Is my career ending, continuing or beginning? The verdict is near, and unfortunately the decision will not be up to me. This is my last chance for promotion in the Navy, more specifically; if I do not advance I will have nine months left to serve? I have been an electrician in the Navy, what field or occupation should I look at next? Nikola Tesla once said “We crave for new sensations but soon become indifferent to them” (648). But do we really become indifferent? Should I stay in the electrical field or start down a new career path, and see where it takes me. What is required to become an electrician outside the military? While commercial and residential usage has increased only 2% over the last ten years, it is estimated to increase 1% a year, for the next 20 years. With the construction of new power plants over the next decade, in addition to the increased use of alternative power generation (e.g. solar, wind) will effected future employment for electricians (Shively, Ferrare 22-31). In addition to the new job openings due to growth, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) is estimating that there will be a loss of union electricians from 25 - 30% over the next five years (Films on Demand). By 2022 it is estimated, that the projected job growth for electricians will be 22%, this equates to 224,600 new jobs …show more content…

While on the job training is the beginning of an electricians training, not only will higher education will ensure there advancement opportunities, but will also open specialized jobs in new technologies. The field is evolving technically; even more, in the green or alternative power fields. Maybe it is a good time to leave the Navy, and continue the adventure somewhere else.
