This letter is being written to you regarding the consequences of biodiversity being threatened. Specifically, this letter will be focusing on ocean pollution and its high impact on salmon that many Americans consume. It is helpful to start off with the definition of biodiversity. So what exactly is biodiversity? Biological diversity provides medicines, fiber, food, clean water and so many other resources and services that are vital to our survival every day. Scientists have found that, as a result of human activity, the variation of life is decreasing at an alarming rate. Another large issue connecting to the decline of biodiversity is overexploitation. “Overexploitation is the over use of wildlife and plant species by people for food, clothing, …show more content…

Due to the decline of fish in the rivers, humans have begun farming salmon and have kept the fish away from their real habitats. Scientists, Martin Krkosek, Jennifer Ford, Alexandra S. Morton, Subhash Lele, Ransom A. Myers, and Mark A. Lewis, from Washington have done a study on how salmon farming has caused parasites to grow among the salmons and this has led to a decrease of wild salmon in the rivers because humans are overfishing. “The louse-induced mortality of pink salmon is commonly over 80% and exceeds previous fishing mortality. If outbreaks continue, then local extinction is certain, and a 99% collapse in pink salmon population abundance is expected in four salmon generations” (Krkosek, Martin; Ford, Jennifer S; Morton, Alexandra; Lele, Subhash; Myers, Ransom A; Lewis, Mark A, Abstract of Declining Wild Salmon Populations in Relation to Parasites from Farm Salmon, 2007). This study was done in 2007 and now it is 2016 so at this point, wild salmon is officially extinct and we eat the “fake” farmed salmon that comes with high health risks. Salmon extinction can also lead to something called genetic erosion which is detrimental to the ecosystem. Genetic erosion is when the variability of the salmon gene pool …show more content…

The Government should send police boats to guard the docks and check what types of boats and ships leave and for what purposes. Cameras could be installed at docks to see who is responsible for pollution. The Government could also send officials to remove the large amounts of salmon farms and check on the cleanliness of the few farms that are still permitted and the living conditions of the salmons. Lastly, customers should be given better education on what salmon they buy and what kind of chemicals are inside it. On the salmon packages in the stores, it should be written about how pregnant women can have major consequences from eating it and that they should avoid it. Thank you for reading this letter and please take into consideration these issues and keep in mind that if the government does establish better rules for these subjects, there will be less underdeveloped children born, happier and healthier families in America, and a better ecosystem overall. Let’s not destroy this beautiful planet that we call home. And let’s not be responsible for its
