For Report 9, I chose Ezequiel Peña’s interpretation of the song,”El Alazán y el Rosillo” because I enjoyed his singing style better compared to the other tracks. I enjoyed hearing the way he changed his vocals. As he was singing you could hear the different vowel formation, he would use a combination of back and front vowels. I also had the opportunity to visit a live concert of his on my birthday last year and he knows the way to begin a show. He has people dance on stage, while he is performing. I honestly enjoyed his singing style because he would change the instruments used from banda to mariachi. The novel El Sonador is about a boy that finds beauty and wonder everywhere he goes. Neftali is the type of boy who is really shy and likes to spend most of his time alone reading, writing, and daydreaming. When he grows up, Neftali wants to help others that do not have the power of expressing themselves. His father mocks his dreams because he has already planned his son's future.
The video “La Raza de Colorado: El Movimiento” and the exhibit “El Movimiento” at UNC’s Michener Library chronicle the struggles and triumphs of Mexican Americans in Weld County and throughout the state of Colorado. Visitors of the exhibit can see different graphics and pictures posted on the walls depicting many of the important events such as the protests against Kitayama farms in the 1960’s which aimed at improving working conditions and pay, especially for women. Not only were farm workers being exploited, but factory workers lacked appropriate conditions as well, to help with this, several groups such as United Farm Workers, Brown Berets and Black Panthers organized a united front in order to launch strikes and boycotts against offending farms, factories and businesses which oppressed and exploited minority workers. Incarnation usually transforms an inmate, but sometimes it's not always for their best interest. Jimmy Santiago Baca, the author of A Place to Stand, did however learn how to transform to better himself and his future for after prison life. While in prison Baca teaches himself how to read and write despite being illiterate from a very young age. By teaching himself how to read and write, Baca transforms his life through his love of poetry. This also helped him survive in jail for the 5 years he was there. His poems “I Am Offering This Poem”, “Who Understands Me but Me”, and “Immigration in Our Own Land” convey multiple messages of character transformation and survival that Jimmy depicts within his prison memoir A Place to Stand.
In El Plan de Santa Barbara, we are provided with a brief description of what “racial structure” has created for the Chicano community.Those who are privileged, “Anglo-American community,” have determined our future, a future where we are meant to stay in the lower class of society. In the Manifesto of EPDSB, it states “due to the racist structure of this society… self-determination of our community is now the only acceptable mandate for social and political action”(EPDSB 9). This “racist structure” stated in El Plan de Santa Barbara is traced all the way back to our ancestors during the Spanish invasion and through the Chicano movement we have been able to fight back against this “racist structure.”
A student should never be denied the right to learn and become successful because of a different skin color, or because they speak a different language. “No saco nada de la escuela” by Luis Valdez is a play that discusses the racism in schools. The play starts with students going to elementary school and then ascending to middle school and college. At the beginning the students were not aware of what racism really was because of their innocence. However, the teacher that they had was very racist and bullied the students of color. That experience made the other kids realize that not everyone was the same and because of color or language they should be treated differently. There are five different students who take part of this play, two of those students were white, and there were two Chicanos and one black. That is great diversity of cultures. The teacher that the students have in elementary school was an example of the other professors they were going to have throughout their school years. Very arrogant and not understanding of the minority students. Their teachers were not really interested in teaching the minorities and always showed her discontent of having students of color. Their teachers didn’t believe that students who were part of a minority should be placed in the same classroom as the white students. Maybe that was because they didn’t know the potential a minority student could have. One Chicano student named Francisco never denied his roots and became very successful. He had many obstacles in his learning environment, but at the end he becomes a great example of perseverance. Francisco is the student who I think showed the greatest development in the play. Los de Abajo, the realistic portrayal of those involved in the Mexican Revolution? After only