What are the structural social, economic and cultural barriers that impact the families? The economic barriers that face the Working Poor are almost impossible to navigate without spending a considerable amount of time navigating the system in order to barely get by. The problem is people with good intentions, work ethic, and planning cannot even make ends meet in order to live comfortably because of structural barriers in all arenas. Our capitalistic society encourages greed and promises false hope of the American Dream. This is an extremely troubling thing to hear as a mother, because Caroline was working so hard to do what should for her daughter and if only she the means and access to the correct services, thing may have been different. It is clear that the structure of these individual systems (social services, education, health insurance, workers’ rights) are not equal and do not work together to provide a holistic approach when working with a client. The cause and effect of the many external issues make it difficult to level the playing field for Caroline and her daughter. These social-structural barriers reinforce privilege. The abuse is not just check cashing companies or major corporations, such as Walmart (Shipler, 2004, p. 18). It is also the structures that are meant to help and service those in need: schools, social programs, job training programs, public housing, and rehabilitation services. The United States as a whole is still fixated on the idea of the “American Dream”—the land of opportunity where anyone can work hard enough to pull themselves up from their boot straps into a comfortable life success and stability.
