The Safety of Emergency Vehicles
The Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative is very informative of the steps and areas the United States Fire Association have taken to in research to increase the safety of firefighters and other emergency service operators. I believe that the United States Fire Association have taken progressive steps to increase emergency vehicle safety. I found chapter four to be very interesting. I like learning about the history and how items work. in Chapter four it explains about different emergency vehicle lights, and some of the studies in which were conducted to find the best devices for the emergency rigs. I did consider the importance of the ramp times of lights in emergency vehicles before reading the Emergency Vehicle

Safety Initiative. In total i found the Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative to be very information and a positive handbook for all working in the emergency services. The predecessor of the Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative was the Safe Operation of Fire Tankers, created by United States Fire Association, first published in 2002.
Fire tankers, were found to be the fire apparatus with the greatest number of fatalities. Following the creation of the Safe Operation of Fire Tankers, the United States Fire Association started working on what would eventually become The Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative. The Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative was created to further reduce the number of deaths and vehicle related injuries of emergency services. In 2002, the United States Fire Association created the two goals the Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative would solve. “1. Identify the major issues related to firefighter and emergency responder fatalities that occur while responding to or returning from incidents and while operating on roadway emergency scenes. 2. Develop and obtain consensus among major national-level fire and emergency service trade associations on draft “best practices” guidelines, mitigation techniques, and technologies to reduce firefighter response and roadway scene fatalities” (FEMA, 2014.) Once setting these goals the United States Fire Association was able to assemble an expert committee on emergency vehicle safety. The committee created a list of recommendations during multiple meetings. In August of 2004, the Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative was
published. The Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative is important because it creates standards of operation, and brings attention to some major safety risks, which can easily be changed. An often ignored safety concern, and law in most of the country is wearing a seatbelt. Michael Karter Jr. stated in the U.S. Firefighter Injuries-2010, that in 2010 there were 14,200 collisions involving fire department emergency vehicles, resulting in 775 firefighter injuries and 11 deaths. While the failure of the vehicle driver and/or occupants to wear seatbelts is rarely established to be the cause of a crash, it is often a mitigating factor in the severity of the outcome of the crash (FEMA, 2014.) By making this information more available and relevant in The Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative, emergency vehicle operators may changes their own behaviours and adopt safer routines. What makes the Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative better than a book of standards and protocols is that it includes scholarly studies explain the reasons for changes leading to new protocol, and show other options that were thought of during the study. Also, the Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative includes case studies, which operators can relate to, and shows the real statistics and stories that have lead to fatalities. What the United States Fire Association have created is a very important document which has the ability to decrease the number of deaths and injuries in the emergency services.
FIRE SAFETY CODES There were several factors that increased the death toll of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, all of which are now addressed in fire safety codes throughout the United States. Primary contributing factors include locked exit doors, a structurally unfit fire escape ladder, and an empty water tank that was supposed to be reserved for fighting fires (McGuire, 2011). When the fire broke out, the workers immediately attempted to exit through the stairwells and the fire escaped.... ... middle of paper ... ...(1992)
This study offers helpful information for anyone who wants to understand more about emergency vehicle lights and their physical and psychological effects on drivers. However, anyone that is charged with installing or buying emergency vehicle lights for first responders and emergency responder vehicles should read and understand this study. By understanding the information in this article, buyers and installers can save money, avoid aggravation, and help protect officers, first responders, and emergency responders who are working and driving vehicles in the field. Who is Lieutenant James D. Wells Jr.? This study was created by Lt. Wells on behalf of the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Worcester cold storage fire that occurred in Worcester Massachusetts on December, 3 1999 provided us with another tragic example to the lurking dangers to the United States fire service. The Worcester fire claimed the lives of 6 firefighters who came to work that morning not realizing that this would be their last shift . The strategic and tactical lessons that were learned from this fire need to be heeded by fire department nationwide. However another important lesson is not as well know. The lesson learned by the Worcester Fire department is that the law is very instrumental to emergency services operations.
