Emergency room physicians are on the front lines in a crisis, caring for everyone from trauma victims to sick kids. An ability to think quickly and care for a wide variety of patients makes them valuable assets at every hospital. It also brings some perks. When sudden illness or acute injury strikes, patients turn to hospital emergency rooms for immediate medical assistance. An ER doctor, or emergency medicine specialist, is a physician who diagnoses and treats illnesses and injuries in a hospital emergency room or other urgent care setting. Emergency medicine is a financially rewarding career, and it also comes with the reward of saving lives. ER doctors require intensive training to know how to shoulder their intensive responsibilities. Emergency room physicians begin getting an M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited traditional or osteopathic medical school(How to Become an ER Doctor). After that, they complete a 36-month residency program in emergency medicine to become eligible for certification by the American Board of Emergency Medicine(How to Become an ER Doctor). The ABEM grants certification to candidates who pass its oral and written exams within five years of completing their residency training(How to Become an ER Doctor). This certification lasts 10 years, and physicians must complete continuing education requirements to renew it(How to Become an ER Doctor). Standing at the starting line of the full marathon I felt anxious and nervous. Not only was I excited to accomplish this goal, but also I was nervous about the difficulty of this task. However, when I crossed the finish line and accomplished this goal, I realized that a new and possibly more difficult goal was about to start. This goal was not only to complete Physician Assistant School but it was to strive to excel in a career as a Physician Assistant in a rural primary care setting. Driven by my intrinsic personal traits of leadership, compassion, and commitment, I am motivated to achieve this goal of excelling in my career as a Physician Assistant.
Another thing that is in the job description is EMT training is available in most states and is offered by the fire, police, and health departments. As an EMT you have to be able to stay calm under intense pressure, but you have to be quick in getting to the victim and giving the right care, and also you have to have the right personality to be an EMT if you are stuck up and have a rude attitude then an EMT in not the job for you.
First I would like to state that any career in a medical field takes a lot of dedication and many hours studying and it is not for everyone. I would also like to say once an individual has made a career out of it the job has long hours and can be very stressful, so I suggest readers to not consider a career in medicine unless you are genuinely interested in the work, and are not in it just for the money.
Under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act of 1998 (EMTALA), health providers by law are supposed to follow the federal guidelines and the EMTALA when you work in an emergency medical care at certain hospitals (facilities that participate in Medicare-includes 98% of hospitals in the United States (U.S.)). This also means that any part of the hospital that can perform an evaluation and treatment of EMC is considered an ED., for example, a women's hospital that delivers babies is subject to EMTALA. As a health care professional under this law, you have to make sure that every person entering a hospital in need or requesting receives a medical screening examination (MSE), and an emergency medical condition (EMC) evaluation to determine
With the emergence of urgent care clinics, consumers now have another option when it comes time to receiving medical treatment. Often an illness arises during times when a person’s doctor is not available, such as at night or on weekends. This is when urgent care clinics can help.
Due to the populations current issues with insufficient healthcare coverage, or complete lack of, many patients resort to the ED as primary access and diagnosis thus delaying treatment even further. As a result, emergency departments are providing treatment for medical, surgical, critical, and psychological emergencies. These extended wait times lead to a deterioration of patient health, discounting of the patients chief complaints with the intention of acting more efficiently, and inadvertently, occasionally, causing the spread of communicable diseases. Emergency rooms by definition are 24-hour care access to healthcare, however they are losing the fairness and impartiality to provide equal service to all patients stemming from outrageous wait
The medical field has a very diverse group of careers that all go toward helping people live healthier, better, and longer lives. Women, specifically, need the service of one important person in the medical field, and that person would be a doctor known as an obstetrician/gynecologist or OBGYN.
Now some serious hazards of being an ER Doctor is your constantly exposed to sickness. You see everyday people dying and injured. You are exposed to very rude and mean people who could be trying to hurt you.You constantly work under very high emotions from yourself and others who are hurt or the family
An ob-gyn is what you probably refer to as just delivering babies but it’s a lot more then that. An obstetrician has to do with giving patients medicine, making sure a patient and the baby are healthy for a long nine months, being the one their for the delivery process, etc. To be an obstetrician/ gynecology, you have to go to school for quite some years but not just that also training classes. When in college learning to be an ob-gyn, you get to experience a lot of hands on things which is always fun! Last but not least before I begin to explain lots of things about an ob-gyn is that being an obstetrician takes a lot of work and effort but it entertains me more than any other career.
Mondays in the emergency room (ER) are typically busy. Most of the patients contributing to this volume have dealt with a medical issue all weekend, cannot get into their primary care provider or both. Of course, there are the typical emergent patients that have no other choice but to be seen immediately, and they make up the rest of the volume. The aforementioned reasons often cause increased stress and frustration among these patients. So, as an emergency room nurse, it is understood that our encounters with patients might not be the best, as these people are probably not having their best day. When family members accompany these patients, this has the potential to add even more stress to the environment.
They receive an extremely high salary and get respected. With lots of wealth, they can afford a nice house, car, and clothing. They can also use that money to help the less fortunate individuals. Anesthesiologists also have the choice to do a surgery or not. Moreover, it’s a stable job since only a handful of people have this job. However, being an anesthesiologist has its disadvantages as well. First of all, it requires a lot of school and that can lead to stress. There is a lot of standing in the operating room. They may be standing for hours depending on the surgery. Additionally, anesthesiologists may work long, irregular, and overnight hours. That means there is less time to spend with family. Lastly, they are exposed to more illnesses and
The first for years are spent earning a bachelor’s degree in any science-related field. In order to get into the 4 year medical school program an individual must take the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test). After those 4 years in medical school, there is a 2-3 year residency period. Where doctors work first hand in facilities dealing with patients. After this residency the student may take The American Board of Pediatrics exam in order to become a board certified pediatrician. Then after those 3 years, another 2-3 years is required in specializing in pediatric cardiology. After the fellowship another exam is needed to practice as a board certified pediatric cardiologist. In addition to this level of education, there is a possibility to super specialize as mentioned before and that requires another 2-3 years. When thinking about the amount of education it takes to reach to that position is quite mind boggling. The ESTJ personality type usually have innate need to finish a task completely, so once we have our mindset on something it happens. This type of intrinsic motivation is needed throughout a long educational
Even though EM is a highly attractive specialty, according to my experiences, the service pressures and budgetary constraints are real and I feel that junior doctors in EM don’t get structured and supervised teaching on the shop floor. We have teaching programme for junior doctors where once a week they get lectures on various topics covering their curriculum. This type of traditional teaching in the form of lectures or skill stations in the emergency department is particularly unsatisfying and unproductive for adult learners. (Kilroy, 2004)
Overcrowding is another major factor in wait times in the emergency department . There is a strong link between overcrowding and length of stay of admitted patients in the hospital. When EMS is bringing in patients, and the waiting room is filling up, so are the emergency department beds. As fast as patients would like to be seen, it is not realistic. There has to be room in the hospital itself. Which means admitted patients that are on the floors have to be discharged or transferred before that bed becomes available so that the patients in the Emergency Department can be moved to the floor. The Emergency Department was created to stabilize patients so that they can be moved to the floor for the rest of their care until these
One advantage includes being able to help other women with their personal problems and help them bring new life into the world. Another advantage would be the fact that there will always be a high outlook on medical careers because there will always be injured/ill people in need of medical attention. However, becoming a doctor, like anything else in life, does have its disadvantages. One disadvantage of becoming a doctor is the long work hours that are quite mentally and sometimes physically intensive. Anther negative of the field is the high cost of malpractice insurance needed to cover the cost if someone was to be accused of making a mistake while on the
