Egoism is the idea that a person believes they should do whatever is necessary to attain their own advancements and pleasures, disregarding their dishonorable acts. Plenty who have egoistic traits believe it is the justifications of such behaviors that drives one to exhibit unethical decisions. In fact, no matter how clear a goal may appear one always experiences unexpected circumstances when trying to reach any goal. Consequently, individuals tend to turn to their religions, when put under unexpected predicaments. For this reason, they end up turning to religion to fix their circumstances, or to forgive them from all wrongdoings to help ease their consciousness. Evidently, when Crusoe went through his first voyage, he said “I began to pitch on what I had done”, showing that he did not consider the counsel of his parents nor how his selfish acts will affect their feelings (Defoe 5). His egotism made it difficult to consider his acts of selfishness. In effect, Crusoe relates his “original sin” to the date of September 1st, 1651 when he left his home, and ignored God through disobedience of his father’s advice (Defoe 7). Crusoe “went the old way of all sailors...and was made drunk with it,and it that one night’s wickedness I drowned all my repentance,” emphasizing that he did not remain with feelings of regrets for long and forgot all his promises made to God. Moreover, he saids “ I was overtaken by judgement of Heaven for my wicked leaving my father’s house, and abandoning my duty,” concluding that when he was shipwrecked it was God’s punishment for sinning against his father (Defoe 5). The theme of "man’s relationship to God and the universe" presented in Epistle 1 of Alexander Pope’s "An Essay on Man" complements Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. Crusoe is an inconsistent character who turns to God whenever he is in need, yet fails to maintain respect for nature and for his fellow man. In the first year of Robinson Crusoe’s solitary life on the island, he falls ill and has a terrifying dream that alters his awareness of his place in the universe and God’s control of it. This experience leads him to contemplate his past ingratitude and to embark on a life of piety, reading the Bible daily, though without a drastic or permanent change in his character. Throughout his adventures in the novel, Crusoe has moments of awareness and appreciation of God, yet each moment of faith fades as he regains control over his situation. The ideals presented in the last three sections of Epistle 1 — that life exists in a "chain of being" and is interdependent, that the spirit of God exists in all things, and that man should accept existence as good — speak directly to the understanding that Crusoe comes to as a result of his illness and the life he leads throughout the novel.
This paper is an attempt to examine the seeming opposition of religion vs. self-interest with respect to the character of Robinson Crusoe. I will venture to demonstrate that in the novel, Defoe illustrates the contradictions with which Crusoe must contend as he strives to please God while ensuring his own survival in the world. In part, I will endeavor to show that a distorted sense of Puritanism as well as the existing colonial mindset exacerbated this opposition, and resulted in what I propose to be Defoe's (possibly retroactive) imposition of a religious justification for Crusoe's actions.

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe is considered to be the first novel of incident. Before I read the novel I knew something about poor Robinson Crusoe--shipwrecked on a desert island, lived on the island for a lot of years, and acquired a friend by the name of Friday. As I began to read, I had the preconceived notion that Robinson Crusoe was just an adventure book. However, I read no more than a few pages before my mind was greatly enlightened. Robinson Crusoe does not suffer just one shipwreck, but two of them. He is captured by Moorish pirates, escapes, and goes to Brazil to become a planter. After his second shipwreck, Crusoe gives details about his techniques for survival. Also, the ending of the novel is quite surprising with a setting that is quite a contrast to the desert island. Arguably, one of the funniest scenes in all of literature is recorded in the final chapters.

Daniel Defoe has frequently been considered the father of realism in regards to his novel, Robinson Crusoe. In the preface of the novel, the events are described as being “just history of fact” (Defoe and Richetti ). This sets the tone for the story to be presented as factual, while it is in of itself truly fiction. This is the first time that a narrative fictional novel has been written in a way that the story is represented as the truth. Realistic elements and precise details are presented unprecedented; the events that unfold in the novel resonate with readers of the middle-class in such a way that it seems as if the stories could be written about themselves. Defoe did not write his novel for the learned, he wrote it for the large public of tradesmen, apprentices and shopkeepers (Häusermann 439-456).
