Being a poet is not an easy skill set and involves a great deal of creativity for a writer to generate a meaningful poem. T.S. Eliot wrote numerous poems and also “achieved eminence as an essayist writing on literary theory and criticism, social, philosophical, and theological issues” (Eliot iii). In one of his poems, The Hippopotamus, T.S. Eliot critiques the Christian doctrine and its believers. Eliot mocks religion in this poem through the use of literary devices such as figurative language, imagery, and sound.
Figurative language is used constantly throughout this poem and gives it a profound meaning. The hippopotamus is used as a metaphor to represent the Church and human beings. Stanza three attacks the Church and its believers for being weak:
The hippo 's feeble steps may err
In compassing material ends,
While the True Church need never stir
To gather in its dividends. (9-12)
The believers are being classified as “feeble” (9) because they lack courage and strength for questioning the Church. Eliot’s The Hippopotamus is a satirical view on Christianity. Eliot utilizes figurative language, imagery and sound to enhance the poem. The message of the poem is that one doesn’t need an organized religion to attain a connection with God or heaven. Eliot has a bitter approach towards the Church and its leaders. Thus, he compares a hippopotamus with the Church to show that an animal can reach heaven whereas members of the Church fail to do so. By using this metaphor of the hippo, Eliot is able to voice and disguise his opinion. The animal-like person is able to attain salvation without organized religion or the Church. To conclude, this poem allows one to unfold and witness the deceitful system of the Church that exists, only to be driven by “dividends”
Why I Left the Church” by Richard Garcia is a poem that explores the ongoing and conflicting relationship between a child’s fantasy and the Church. Although the majority of the text is told in present tense, readers are put through the lenses of a young boy who contemplates the legitimacy of the restricting and constricting nature of worship. It is a narrative that mixes a realist approach of storytelling with a fantasy twist that goes from literal metaphors to figurative metaphors in the description of why the narrator left the church. The poet presents the issue of childhood innocence and preset mindsets created by the Church using strong metaphors and imagery that appeal to all the senses.
Building off of the ideas expressed in the first stanza, Matthews’ use of this extended metaphor allows him to depict a bleak and doleful society to the reader. By incorporating such pessimism and desperation into his tone, he can create for the reader a direct scene into how he perceives society. Using this portrayal, the reader can then acknowledge the message that Matthews attempts to convey and begin to understand his purpose for this piece and its moral. Matthew’s use of imagery enables him to build upon his ideas and to leave an indelible mark on the reader, but without this rhetorical strategy, one would become oblivious to the several connections he makes to his overall message. Moreover, Matthews includes imagery not only to connect with the reader but to make correlations to society as a whole. One can identify such an example in the seventh stanza when Matthews states, “All the little ants are marching / They all do it the same way” (Matthews). Upon analysis of this quote, the reader can identify how Matthews depicts society while using the rhetorical strategy of imagery. In this scene, he interprets people as ants, marching all in line, not one different from the group which the reader can then denote them as being similar,

"The thing could barely stand." ("The Bull Calf" line 1). The calf is referred to as a thing not an animal or creature. This is the way the author blocks emotion. The first line in the first stanza is a contradiction from the rest of the stanza because the rest of it has a positive attitude and the first sentence shows that the animal is weak. The third and the fourth line show the glory of the animal by hinting to royalty. The last line in the first stanza helps to back this information up by pointing to Richard the second. In the fifth line the narrator uses thee word us this connects him to the event. "The fierce sunlight tugging the maize from the ground" ("The Bull Calf" line 6). This is imagery, the sunlight showing promise and hope, maize is yellow this refers us back to the sun through the similar color. The last line refers to Richard the second this makes the poem flow better into the next stanza, Richard the second was lowered from his rank much like the calf is going to be.
Each literary work portrays something different, leaving a unique impression on all who read that piece of writing. Some poems or stories make one feel happy, while others are more solemn. This has very much to do with what the author is talking about in his or her writing, leaving a bit of their heart and soul in the work. F. Scott Fitzgerald, when writing The Great Gatsby, wrote about the real world, yet he didn’t paint a rosy picture for the reader. The same can be said about T.S. Eliot, whose poem “The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock,” presents his interpretation of hell. Both pieces of writing have many similarities, but the most similar of them all is the tone of each one.
The structural and technical features of the story point towards a religious epiphany. The title of the story, as well as its eventual subject, that of cathedrals, points inevitably towards divinity. Upon first approaching the story, without reading the first word of the first paragraph, one is already forced into thinking about a religious image. In addition, four of the story’s eleven pages (that amounts to one third of the tale) surround the subject of cathedrals.
Many people in the world who are unhappy with their lives can connect with the emptiness the hollow men feel in Eliot’s poem. “We are the stuffed men leaning together headpiece filled with straw” indicates an unoriginal quality that all the men share. Their goals in life are alike because they are not fulfilling. In “The Hollow Men,” the image of scarecrows represent people’s empty lives and their vacant pursuits. The hollow men’s lives have no point or meaning.

One of the most prevalent of the literary tools used in this poem is the simile. Repeatedly throughout the poem Bishop uses the simile to give the reader a clearer picture of the situation at hand. The simile is an ideal literary tool to use when the author is trying to convey a sensory description of an object or idea. When describing the fish?s physical appearance in lines 9-15 she compares the fish?s skin to ?ancient wallpaper?; this immediately gives the reader an impression of the age and outward appearance of the fish. Later in the poem when in lines 61-62 she describes the pieces of broken fishing line hanging from the fish?s mouth as ?medals with their ribbons / frayed and wavering? she is using a simile to give the impression of pride and honor. George Herbert’s struggle to be humble enough to fully accept God’s undying love can be located within each of his poems. The way in which Herbert conveys this conflict is by utilizing structure as well as metaphysical techniques. This combination of literary devices creates a physical reality that allows Herbert, or the poetic speaker, to “make his feelings immediately present” (245). These devices, at first, appear to be artificial and contradictory to the poet’s goal of making God’s word visible. This process of rejecting and accepting, or of “conflict and resolution” (243), is done throughout “The Temple,” which leads Herbert to an ultimate acceptance of God and to an “achieved character of humility, tenderness, moral sensitiveness” (249).