reaching a small audience with serialised publications of Los de Abajo, the importance of the novel and author, Mariano Azuela, only became apparent in the 1920’s. The rugged nature of the narrative in the novel proved to be something different to the norm of the romanticised literature that had been published regarding the revolution. A testimonial view provided by an eyewitness account offered ‘mexicanidad’ and a realistic snapshot of life in that era. Melville has an interesting way of conveying his ideas about slavery into Benito Cereno. One way in which he does so is through Captain Delano. Throughout a good portion of the story Delano is incapable of discovering the truth. Most specifically, about the situation that lay in front of him on the St. Dominic. Delano cannot even conceive of the idea that the slaves on board the ship were in the driver’s seat, as far as power is concerned. For instance, after Cereno gives the background story concerning the ship, Delano claims, “the Spaniard 's manner while telling the story. The eternal endeavor of obtaining a realistic sense of selfhood is depicted for all struggling women of color in Gloria Anzaldua’s “Borderlands/La Frontera” (1987). Anzaldua illustrates the oppressing realities of her world – one that sets limitations for the minority. Albeit the obvious restraints against the white majority (the physical borderland between the U.S. and Mexico), there is a constant and overwhelming emotional battle against the psychological “borderlands” instilled in Anzaldua as she desperately seeks recognition as an openly queer Mestiza woman. With being a Mestiza comes a lot of cultural stereotypes that more than often try to define ones’ role in the world – especially if you are those whom have privilege above the “others”.

Brian Doyle is the editor of the University of Portland’s magazine and the author of many books. “Joyas Voladoras” is a short story in the book, The Wet Engine: Exploring the Mad Wild Miracle of the Heart and in the book it goes through his experience as a father as well as his experience of his son born with a missing chamber in his heart. In “Joyas Voladoras” Brian Doyle portrays that no matter who people are, everyone has their similarities.
“Los Vendidos,” translated to “The Sellouts” by Luis Valdez is a one act play that draws attention to the prejudice against Mexicans. Salesman, Honest Sancho, is a used Mexican lot owner that sells “robots,” each representing a Mexican model stereotype. The secretary, Miss Jimenez, works for the governor of the town who has sent her to purchase a Mexican to help their votes. Sancho shows the secretary the many different Mexicans they have from a farm worker to Pachuco (a lazy Mexican that causes trouble), to a revolucionario and a Mexican-American. Each Mexican model has a quality that the secretary doesn’t like, represented through a stereotype, which shows the prejudices society holds on the race. Although throughout the play the Mexicans
“Reuben, Reuben” was a much happier song and the first of the songs performed in English; however, my favorite pieces were “Water Come-A-Me Eye” and “Great Day!” I especially enjoyed “Water Come-A-Me Eye” because of the percussion instruments that some of the choir members played. Jasmina Begovic kept a steady beat on the maracas and provided a pleasant accompaniment to the melodies of the choir. The other percussion instruments were equally enjoyable and added an element to the song that other songs did not have. “Great Day!” was particularly enjoyable because of the fast-paced rhythm and the energy of the performers. This song had a faster tempo than the other songs and was a great way to conclude the concert. Though it seemed as if the entire concert had picked up speed when the choir sang “Reuben, Reuben,” “Guantanamera,” and “Water Come-A-Me Eye” consecutively, the rhythm eventually slowed down when they performed “Fare You Well,” a traditional American folksong with a rather melancholy sound to it.
Music in film is normally either used to color the emotion of a scene and fitting the setting (Dyer 250), or to inform the audience about a character. In La Strada Fellini and Rota use the different musical themes to tell the audience about the characters, and their development (Van Order 53). Through the diegetic and nondiegetic playing Il Matto, they show characters transition from ignorance about their self importance, to a state of cognizance, and then to their eventually understanding their levels of importance in the world.

When looking for a story full of irony, suspense, mystery readers can always turn to basically any story written by the “father of the detective stories”, Edgar Allan Poe (Work Cited – Biography website). In what is considered his most perfect short story of all, “The Cask of Amontillado” Poe integrates irony even in the tiniest aspects if the entire story (Work Cite – Cliff Notes). For the reader to completely understand Poe’s creepy, perfectionist style they should know some background on Poe himself.