In 1973, one of the most influential reports to ever come out of the fire service was created. This report would change the fire service forever and still to this day have a great impact on the way things are done in the fire service. One of the most impacted sectors within the fire service is the way firefighters perceive and implement fire prevention strategies and techniques. This report was called “America Burning” and was published by the National Commission on Fire Prevention and Control. The report was sent directly to the president of the United States of America, who at the current time was Richard
Firefighters are more than friends. You can't fight fires with friends. To fight fires you need a brotherhood. The men and women of the fire service across the globe consider each other family, this is one of the grand traditions of the fire department. Firefighters are constantly looking out for one another, thinking about the things they do and how it may affect the other’s lives and safety. Life safety is of the highest priority in the business of fire rescue. To achieve a safety standard there are many tasks that fire personnel are expected to carry out, for both a personal and a team related purpose. One of these tasks is the daily inspection of the fire apparatus upon arrival to the fire station. This task is with most certainty the most essential process that fire personnel are responsible for in order to get through the shift safely and efficiently.
The key to effective Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) is preparation. A large part of that preparation is the ARFF apparatus, which are the vehicles they use in order to respond swiftly and effectively to crashes of varying magnitudes. Airports are required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to keep ARFF apparatus’ in working order as well as to have a certain amount within specific classes in correlation with the size of the airport and the size of aircraft that the airport operates with. A further analysis will identify the specifics of these perimeters as well as some of the various types of ARFF apparatus’ and the support equipment that compliments them in the effort to save lives and extinguish aircraft fires.
Several measures have been put in place to try and control safety concerns. The leading areas of concern is poor working conditions for drivers, driver exhaustion, hour of service, drivers shortages, fuels prices, driver
Automobiles have been around for well over a century now. I think the most impressive thing about cars in today’s world is the safety features that come with the cars. Think about how much testing goes into making one car. There is seriously so many things that companies have to take into consideration when building a new automobile to assure that it is safe enough for the consumers.
Any problems, questions or equipment issues should be addressed as well as established procedures that may need correction. Emergency responders should also be evaluated to ensure proper practice and procedures were followed and to address any further training that may be needed. Use of ICS should be a focus of the evaluation because of its importance in responding to incidents. Two common mistakes for emergency responders are failure to implement ICS and failure to fully understand the concept and its application (Phoenix Police Department, n.d., slide 17). Proper use of ICS must be used and fully understood in order to reap the benefits of having an efficient, flexible and standardized incident management plan; otherwise tasks and responsibilities are likely to be overlooked during a response to any incident especially those involving the high stress of a terrorist
The Highway Administration Program was concerned with the repair of the worn out roads in the country during the winter period. This owed to the falling of snow on the roads that made activities such as driving and transportation very difficult to the citizens of the country.
On the 7th of March in 2018, I attended the Community experience with the EMS team at Fire station of area one. This station is located at the northeastern corner of nine mile road. Upon arrival I introduce myself to the team. Every member of the team was presented in a professional manner that included: one’s skills, education, and the years of experience. During the meeting, several subjects were discussed such as: nursing student’s objective from this experience, Clarifying tasks and tactics, protocols and daily operations. All the tasks were executed with each member of the team with integrity, honesty and beneficence to the warren community. During the twelve hours shift, there
Analyzation of the Department of Motor Vehicle’s Strategic Plan When I first began writing about the strategic plan of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), I did not reflect on the framework involved in creating the plan, such as Core Value Strategy Model; SWOT Analysis Model; Five Forces Framework; and Creating Public Value Strategy Model. However, going into the assignment, I knew that the department had goals and a plan to achieve the goals (strategy) which resulted in an outcome. This course taught me about elements of the Core Value Driven Strategy Model which pulls from different elements of a strategic plan. Now, I can revisit the strategic plan and analyze the following: Core Value Strategy Model Core Values – The DMV begins their

Developing emergency training programs make sure that in case of an accident, workers know exactly what to do and act according to the emergency plan to avoid panic and confusion. Consistency in these training is important because it will keep the workers’ skill harp in how to deal with situations.
