Have you ever been called a ling ling, the N-word, or were told to go back to your country? We live in a country that is being controlled by white supremacists and racists who look down on us, even though our world is culturally diverse with unique histories. Racism can happen when Hollywood casts white people in non-white character roles, when the police murder innocent lives, or even expecting all Asians to be good at math. Racism is a big problem in today’s society, and not many people understand how severe the effects are. Discrimination can cause inner conflict/stress, wrongful imprisonment, and even deaths. Although it is possible to reduce racism, it may more difficult to prevent it altogether. Despite this, we should still make great efforts to minimize racism and speak up against it.

In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, the character Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white man’s daughter. The people of Maycomb County were racist and believed that he was guilty because of his race. Although the trial proved Tom innocent, the jury still decided that he was guilty. The decision was made purely out of racism. This is shown when the author writes, “In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s word, the white always wins. They’re ugly, but these are the facts of life” (Lee 295). Another example is Anne Frank from Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, who faces discrimination when she and her family become forced into hiding from the Nazis for being Jewish. Sadly, they were caught in 1944 and were sent to concentration camps, where she died at the age of 15. For over 2,000 years, Jews have been discriminated and excluded from society.
