness for people, leaving no room for intense emotion which causes people to revolt against the World State. Within the novel Brave New World, it is seen that the World State eliminates individuality through social restrictions, government controlled groupings and the abuse of drugs to maintain control of the population.
The moral dilemma of monogamy would be the bane of Brave New World itself. If the people of Brave New World found out about religion the people would learn the moral dilemma of “every one belongs to everyone else”(Huxley 31). Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World illustrates a colorful, fantastic universe of sex and emotion, programming and fascism that has a powerful draw in a happy handicap. This reality pause button is called “Soma”. “Take a holiday from reality whenever you like, and come back without so much as a headache or a mythology.” ( Huxley 54 ).
In a perfect society, humans do not need to resort to drugs to keep society in balance. In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, society is based on keeping everyone happy- and if for some reason someone becomes unhappy then there is always soma- the “perfect” drug. Humans are conditioned from the very start to be happy while performing their specific tasks. “We also predestine and condition. In Brave New World, Aldous Huxley deftly creates a society that is indeed quite stable. Although they are being mentally manipulated, the members of this world are content with their lives, and the presence of serious conflict is minimal, if not nonexistent. For the most part, the members of this society have complete respect and trust in their superiors, and those who don’t are dealt with in a peaceful manner as to keep both society and the heretic happy. Maintained by cultural values, mental conditioning, and segregation, the idea of social stability as demonstrated in Brave New World is, in my opinion, both insightful and intriguing.
In the first couple of chapters, Lenina, a young woman, is introduced. When we first meet her, we learn that she has been seeing a guy, Henry, for the past 4 months. The reader can assume that this is normal, since the same happens in our everyday lives, but we soon discover that this is abnormal. In the new world, a regulation is set that men and woman cannot be in committed relationships, but are supposed to have sex with as many men or woman possible. The future of the world is a place of thriving commerce and stability. Safety and happiness are at an all-time high, and no one suffers from depression or any other mental disorders. There are no more wars, as peace and harmony spread to almost every corner of the world. There is no sickness, and people are predestined to be happy and content in their social class. But if anything wrong accidentally occurs, there is a simple solution to the problem, which is soma. The use of soma totally shapes and controls the utopian society described in Huxley's novel Brave New World as well as symbolize Huxley's society as a whole. This pleasure drug is the answer to all of life's little mishaps and also serves as an escape as well as entertainment. For years, authors and philosophers have satirized the “perfect” society to incite change. In Brave New World, Aldous Huxley describes a so-called utopian society in which everyone is happy. This society is a “controlled environment where technology has essentially [expunged] suffering” (“Brave New World”). A member of this society never needs to be inconvenienced by emotion, “And if anything should go wrong, there's soma” (Huxley 220). Citizens spend their lives sleeping with as many people as they please, taking soma to dull any unpleasant thoughts that arise, and happily working in the jobs they were conditioned to want. John obviously shows a strong interest in Lenina, although she does not retort mutual affection for him; she is unable to express such passions. Lenina does not know how to show affection and how to express feelings; she lives in a society of which represses such emotions. For example, after her first date with Bernard, Lenina simply expects sexual relations with Bernard to occur. Bernard refuses the proposition, and Lenina is utterly shocked to be informed that he’d prefer talking and getting to know her beforehand. Lenina is unable to understand a connection is supposedly felt between two individuals; she has never experienced it. Linda on the other hand, is John’s mother, whom lacks the maternal connection of a typical mother/child relationship; she alienates and abuses him. For example, John alludes to his childhood and retells of a time when he tried comforting his mother. She pushed him off, shouted at him and began hitting him. The inadequate level of affection shared between the two women is explained through the reinforcement of values in the community of “Brave New World”; this leads to the incapability for the two women to express love. Huxley goes on to unveil that society is actually a dystopian world ruled by a controlling government. In particular, a drug known as soma illustrates one of the many negative sides of this new world. Soma is a drug that the government dispenses and people take to escape everyday living.
