Eh Braddah Pidgin Ho braddah howzit? Or hello how are you doing? This is basically Hawaiian Creole English also known as pidgin to the locals of Hawai'i. Pidgin is broken down English to help people who don’t understand English very well. Pidgin a very unique language that most people call Hawaii slang, but most people of see pidgin as a language or the identity of Hawaii. Even people who lived in Hawaii for a couple of years have had problems understanding pidgin from other locals. So my idea is to have schools mostly High School and/or college to teach pidgin, the language and history. But in all the different islands of Hawaii have their own version of pidgin, so in schools it will teach the basics that all people should know about pidgin. …show more content…
From an Educational Perspective a man named Jeff Siegel is an educator at University of Hawaii at Manoa who is for pidgin in class rooms. “Like plate lunches, aloha shirts, and lei, Pidgin is an important part of local identity in Hawaii” (Siegel 1). He understands that pidgin is part of a local in Hawaii for a reason even though “in many schools, pidgin is frowned upon and the language is kept out of classrooms” (Siegel 1). Also states some schools correct the way the student talks in pidgin. But people don’t understand that pidgin is a major role in creating our society now and advanced in the years. The reason why Pidgin should be apart of Hawaii’s Curriculum is because, Pidgin is a part of Hawaii’s Identity of being a local of Hawaii. A lot of people take pride in living in Hawaii for a long time and even talk pidgin out of Hawaii even though people around him think he is crazy, stupid or something around them. Even I take pride in living in Hawaii, I speak pidgin almost all the time unless around family that does not understand pidgin or I even teach them to understand me and any of my friends because even they have their own “slang” they use. Lisa Delpit’s book, “The Skin We Speak”, talked about language and culture, and how it relates to the classroom. How we speak gives people hits as to where we are from and what culture we are a part of. Unfortunately there are also negative stereotypes that come with certain language variations. There is an “unfounded belief that the language of low income groups in rural or urban industrial areas is somehow structurally “impoverished” or “simpler” than Standard English” (Delpit 71). The United States is made of people from various cultures and speak many different variations of languages. As teachers we must be aware of some of the prejudices we may have about language and culture.
Language can bring people together but can also isolate. The United States is known as a melting pot, not only does that refer to culture but also the many different languages. We know of language barriers, but very seldom do we think of the language barriers within our borders. Even with the language barriers it solidifies the need for a national language, the United States of America should allow the freedom to express one’s culture while maintaining English as our national language, therefore offering common ground to its citizens.
Pidgin serves as a means of identifying local culture that translates variously into a source of pride and shame. It is more than a language; it is an expression of cultural identity that can be used to establish a sense of belonging to Hawaii. As a result, Hawaii Pidgin is greatly used and can be identified as a local marker to relate Hawaii locals back to their natural Hawaiian background and without its use many people may feel disconnected to Hawaii. In the 1960s-1970s the Hawaiian Renaissance and growth of the Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement began. During this time there were small, yet important events that sparked a completely new understanding for the Kanaka Maoli. In the past, being a Hawaiian was not something to be proud of; many did not even have much knowledge on what being a Hawaiian really was. As Hawai‘i became more colonialized and heavily influenced by various cultures, the quality of being a Hawaiian slowly but terrifyingly disintegrated. It seems that right after statehood there was a sense that a new era would come. This era known as the Hawaiian Renaissance encouraged many individuals to become more motivated and educated on the history of Hawai‘i. Especially for Kanaka Maoli, the Hawaiian Renaissance ignited a fire of revival and perpetuation for a culture that was nearly extinct. In many ways the Hawaiian Renaissance has been the defining moment because during this time sovereignty, protest, and revival were the key players in further strengthening Hawai‘i and hopefully moving it towards independence.

From the time the Pilgrims landed in this great nation at Plymouth Rock, immigrants have been culturally diverse and have spoken many languages. When the Pilgrims arrived in the New World, they did not know how to communicate with the natives. Through intense study the natives learned the Pilgrims’ language. Even with the common language they were still a melting pot of different culture. Some would say that America has gotten over the language/ cultural barriers and now almost everyone speaks the common language of English, but there are still many immigrants who do not know English. Bilingual education is put into public schools for this reason, so that immigrant children can be assimilated to English gradually. The national language should be English instead of the official language because America has prided herself in being very diverse. If we take away the diversity, then we take away the core values that America has always had since her founding.
The Academic English Mastery Program (AEMP) is a groundbreaking approach to ensuring the language and literacy acquisition of speakers of non-standard varieties in parts of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Headed by former speech pathologist Dr. Noma LeMoine, AEMP is a response to an article entitled, “The Children Can No Longer Wait: An Action Plan to End Low Achievement and Establish Educational Excellence,” which outlines the difficulties of nonstandard English speakers and the failure of the school district to successfully address these deficiencies (LeMoine, 1999, p. 4). The program began in 1990 with nineteen elementary schools and was originally called the Language Development Program for African American Students, thus designed for African American Language speakers. It has now changed its name to appropriately describe its expansion to over three hundred elementary and junior high schools and to include other groups of nonstandard English speakers who are identified as Limited Standard English Proficient students (LeMoine, 2002, lecture). These constituents, what Ogbu (1997, pg. 234, 235) call “castelike minorities,” include African-Americans, Mexican Americans, Hawaiian Americans, and Native Americans, whose native language is not Mainstream American English (MAE). I chose to write my essay on these two cultures, because they are both native to their land, and they were both overthrown, for lack of a better word, from their homeland by more “Civilized” people. They were both thriving, self sufficient cultures that were living and progressing fine on their own. But others saw them as primitive and wanted to change them. Language plays an important in our lives, for children this is a critical time for them to learn how they can use language to communicate effectively from the when they learn through school and into adulthood. While a child goes through school they are exposed to Standard English, but there are diversities that appear in the classroom for example culture plays a part in language development. Creoles are a form or variant of a language that should be accepted by national governments and societies. Creoles and pidgins are variants of a language, often having English, French or other European languages as the “mother-language” that dominate the spoken language of a society. While creoles are established languages, such as Gullah and Papiamentu, pidgins are unofficial versions that are devised to speak with an unfamiliar language. When a pidgin language is taught to a younger generation or other people, it becomes a creole. Some argue that English should be the official language because it is the most dominant language in the world. Some believe by doing so, it would create a stronger unity among the American people. Proponents believe that although the United States is diverse, it may be too much for the American people to juggle multiple languages. Others believe that English shouldn’t be the official language and instead be one of many prominent languages that are widely used in our nation such as Spanish, French, and Chinese. I believe English should be the official language in the United States. However, I believe more emphasis should be placed on learning new languages especially among youths in school and during developmental stages.
